Unit 7 · Human population and the environment
This unit covers human population and the environment: population growth, variation among nations; population explosion and family-welfare programme; environment and human health; human rights; value education; HIV/AIDS; women and child welfare; role of information technology in environment and human health. It also includes field work: visit to a local area to document environmental assets (river / forest / grassland / hill / mountain); visit to a local polluted site (urban / rural / industrial / agricultural); study of common plants, insects, birds; study of a simple ecosystem (pond, river, hill slope). There is no separate practical exam; these visits are knowledge of what to see, because the scheme allows questions on local ecology.
1 Population growth and variation among nations
Population growth is made of birth rate, death rate and migration. When death rates fall with medicine and food while birth rates stay high, numbers rise fast — the middle stage of the demographic transition. In developed countries both rates are usually low, growth slow or negative; in many developing countries a young population and a high birth rate have meant fast growth. India is among the world’s largest populations; China, parts of Africa, small islands — patterns differ. Variation among nations is this difference, not one world figure: density, age structure, urban share all change.
The link to environment is also written as a simple formula: impact ≈ population × affluence × technology (I ≈ P × A × T). Few people can still destroy much if consumption is huge; many people press even a small resource. Carrying capacity is the load a system can hold over time. Unit 2’s over-extraction gets a face of numbers here. Migration presses cities — Unit 6’s energy problem joins that crowd.
Demographic transition in four stages is the usual book diagram: (1) high birth, high death, slow growth; (2) death falls, birth stays high, fast growth — “explosion” lives here; (3) birth falls, growth slows; (4) both low, growth slow or negative. Nations sit on different rungs, which is “variation among nations.” Density, age structure (a young pyramid versus an ageing one) and urban share change the environmental load even at the same head-count.
I ≈ P × A × T: impact is not head-count alone. Few people with huge consumption can wreck more than many people with a light footprint. Carrying capacity is the load a system can hold over time. Migration into cities joins Unit 6’s urban energy. Unit 2’s over-extraction gets a face of numbers here.
I ≈ P × A × T:

2 Population explosion and family welfare
Population explosion names that fast rise when numbers outrun resource, work, water, housing and school. Results: slums, falling groundwater, forest pressure, unemployment, load on health services. India began a family-planning programme in 1952; the later name is family welfare — not only fewer births, but mother-and-child health, spacing, vaccine, nutrition, education. A history of coercion is a warning; lasting success comes from education, women’s autonomy and health services.
Girls’ education and age at marriage are held to be tied to birth rate. A small family is not a punishment for poverty; it is choice and health. Family welfare is not a sterilisation slogan. Explosion is when growth outruns resource and services. A dry region’s water and land limits make that meaning clear.
Family welfare in India began as family planning in 1952; the later name insists on mother-and-child health, spacing, vaccine, nutrition and education, not only a birth-count. Lasting fall in birth rate tracks girls’ schooling and age at marriage more than a slogan. A history of coercion is a warning: health services and women’s autonomy last; force does not.
A small family is choice and health, not a punishment for poverty. Explosion is when numbers outrun water, work, housing and school — a dry region’s wells make that meaning concrete. The programme is social policy inside this paper, not a biology practical.
3 Environment and human health
Health is not only a hospital; it is air, water, food, housing and the workplace. Dirty air is asthma and heart; dirty water is cholera, typhoid, dysentery, worms; pesticide residue; heavy metals; stove smoke inside the house (Unit 5’s PM indoors). Both under-nutrition and heavy processed food are disease. Climate extremes — heat wave, flood — kill directly and move malaria–dengue belts. Sanitation, clean drinking water, solid waste, green shade are environmental tools of health.
Occupational health joins mine and factory dust and chemicals. Mental health touches noise and crowding. Environment and human health is the join of pollution and disease, not a vitamin list. A local drain and kiln show that join to the eye.
Split disease by the environmental door: water-borne (cholera, typhoid, dysentery, worms), air-borne and indoor smoke (asthma, tuberculosis risk, stove PM), vector-borne (malaria, dengue — water and climate shift the mosquito). Pesticide residue and heavy metals are chemical doors. Under-nutrition and heavy processed food are both disease. Heat wave and flood kill directly.
Sanitation, clean drinking water, solid-waste control and green shade are environmental tools of health, not extras beside the hospital. Occupational dust and chemicals join mine and factory. Environment and human health is pollution meeting the body.
4 Human rights
Human rights are the claims a person needs in order to live with dignity — life, liberty, equality, education, health. A clean environment is slowly read in that same family: without breath and water the right to life is incomplete. In India, Article 21 (life and personal liberty) has been drawn by the courts toward a healthy surroundings. Directive Principle 48A asks the State to protect the environment; Fundamental Duty 51A(g) asks the citizen to protect forest, lake and wildlife. Stockholm 1972 gave environment a rights language.
Displacement (Unit 6) is a rights question — information, consent, livelihood. If pollution falls on a poor settlement, equality breaks. Rights are not only a court; the right to information, a clean-water campaign, women’s safety join environmental policy. Article 21, 48A, 51A(g) — hold the sense.

5 Value education
Value education says what is right, fair and beautiful, not only what pays. Environmental values: non-harm toward living things, restraint in consumption, the custom of a shared tank and forest, the next generation’s claim (Unit 4’s ethical and option values, Unit 6’s ethics). The undergraduate paper’s aim is not a specialist but a citizen with values — Unit 1’s awareness becoming character. Family, school, place of worship, media shape values; advertising also shapes consumerism.
Value without knowledge is a slogan; knowledge without value is a weapon. Value education is not a moral lecture; it is environmental habit — sorting waste, saving water, not tormenting living things, not spreading false medicine and superstition.
Environmental values the books name: non-harm toward living things, restraint in consumption, the custom of a shared tank and forest, the next generation’s claim (Unit 4’s ethical and option values). This undergraduate paper’s aim is a citizen with those values, not a specialist — Unit 1’s awareness becoming character. Family, school, place of worship and media shape values; advertising also shapes consumerism.
Value without knowledge is a slogan; knowledge without value is a tool that can wreck. Value education here is habit — sorting waste, saving water, not tormenting living things, not spreading false medicine — not a moral lecture with no conduct.

6 HIV / AIDS
HIV is the virus that attacks cells of the immune system. AIDS names the serious stage of that infection when the body cannot fight ordinary infections. Main routes of spread: unsafe sex, infected blood/needle, mother to child (pregnancy, birth, breastfeeding — medical advice lowers the risk). It does not spread by touch, shared food, mosquito, clothes, ordinary contact with sweat. That distinction is science — stigma is not science.
Prevention: safer behaviour, tested blood, a new needle, testing and care in pregnancy. Antiretroviral medicine lengthens life; a vaccine is not yet an easy public answer. The join to environment–health: poverty, migration, ignorance, distance from care raise risk. The syllabus places this in the population unit because the illness is society’s, not only a laboratory’s. Respect and testing are larger medicine than stigma.
7 Women and child welfare
Women are often the first managers of water, fuel, fodder and the field — when a resource shrinks, their time and health are cut first. Stove smoke inside the house reaches them and children more. A girl’s education is tied to birth rate, nutrition and family welfare. Child welfare: vaccine, nutrition, protection from child labour, clean water, a school toilet. When the environment breaks, a child’s growth and infection are the most sensitive.
Policy: mother-and-child health, services such as anganwadi, safer fuel (LPG / a better stove), drinking water nearby, a share in property and decision. Chipko’s memory from Unit 1: women’s leadership in conservation is historical. The woman–environment link is resource-work, indoor air and education. Child welfare is health and surroundings, not only a toy.
When fuelwood and water sit far, it is usually women and girls who walk; hours lost are school and rest lost, and the stove’s smoke is indoor air pollution in their lungs and in children’s. A girl’s education is tied to birth rate and nutrition (family welfare). Child welfare is vaccine, food, protection from labour, clean water, a school toilet — when the surroundings break, growth and infection show first.
Policy tools: mother-and-child health, anganwadi, safer fuel (LPG or a better stove), drinking water nearby, a share in property and decision. Chipko’s memory: women’s leadership in conservation is historical, not a footnote. Woman–environment is resource-work plus indoor air plus schooling.
8 Information technology in environment and health
Information technology is the speed of data, map and message. Remote sensing and GIS show forest cover, crop, flood, city spread. Pollution sensors and open data tell air quality. In health: telemedicine, disease watch, vaccine records, a confidential HIV-counselling line. Disaster warning reaches SMS and app (Unit 5’s cyclone). Public-awareness campaigns spread on digital media — Unit 1’s media is faster here, rumour too.
Limits: e-waste is Unit 5’s load; data centres use energy; a digital split can leave a village out. IT is a tool, not magic — a wrong model can still justify a wrong dam. The role of IT in environment and health is map, watch, health record and warning, not only social media.
Remote sensing is the satellite (or aircraft) picture of forest cover, flood, crop and city spread. GIS is the computer map that layers those pictures with wells, roads and parks so a decision can see them together. Sensors and open data report air quality. Health IT: telemedicine, disease watch, vaccine records, a confidential counselling line. Disaster warning reaches SMS and app.
Limits: e-waste (Unit 5), energy-hungry data centres, a digital split that leaves a village out. A wrong model can still justify a wrong dam — IT is a tool. The official role is map, watch, health record and warning, not only a social-media campaign.

9 Field work — local environmental assets
The first field task is a visit to a local area to document environmental assets — river, forest, grassland, hill, mountain. Write the river, tank, range or desert habitat of your own district: name, season, use, pressure — not a tourism brochure. A canal, a johad, khejri, a grass plain, a desert bird can be assets; each student writes their own village.
An asset is Units 2–4 alive: forest resource, ecosystem, diversity. In the field look — who drinks the water, how heavy the grazing, where the waste sits. That is the eye of in-situ conservation. There is no separate practical exam; the scheme still allows a question on what you would see.
A field note is not a tourism brochure. For an asset — river, tank, johad, forest patch, grassland, hill, desert habitat — write: local name, season you went, who uses it (drink, graze, fish, fuel), what pressure you saw (dump, pump, felling, overgraze), one plant and one bird you can actually name. Inventing a bustard sighting is false; writing the grassland and its wire is true.
There is no separate practical exam; the scheme still allows a question on local ecology. The asset is Units 2–4 alive. In-situ conservation on the page is a park; in the field it is whether this tank still holds water in May.
10 Polluted site, common living things, simple ecosystem
Second field line: a local polluted site — urban drain, rural pesticide runoff, industrial chimney, agricultural waterlogging. Signs: smell, colour, foam, dust, dead fish, a dump — Unit 5’s cause and effect on the eye. Third: study of common plants, insects, birds — khejri, aak, butterfly, crow, pigeon, sparrow, local names are enough; if the bustard is rare, write respect for the grassland, do not invent a sighting. Fourth: a simple ecosystem — pond, river, hill slope — name producer, consumer, decomposer from Unit 3.
Keep these four field tasks as a checklist. (1) Assets — river / forest / grassland / hill / mountain of your district. (2) Polluted site — urban drain, rural pesticide runoff, industrial chimney, agricultural waterlogging; signs: smell, colour, foam, dust, dead fish, dump. (3) Common plants, insects, birds — local names; khejri, aak, butterfly, crow, pigeon, sparrow are enough if they are what you saw. (4) Simple ecosystem — pond, river or hill slope: name one producer, one consumer, one decomposer from Unit 3.
A question can ask what you would look for, not a lab report. Do not invent a rare sighting. Field work is knowledge of what to see because local-ecology questions are allowed; it is not a hidden practical paper.
