Unit 3 · Ecosystems

This unit covers ecosystem: concept; structure and function; producers, consumers and decomposers; energy flow; ecological succession; food chains, food webs and ecological pyramids; then introduction, types, characteristic features, structure and function of forest, grassland, desert and aquatic ecosystems (ponds, streams, lakes, rivers, oceans, estuaries).

1 Concept of an ecosystem

An ecosystem is a working unit of a living community plus its abiotic surroundings, in which energy flows and matter cycles. The word is tied to A. G. Tansley (1935): organisms do not live as a list; they form a system with soil, water, light and climate. A pond is a small ecosystem; a forest is larger; the biosphere is the largest. Boundaries are sometimes drawn for study. An ecosystem is autotrophs + heterotrophs + abiotic factors + their interactions, not a catalogue of trees.

Ecology is the science of those relations; the ecosystem is the working sample. Habitat is the address — where a living thing lives. Niche is the work — what role it plays there. Artificial ecosystems (a crop, an aquarium, a city garden) are human-steered; natural ones are more self-regulating. Both still show producers, consumers and decomposers.

Tansley’s point is that organisms plus climate, soil and water make one working system, not a list of plants beside a list of rocks. A pond, a crop field and a city park are all ecosystems if energy flows and matter cycles there; the last two are human-steered (artificial), the first more self-regulating (natural). Habitat is the address; niche is the role. Confusing those two words is a common definition fault.

The biosphere is the largest ecosystem; a drop of pond water can be treated as the smallest sample. Boundaries are drawn for study — a fence is not a magic wall. Unit 2 named stocks (forest, water, land); this unit names those stocks as living machines. Concept first: system, energy, cycle. Types (forest, grass, desert, water) come after structure and function are clear.

2 Structure and function

Structure is read in two rooms. Abiotic: climate (heat, light, rain, humidity, wind), inorganic (water, carbon dioxide, oxygen, nitrogen, mineral salts), organic (humus, dead remains). Biotic: producers, consumers, decomposers — the next lesson. Species → population → community → ecosystem is the ladder of structure. Standing crop is the living mass at one moment; productivity is new biomass over time — they are not the same number.

Function grows from structure. Energy flow runs one way: sun to green plants to consumers, leaving as heat. Nutrient cycles (C, N, P, water) turn — decomposers return them to soil and air. Productivity, feeding relations, succession and homeostasis (inner balance) are the large names of function. Without decomposers, nutrients lock; without producers, energy does not enter. That is why the syllabus prints structure and function as one point, not two books.

Abiotic factors set the conditions: light and temperature decide photosynthesis; water and salts decide who can live; humus is stored nutrient. Biotic structure is the living rooms — producers, consumers, decomposers — plus the ladder species → population → community → ecosystem. Standing crop is biomass at one moment; productivity is new biomass over time. Mixing those two numbers is a common error in a function question.

Function is what the structure does: one-way energy flow, cycling of C, N, P and water, feeding relations, succession, and homeostasis (the system’s tendency to hold a balance). Without producers, energy does not enter. Without decomposers, nutrients lock in dead matter. That is why the official point prints structure and function together. A forest’s function is not “trees exist”; it is production, consumption, decay, water holding and a microclimate.

3 Producers, consumers, decomposers

Producers (autotrophs) make their own food by photosynthesis or chemosynthesis. Green plants and plant plankton are the base of land and water systems. Consumers (heterotrophs) eat others’ carbon. Primary consumers are herbivores — grasshopper, deer, a small pond fish that eats plants. Secondary consumers eat herbivores. Tertiary and top predators sit higher. Omnivores (human beings, bear, crow) can touch more than one level. Detritivores — earthworm, termite, some insects — break dead matter into pieces; decomposers break it chemically.

Decomposers are mainly bacteria and fungi. Without them, leaf and carcass would lie, nutrients would lock, new production would stop. They are not only “cleaners”; they are the gatekeepers of the cycle. A second mistake is to think producers are only large trees — in a pond, algae are often the main producers. A third is to keep human beings outside the diagram; farms and towns add consumers. Control is a later question; presence is this one.

Autotrophs make food: green plants and algae by photosynthesis; a few bacteria by chemosynthesis. Herbivores are primary consumers; carnivores that eat herbivores are secondary; a top carnivore may be tertiary. Omnivores touch more than one level. Parasites and scavengers sit on the same web. Detritivores (earthworm, termite) mechanically break dead matter; decomposers (bacteria, fungi) chemically return it as salts — related jobs, not one word.

In a pond the main producers are often microscopic algae, not a tree. Human beings are consumers in farm and town diagrams; leaving them out is a pretty picture, not this paper. Control of pests or sewage is Unit 5; this lesson only places the three groups. If decomposers vanish, the cycle stops even if the forest still looks green for a season.

4 Energy flow

The sun is the last source of energy. Green plants catch a small share. Gross primary productivity (GPP) is total photosynthesis. Net primary productivity (NPP) is what remains after plant respiration — that is what herbivores can use. At each trophic level most energy leaves as respiration and heat. Lindeman’s ten-per-cent rule: about 10% of the energy at one level reaches the next (real figures can sit between about 5 and 20%; the memory-line is 10%). That is why chains stay short — four or five levels rarely hold more.

Energy flow is unidirectional — sun → producer → consumer → heat; it does not return to the sun to become plant again. Matter is cyclic — the same nitrogen turns again and again. Do not draw both as one arrow. The stability of an ecosystem rests on a continuous entry of energy. Unit 2’s “energy needs” were machines; this lesson is the energy of living things — one word, two levels.

Only a small fraction of sunlight hitting a leaf becomes chemical energy. GPP is total photosynthesis; NPP is GPP minus the plant’s own respiration — herbivores eat from NPP, not from GPP. At each higher level, respiration and heat take most of what arrived. Lindeman’s ten-per-cent rule is the memory line (real transfer often about 5–20%). Chains stay short because the energy will not stretch further.

Energy flow is unidirectional: it does not cycle back to become sunlight for the same leaf. Nutrients do cycle. Draw two diagrams, not one arrow for both. Secondary productivity is the biomass consumers add. The stability of an ecosystem is a continuous energy income, not a stored heap. Unit 2’s “energy resources” were fuels and machines; this energy is the living budget of the system.

5 Food chains and food webs

A food chain is a linear string of who eats whom. Grass → deer → tiger is a grazing chain, starting from green plants. Dead leaf → earthworm → bird is a detritus chain, starting from dead organic matter. In a pond, algae → zooplankton → small fish → large fish is a water example. The arrow points the way energy moves — from the eaten to the eater.

In nature a living thing is not tied to one string. A food web is many chains joined — several birds may eat one insect, one bird may eat several insects. The web lets a system take a shock; if one species falls, other paths remain. Biomagnification is the reverse price of a chain — a lasting poison gathers in the top predator; Unit 5 will open that as pollution. Here it is enough that the top of a long chain sits at risk. A chain is one path; a web is many paths.

Grazing chains start from living green plants; detritus chains start from dead organic matter. Both run in the same forest: a deer on grass and an earthworm on leaf-litter. A pond chain is typically phytoplankton → zooplankton → small fish → large fish. The arrow is energy’s direction, eaten to eater. A food web is many such chains cross-linked, so a shock to one species need not collapse the whole.

Length is limited by the ten-per-cent rule. A web is more stable than a single chain; a monoculture field is a short, brittle chain. Biomagnification is the poison that concentrates toward the top predator — Unit 5’s water and pesticide lessons use that word. Here it is enough that the top of a long chain is the risk seat. Chain = one path; web = many paths.

6 Ecological pyramids

Ecological pyramids show trophic levels from base to peak. Three forms. A pyramid of numbers counts individuals. In a grassland it is usually upright (much grass, few tigers); from a tree to its insects it can invert — one tree, thousands of insects. A pyramid of biomass is dry weight. On land it is usually upright; in some waters plant plankton weigh less than the consumers that eat them fast, so the pyramid inverts. A pyramid of energy is always upright — energy falls at each step, by the ten-per-cent rule.

Energy pyramids do not invert. Number and biomass can. Pyramids often leave decomposers at the side; that does not put them outside the system. Standing crop is one moment; energy flow runs through time — so the energy pyramid is the most trustworthy comparison.

Three pyramids, three measurements. Numbers can invert (one tree, many insects). Biomass can invert in some waters where tiny producers turn over fast and weigh less at a snapshot than the fish that eat them. Energy cannot invert: each step loses heat, so the energy pyramid is always upright and is the fairest comparison across systems.

Decomposers are often drawn to the side; they still belong to the system. A pyramid is a snapshot of trophic structure, not a photograph of every species. Standing crop (biomass now) is not the same as energy flow (through time). When a question asks which pyramid never inverts, the answer is energy.

7 Ecological succession

Ecological succession is the orderly change of communities on a site until a relatively stable climax arrives. Primary succession starts on bare rock, new lava, a new island — soil must be made; pioneers are often lichen, algae, moss. Secondary succession starts where soil remains — a burned forest, a fallow field, a floodplain; it is faster. A hydrosere moves from water toward land (pond to marsh to forest). A xerosere moves from dry bare ground toward moisture and vegetation.

Each stage changes the surroundings for the next — trees give shade, humus holds water. The climax is read as climate-fitted; if people cut it, succession starts again from behind. Pioneer is not climax; primary is not secondary. Succession is a sequence, not shapeless chaos. Diversity is often higher at climax.

Primary succession on rock or new lava is slow because soil must be made; pioneers (lichen, moss, algae) weather the surface and add organic matter. Secondary succession on a burned forest, a fallow field or a floodplain is faster because soil remains. A hydrosere is pond → marsh → meadow → forest; a xerosere is dry bare ground toward a moister vegetated state. Each seral stage alters light, water and humus for the next.

Climax is the relatively stable community fitted to the climate; people or fire can knock it back and succession starts again. Pioneer is not climax; primary is not secondary; hydrosere is not xerosere. Diversity often rises toward climax, then may settle. Succession is orderly change, not shapeless chaos, and not the same word as a food chain.

8 Forest ecosystem

A forest ecosystem is tree-dominated. Remember the layers (stratification) — upper canopy, middle trees, shrub, herb floor, underground roots. Producers are mainly trees and understorey. Consumers run from insects to elephant and tiger. Decomposers work on a moist, shaded floor — leaf-litter cycles fast. Rainforest is highly productive and diverse; temperate forest is seasonal; dry deciduous and thorn forest are types of drier India. Function: high biomass, carbon store, water cycle, soil holding — Unit 2’s forest resource is here a living system.

Features: a relatively stable microclimate, a complex food web, long-lived producers. Threats — cutting, fragmentation, fire, invasive species — open in Units 4–5. Forest on a hill slope is tied to soil and stream: trees gone, succession steps back, flood below. Structure and function are layers + producer–consumer–decomposer + energy/nutrients, not a tree list.

9 Grassland ecosystem

Grassland sits where trees are few and grasses and herbs dominate — less rain than forest, more than desert. Savanna, prairie, steppe and India’s grass plains belong to this family. Producers are grasses; a large share of biomass is in roots, so the stand can return after grazing and fire. Consumers are grazing ungulates, rodents, insects; predators are wolf, bird, reptile. Decomposers work in the soil. Chains can look simple; a web is still there.

Function: pasture, binding soil, storing carbon in roots. Overgrazing from Unit 2 is the wound here — grass gone, then erosion, shrub or sand. Fire can be a natural regulator; repeated human fire harms. Grassland is not an unfinished forest; it is its own ecosystem. Features: open light, seasonal growth, drought-hardy grass, savanna at the tree-line.

10 Desert ecosystem

Desert is low rain, high evaporation, a wide swing of temperature. Producers are xerophytes — thick skin, deep or spreading roots, small leaves, sometimes photosynthesis in the stem. Consumers are often night-active and spare with water. Biomass and productivity are lower than forest; feeding relations are still complete. Dew, groundwater and seasonal rain are the abiotic keys. The khejri and other thorn-shrubs of a hot desert are this lesson’s living face, not a geography chapter.

Function still runs on a limited energy flow. Overgrazing, badly used canal water, mines and roads speed desertification — Unit 2’s land lesson is alive here. A cold desert is a different climate with the same grammar: water scarce, adaptation sharp. Life in a desert is not zero; it is little, and fitted. Structure: scattered producers, small consumer webs, slow decay in dry soil.

11 Aquatic ecosystems — pond, stream, lake, river

Split fresh water in two families. Standing (lentic) — pond, lake. Flowing (lotic) — stream, river. A pond is small and shallow; light can reach the bed; producers are rooted plants and algae; animals are plankton, insects, frog, fish; decomposers sit in bottom mud. Zones: littoral (edge), limnetic (open light water), profundal (dark deep, in a deep lake). A lake is larger and deeper; in summer a heat stratification can form.

A stream and a river hold more oxygen, a faster current, a bed of stone or sand. Producers are often periphyton (a film on stone) and bank plants; fish are fitted to current. Pollution and dams that cut flow turn this system lake-like or mud-like. A river carries silt and nutrients toward the mouth — the estuary is the next lesson. Pond = small standing sample; lake = deep standing; stream = fast small flow; river = long transport. All four do the same three jobs — produce, consume, decompose — in water.

Summer layering of a deep lake has three names: a warm epilimnion, a thermocline, a cold hypolimnion. Cooler months can mix oxygen through the depth. A shallow pond often has no true dark profundal. Characteristic features the syllabus wants: pond — light throughout, a field sample; lake — depth and layers; stream — current and oxygen; river — length, silt, sensitive to dams. Structure and function are still producer–consumer–decomposer plus energy and nutrients, only the medium is fresh water.

12 Oceans and estuaries

The ocean is the planet’s largest aquatic ecosystem. The photic (euphotic) layer is the upper water where photosynthesis runs — plant plankton are the main producers, a large share of world oxygen and food. Below, the aphotic dark rests on consumers and decomposers and on carbon falling from above. Coast, coral and open ocean have different structures; this heading is ecosystem, not a navy list. Salinity, current and heat are the abiotic factors. The food web is huge — plankton to whale.

An estuary is where a river’s fresh water meets the sea’s salt. Salinity rises and falls, tides bring nutrients, water stays nutrient-rich — productivity is counted very high. Mangrove, shrimp, crab and young fish are nursed here. Ports, dams and pollution cut them. The syllabus climbs pond to estuary: small fresh standing → flowing → vast salt → the meeting of both. Every ecosystem speaks one grammar — structure, energy, chain, succession — in the accent of its place. How many kinds sit on that grammar is Unit 4.

The ocean’s photic layer is where phytoplankton produce a large share of the planet’s oxygen and food; below, the aphotic dark lives on falling carbon. Salinity, current and temperature are the abiotic keys. Coast, coral reef and open ocean differ in structure; this heading is still ecosystem, not a navy map. The food web runs plankton to large fish and whale.

An estuary mixes river fresh water with sea salt; tides pulse nutrients; productivity is counted among the highest on Earth. Mangrove, shrimp, crab and juvenile fish are nursed here. Ports, dams that cut silt, and pollution wound this meeting-place first. The syllabus climbs pond → stream/river → ocean → estuary so that every aquatic type it named is present. Unit 4 will count how many kinds of life sit on that grammar.
