1 Definition and three levels

Biodiversity (biological diversity) is the variety of life on Earth — from genes to ecosystems. In the language of the 1992 Convention on Biological Diversity it is variability among living organisms from terrestrial, marine and other aquatic ecosystems and the ecological complexes of which they are part; it includes diversity within species, between species and of ecosystems. Genetic diversity is the difference of genes and varieties inside one species — thousands of folk rice types, cattle breeds, wheat lines. It buffers a crop against disease and drought; a field on one variety is at risk.

Species diversity is the number of species in a place and how unlike they are. Ecosystem diversity is the variety of systems — forest, grass, desert, wetland, coral, farm landscape — Unit 3’s types become “how many kinds of home.” The three levels join: genes lost, a species weakens; a species gone, the web tears; a system cut, genes and species lose their house. Counting only tigers is an incomplete definition.

The 1992 Convention language is the college definition: variability among living organisms, including diversity within species, between species and of ecosystems. Genetic diversity is folk rice, wheat lines, cattle breeds — a buffer against disease and drought; one variety on a whole belt is a risk. Species diversity is how many kinds, and how unlike, in a place. Ecosystem diversity is how many kinds of home (Unit 3’s forest, grass, desert, wetland, coral, farm).

The three levels join. Genes lost, a species weakens. A species gone, a web tears. A system cut, genes and species lose the house. Counting only tigers or only trees is an incomplete definition. Biodiversity is the variety of life from genes to ecosystems, not a synonym for “wildlife photography.”

2 Biogeographical classification of India

Biogeographical classification divides a country by how living things are distributed — climate, soil and history decide which species sit where. For India the Wildlife Institute / Rodgers–Panwar outline of ten biogeographic zones is the usual college map: Trans-Himalaya (cold dry height such as Ladakh–Spiti), Himalaya, Desert (Thar), Semi-arid (a large Gujarat–Rajasthan belt, the Aravallis), Western Ghats, Deccan peninsula, Gangetic plain, North-east, Islands (Andaman–Nicobar, Lakshadweep), Coasts. Ten zones. The lines are ecological belts, not state borders.

The map sets conservation priorities — the Great Indian Bustard of the desert and the lion-tailed macaque of the Western Ghats do not live by one policy. Rajasthan sits mainly in desert and semi-arid zones; the Aravalli is an old range and a living bridge. Local plants, insects and birds speak these zones. Trans-Himalaya is not the same belt as Himalaya. World zoogeographic realms (Oriental and the rest) are another chapter; this point is India’s inner split.

Ten zones (Rodgers–Panwar / Wildlife Institute map) are the usual list: Trans-Himalaya, Himalaya, Desert (Thar), Semi-arid (Aravalli–Gujarat–Rajasthan belt), Western Ghats, Deccan peninsula, Gangetic plain, North-east, Islands, Coasts. They are ecological belts, not state borders. Trans-Himalaya is not “the Himalaya.” Rajasthan sits mainly in desert and semi-arid; the Aravalli is an old range and a living bridge.

The map sets conservation priority: a bustard policy is a grassland policy; a lion-tailed macaque policy is a Western Ghat policy. Local plants, insects and birds speak the zone. World zoogeographic realms are another chapter; this official bullet is India’s inner split. Ten names, and the idea that climate–soil–history decide who lives where.

3 Values of biodiversity

The syllabus names six values. Consumptive use comes straight into the house — fuel, fodder, fish, fruit, folk medicine, timber that never crosses a market. Productive use goes to trade — timber, rubber, fibre, pharma raw material, tourism packages. Social value is culture and community — sacred groves, festivals, tribal identity, the custom of saving seed. Ethical value says a living thing has a right to exist; it is not a human toy; compassion and duty sit here.

Aesthetic value is beauty, quiet, art and the tourist’s eye — a lion at Gir, a desert sunset, coral colour. Option value is an unknown future need — a shrub may be tomorrow’s medicine; if varieties die, the option dies. Consumptive is the home, productive the market; ethical is the right, aesthetic is beauty; option is future possibility. The list exists so conservation is not only feeling: it is economy and ethics together.

Six official values, none optional. Consumptive: fuel, fodder, fish, fruit, folk medicine, timber that never crosses a market. Productive: timber, rubber, fibre, pharma, tourism packages that do. Social: sacred grove, festival, tribal identity, seed custom. Ethical: a living thing’s right to exist, not a human toy. Aesthetic: beauty, quiet, art, the tourist’s eye. Option: unknown future use — a shrub as tomorrow’s medicine; if the variety dies, the option dies.

The list exists so conservation is not only feeling. Economy (consumptive, productive, option) and ethics (ethical, social, aesthetic) sit together. Direct use is not the whole value; a tank that is never fished still holds option, aesthetic and ethical value. Unit 6’s environmental ethics opens from the ethical line here.

4 Global, national and local levels

At the global level known species are counted above a million, unknown still more — insects and microbes are unfinished. Tropical forest, coral and the equatorial belt are storehouses; poles have fewer species, sometimes sharp adaptations. The national count for India is the usual college figure: about 2.4% of the world’s land, about 7–8% of known species (books sit near 8%). That ratio is the argument “much life on little land.” Mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, flowering plants — India ranks high in several groups.

The local level is the village tank, the common pasture, a sacred peepal, birds on a canal bank. A global figure without a local home is empty: the Great Indian Bustard is on a national list and lives or dies on desert grassland. Invasive species, monoculture and filling a pond kill local diversity first. Three levels are three scales — a treaty global, an Act national, a tank-and-pasture local.

Global: more than a million named species, many more unnamed, tropics and coral as storehouses. National: India about 2.4% of world land and about 7–8% of known species — the “much life on little land” argument; high ranks in several groups of plants and animals. Local: the village tank, pasture, peepal, canal birds. A global treaty without a local home is an empty figure: the Great Indian Bustard lives or dies on desert grassland.

Invasive species, monoculture and a filled pond kill local diversity first. Three levels are three scales of action — a convention global, an Act national, a tank-and-pasture local. Do not answer “biodiversity of India” with only a world total, or only a tiger count.

5 India as a mega-diversity nation

A mega-diversity nation is a country that holds a large share of the world’s biodiversity. India is counted among them (commonly a list of about 17). The reason is geography, not magic: Himalaya to islands, Thar to north-eastern rainforest, Western Ghat rain, two seas, monsoon — many ecosystems inside one border. A centre of origin for crops also sits nearby: rice, mango, sugarcane, many spices; livestock breeds and medicinal plants are part of the same wealth. Endemic species are especially dense in the Western Ghats, Andaman–Nicobar and the north-east.

Mega-diversity is pride with a duty. Population, farm expansion, mines, roads and hunting cut the same wealth. “India has tigers, so all is safe” is the wrong close; the tiger is one indicator, not the whole. India is a mega-diversity nation because of species richness on a small land share, many biomes and high endemism — not because it is the world’s largest land (that claim is Russia’s or Canada’s).

It is also a centre of origin and diversity for crops (rice, mango, sugarcane, spices) and for livestock breeds and medicinal plants.

6 Hot-spots of biodiversity

A hot-spot (Norman Myers) is a region with a very high count of endemic flowering plants and a large share of original habitat already lost — richness plus threat. World lists in the college books run around 34–36. Four hot-spots linked to India are the ones to hold: Himalaya; Western Ghats (often counted with Sri Lanka as one unit); Indo-Burma (part of the north-east); Sundaland (Nicobar sits in this family). An older two-name list — Western Ghats and Eastern Himalaya — still appears in some papers; the newer list asks four names.

A hot-spot is not a synonym for a pretty tourist site. The test is scientific — endemism and habitat loss. The Thar is not on the hot-spot list; the bustard and its grassland are still a national priority. Not being a hot-spot is not a reason to skip conservation. Western Ghat tea–coffee–mines and Himalayan roads–dams meet the same test.

Four names linked to India: Himalaya; Western Ghats (often with Sri Lanka); Indo-Burma (part of the north-east); Sundaland (Nicobar).

7 Threats — habitat loss, poaching, man–wildlife conflict

The syllabus names three threats clearly. Habitat loss is the largest — felling, filling wetlands, river dams, mines, cities, monoculture. A species cannot flee if the house breaks; a fragmented forest becomes an island, a small population slides toward extinction. Poaching is illegal hunting and trade — tiger, rhino, ivory, pangolin scale, birds, turtle — market and custom both drive it. When trade is international, local patrol is not enough.

Man–wildlife conflict is when a shrinking home or a cut corridor brings animals onto field, village, road — elephant on crop, nilgai on field, leopard on dog and goat, pig in a settlement. The bustard’s grassland meets wire, dog, power and grazing as conflict; Aravalli leopard stories are the same heading. The answer is not only a gun — corridor, compensation, fence, awareness, a line between graze and farm. Invasive species, pollution and climate are other pressures; the three named threats are habitat loss, poaching and man–wildlife conflict. Forest-mine-dam from Unit 2 return here as habitat loss.

8 Endangered and endemic species of India

An endemic species has a natural range limited to a small region — lion-tailed macaque and Nilgiri tahr in the Western Ghats, sangai of Manipur’s lake, many Andaman birds, some Thar grasses and reptiles. Endemic does not always mean rare, but a small home means one habitat loss can be enough. Endangered is IUCN Red List language — a high risk of extinction. Hold the ladder: extinct, extinct in the wild, critically endangered, endangered, vulnerable, near threatened, least concern. Stable examples: tiger, Asiatic lion (Gir), one-horned rhinoceros, Great Indian Bustard, olive ridley, gharial, musk deer.

The Great Indian Bustard is a national bird-crisis tied to Rajasthan — if the grassland goes, the species can go here. Red List ranks move; the principle is stable: endemic = limited range, endangered = extinction risk, both can be true at once (Nilgiri tahr). Folk crop varieties are also “endangered genetic diversity” — not only wild animals. Project Tiger-type programmes are in-situ tools for the next lesson.

Endemic = natural range limited to a small region (lion-tailed macaque, Nilgiri tahr, sangai, many Andaman birds, some Thar reptiles). Endemic is not always “rare,” but a small home means one habitat loss can finish the species. Endangered = IUCN high risk of extinction. The Red List ladder (extinct → least concern) is the language; ranks move, the idea does not. Examples that stay in the books: tiger, Asiatic lion (Gir), one-horned rhinoceros, Great Indian Bustard, olive ridley, gharial, musk deer.

The bustard is a Rajasthan-tied national bird crisis: grassland gone, species gone here. Both labels can be true at once (Nilgiri tahr). Folk crop varieties are endangered genetic diversity, not only wild animals. Project Tiger-type work is an in-situ tool for the next lesson, not a substitute for this definition pair.

9 In-situ conservation

In situ means saving a living thing in its natural home — house included. A National Park is a strictly protected area; human use is tightly limited. A Wildlife Sanctuary can allow some regulated use. A Biosphere reserve is a large landscape — core, buffer, transition; people are not wholly outside, sustainable use sits at the edge. Conservation reserves, community reserves and sacred groves are community in-situ forms. Project Tiger and Project Elephant save habitat and corridor in order to save the species.

Desert National Park, Ranthambore, Sariska, Keoladeo (Bharatpur) are enough as names to show the method: in-situ saves the whole machine of the home — prey, predator, grass, water. Limits: tourist pressure, encroachment, small parks whose corridor is cut. The sections of the Wildlife Act sit in Unit 6; here the method and the reason are enough. In situ = on the natural habitat.

10 Ex-situ conservation

Ex situ means saving outside the habitat — zoo, botanical garden, aquarium, seed bank, gene bank, tissue culture, cryopreservation (genes in ice). When the home is already broken, the population is tiny, or seed can be dried and stored, this path works. Crop varieties sit in a seed bank; a rare plant in a garden; a tiger may breed in a cage — but a wild tiger’s aim is forest again. Ex-situ is an insurance policy, not a full substitute for home: behaviour, migration and companion species are not learned in a lab.

The two methods complete each other. In-situ without ex-situ, a flood or fire can wipe varieties; ex-situ without in-situ, the living thing stays a cage object. In-situ and ex-situ are two ends of one syllabus point. Diversity is wealth at three levels, India is a large house of it, threat starts with habitat, rescue is at home and in the bank.

Official point: conservation of biodiversity — in situ and ex situ. Diversity is wealth at three levels; threat starts with habitat; rescue is at home and in the bank.
