Unit 5 · Translation and prose

Two set texts that are not originally English lyric. Dinabandhu Mitra’s Bengali play Nil Darpan (1860), in Michael Madhusudan Dutt’s English as The Indigo Planting Mirror (Calcutta, 1861). A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, “Patriotism beyond Politics and Religion,” chapter 5 of Ignited Minds: Unleashing the Power Within India (Penguin, 2002). Sisir Kumar Das and Sumit Sarkar (Unit 1) frame the play as Bengal Renaissance theatre of protest. Kalam is twenty-first-century public English. Keep the distinction: one is translation of a colonial wound; one is a civic essay. Both still answer “Indian writing through English” on this paper.

Dinabandhu Mitra का बांग्ला नाटक Nil Darpan (1860), Michael Madhusudan Dutt की अंग्रेज़ी में The Indigo Planting Mirror (कलकत्ता, 1861)। A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, “Patriotism beyond Politics and Religion,” Ignited Minds (Penguin, 2002) का अध्याय 5।

1 Nil Darpan — origin and the English book

Nil Darpan means the indigo mirror: a play held up so planters and the capital can see the ryot’s face. Dinabandhu Mitra (1830–1873), a government official who had seen indigo districts, writes it in Bengali in 1860, in the climate of the indigo disturbances. Ryots were forced to plant indigo instead of food, paid wretchedly, beaten by factory men. The play is Bengal Renaissance theatre (Unit 1, lesson 9): modern social stage, not a Puranic dance. Michael Madhusudan Dutt — the same Madhusudan who began in English verse and then made Bengali epic — translates it. The 1861 Calcutta title page says “translated from the Bengali by a Native.” The Reverend James Long published and circulated the English; he was fined Rs 1,000 and imprisoned for one month. The translation thus enters colonial law as well as literature. On this paper the set English is Dutt’s, not a new twenty-first-century version.

Form: a prose drama of household and factory, melodramatic in the nineteenth-century sense — tears, deaths, villain planters with names such as Mr Wood and Mr Rose, a loyal servant (Torap), a family pulled apart. That “melodrama” is not a weakness to apologise for in a BA answer. It is the genre that could carry peasant suffering to a middle-class Calcutta audience and, in English, to officials who did not read Bengali. Call it protest play plus mirror, as the English title says. Do not call it originally Indian Writing in English. Do call it the Unit-5 proof that this course also reads India through English.

मूल Indian Writing in English मत कहो।

2 Nil Darpan — the family, the factory, the mirror

Keep a small map of names. Goluk Chunder Basu is the householder-ryot whose prosperity the factory wants to break. Soirindri his wife; Nobin Madhab the elder son who resists; Bindu Madhab the younger; Sabitri, Nobin’s wife, tied to his fate. Ray Churn, a kinsman who takes the factory’s side, shows how indigo splits kin, not only race. Planters Mr Wood and Mr Rose, and their men, demand advances, signatures, indigo rows where rice should stand. Beating, lock-up, insult of women, the loyal Torap’s courage, sickness and death following the factory’s will — the play piles these until the house is a ruin. Nobin is beaten and dies of his wounds; Goluk dies after humiliation and prison; Soirindri and Sabitri are left in wreckage. Nobin’s resistance is legal and physical; it does not save the family. The “mirror” is that English readers must watch their own countrymen as the villains, not as Kipling’s burden-bearers.

Themes: forced crop; colonial capital in the district; the ryot’s body; women’s honour as a battlefield; the Bengal literate class speaking for the peasant (Sarkar’s caution still applies: elite theatre, real wound). Pair with Markandaya: both are land and hunger, but Nectar is a woman’s memory of tenancy after 1947, and Nil Darpan is a 1860 factory-play before Gandhi. Pair with Unit 1’s Madhusudan: the translator’s life is the Renaissance double tongue. For RTC, a planter’s threat or a woman’s lament: name speaker, indigo as the crop that replaces food, the play as mirror. Do not retell every death. Do not credit Tagore with this play.

3 Kalam — Patriotism beyond Politics and Religion

Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam (1931–2015), scientist and later President, writes Ignited Minds as public argument, not as memoir only. Chapter 5, the set essay, opens from Vivekananda: better a hundred thousand hells doing good than a private liberation that ignores others. The claim of the title is the claim of the chapter: patriotism is larger than party and larger than sect. “For great men, religion is a way of making friends; small people make religion a fighting tool.” The Rig Veda line he likes — let noble thoughts come from every side — is the old Indian warrant for a modern civic English.

He builds by anecdote, not by a political-science diagram. Biju Patnaik’s friendship with Sukarno, and Patnaik’s hunger for an Indian long-range missile, show a politician whose love of the country outruns office. Gandhi in Noakhali, with riot-wounded families rather than on the Red Fort rampart on 15 August, is patriotism as service. A family memory from Rameswaram — Hindu and Muslim life sharing a tank, an idol, a jump into water — is brotherhood as practice. Syrian Christians of Kerala, A. R. Rahman, a mixed cultural India: identity can enrich “Indianness” without becoming a fighting tool. He disagrees with voices that would have India remain without nuclear defence among armed neighbours; security, for him, is part of the nation’s care, not a party toy. “No ideology is above the security and prosperity of our country. No agenda is more important than harmony among the people.”

The essay’s method is mission-talk: vision, combined action, value addition, a nation that stops belittling itself. Exam use: define patriotism as he defines it (beyond politics, beyond religion); give two anecdotes (Patnaik or Gandhi or Rameswaram); give one quoted hinge (great men / small people, or ideology not above prosperity). Do not turn the chapter into a biography of the missile programme. Do not write a communal counter-sermon. Kalam’s English is plain, hortatory, the opposite of Kolatkar’s cool camera. On this paper it closes the course: from indigo’s colonial wound to a twenty-first-century scientist asking the young to think of the nation as bigger than the individual.

Exam traps. Nil Darpan is Mitra’s Bengali play, Dutt’s English, Long the publisher who was punished — three different jobs. Indigo, not tea. Kalam’s chapter is not Wings of Fire; it is Ignited Minds, ch. 5. Patriotism here is harmony plus a strong nation, not a party manifesto. Do not treat the play as original IWE or the essay as a lyric. Section C: one 20-mark from this unit can be either the mirror-play or Kalam’s definition with anecdotes — not both in one blur.

Kalam का अध्याय Wings of Fire नहीं; Ignited Minds अध्याय 5 है।
