Unit 4 · Novel and drama
Two long texts. Kamala Markandaya, Nectar in a Sieve (1954), the rural novel of hunger, land and the tannery. Mahesh Dattani, Dance Like a Man (first staged 1989; in Collected Plays, Penguin India — a named book on this paper), the urban play of Bharatanatyam, gender and a father’s law. Meenakshi Mukherjee, The Twice Born Fiction (1971), still helps the novel: Indian tale inside English. Neither text is a lyric. A 20-mark answer needs plot and design — narrator, time, the title’s metaphor — not a character-list only. Do not copy chapters; walk the spine, then pin themes to one scene.
Kamala Markandaya, Nectar in a Sieve (1954), Mahesh Dattani, Dance Like a Man Meenakshi Mukherjee, The Twice Born Fiction (1971),
1 Markandaya — Nectar in a Sieve: story
Kamala Markandaya (1924–2004) writes the peasant woman’s chronicle that Unit 1 named as post-1947 fiction from the furrow, not from Delhi. Rukmani narrates in the first person, looking back. Married very young to Nathan, a tenant farmer without land of his own, she goes to a hut, learns to write, bears Ira (a daughter) and then sons: Arjun, Thambi, Murugan, Raja, Selvam, and last the late child Kuti. Dr Kennington — Kenny — is the white doctor who comes and goes, half helper, half scold. Kunthi, beautiful and dangerous, belongs to the same village economy of desire and blackmail.
A tannery arrives. Cash, smell, outsiders, a road. Arjun and Thambi work there, then leave for the tea estates after labour trouble. Raja is beaten to death when he is caught stealing at the tannery — hunger, not a battle. Ira, married and sent back as barren, returns. In the famine she sells her body so the household — and Kuti, Rukmani’s last infant — may eat; Kuti dies of hunger anyway. Ira later bears Sacrabani, an albino boy, from that prostitution. Do not mix the two children: Kuti is Rukmani’s son; Sacrabani is Ira’s. Drought and monsoon ruin the rice. The zamindar’s logic and the tannery’s purchase finally take the ground from under Nathan’s feet. Old, they walk to the city to find Murugan; he has vanished into a servant’s life and a broken marriage. Rukmani and Nathan break stones in a quarry, befriend Puli, a street child with raw fingers. Nathan dies on the journey home. Rukmani returns to the village with Puli and with Selvam, who has some future in Kenny’s work. The land is not restored as a pastoral. Survival is the leftover of hope.
The title quotes Coleridge: work without hope draws nectar in a sieve — sweetness that will not hold. Rukmani’s hope is the object that keeps leaking: crop, children, husband, hut. Mukherjee’s “twice-born” novel is this: an English book whose pulse is tenancy, monsoon, and a woman’s remembered speech. For plot-questions, keep the order: marriage → children → tannery → Ira’s return → famine and Kuti’s death → Ira’s child Sacrabani → eviction → city, Puli, Nathan’s death → return. Do not invent a happy restoration of the farm.
2 Markandaya — characters and themes
Rukmani is endurance with a literate mind: she writes, she bargains with Kenny, she judges Ira without throwing her out. Nathan is the tenant’s hope in the soil, slower to hate the tannery, broken by eviction, tender in the city. Ira is the daughter through whom the novel asks what a woman owes a starving household; do not confuse Kuti (Rukmani’s infant) with Sacrabani (Ira’s albino son). Kenny is colonial medicine and impatience — help that does not stay. Kunthi uses knowledge of Nathan and of Rukmani’s early visits as a whip. Puli is the city’s orphan cleverness that the village, at the end, adopts. Sons scatter along work: mill, estate, servant, death, the one who remains.
Themes to name, each with a scene. Land and tenancy: Nathan never owns; rain and the tannery both evict. Industry: the tannery is cash and stench, wages and the son’s corpse. Hunger: Kuti’s death, Ira’s bargain, stone-breaking. Gender: a girl’s barrenness as a returned wife; a mother’s body as the last pantry. Hope: the sieve; Rukmani still plants, still walks back. East/West: Kenny cannot understand why they will not simply leave the land; they cannot understand a life with no furrow. Postcolonial reading on this paper is not a jargon paragraph. It is this: English tells a ryot’s hunger without making the tannery a simple villain-machine or the village a golden past.
RTC and 8-mark questions like a short passage of rain, tannery smoke, or Nathan’s death. Answer with narrator (Rukmani), what has just been lost, and the title-metaphor if hope is leaking. Do not confuse Selvam with Murugan, or Kuti with Sacrabani. Do not call the book a “Gandhian novel” only because it is rural; Gandhi is climate in Raja Rao, not the engine here. Markandaya’s engine is the woman’s remembering voice and the failed holding of nectar.
3 Dattani — Dance Like a Man: plot
Mahesh Dattani is this paper’s original English playwright (Unit 1, lesson 6). Dance Like a Man is a two-act play that moves between the 1990s present and the 1940s–70s past in a Bangalore house. Jairaj and Ratna, once a pair of Bharatanatyam dancers, are old. Their daughter Lata is the dancer they were not allowed to finish becoming. Viswas, Lata’s fiancé, walks into family history as the outsider who must hear it. Amritlal Patel, Jairaj’s father, is dead in the present and fiercely alive in memory: a reformist public man who will fund a nation and will not fund a son who dances.
Amritlal’s rule is gender as law. Dance is for women, or for the “wrong” men (he sneers at the guru’s femininity). A man in a woman’s world is, for him, disgusting; a woman in a man’s world may still be a woman. He shuts the practice space, sets terms, buys Jairaj’s surrender with the house. Jairaj drinks, becomes Ratna’s dependent; Ratna bargains with the father, uses the career, and cannot forgive herself or him. Their infant son dies: the ayah doses him with opium so the parents can dance through an important night. That death is the family’s secret engine. Lata’s success in the present is both pride and theft — they live again through her body.
The play ends not with a speech of liberation but with the old couple dancing, the title hanging over them. “Dance like a man” was never a technique note. It was a taunt that defined Jairaj’s spine and Ratna’s bargains. Time on stage is not Narayan’s straight village evening: lights and memory make Amritlal enter a room he no longer owns. For plot-answers, keep three clocks: Amritlal’s house rules; the night of the child’s death; Lata’s performance and the parents’ last dance. Do not summarise as “a play about Indian culture.” It is a play about who is allowed to be an artist in a family that already knows the national dance.
Dance Like a Man
4 Dattani — gender, art, exam use
The play’s thought is double. Jairaj is punished for not being a “man”: no business, no cricket-field masculinity, a body trained to abhinaya. Ratna is punished for being too much an artist: the dead son is hung around her neck as the price of the stage. Amritlal can love the idea of independent India and still police the son’s hips. Dattani’s English is the language of the living-room, the rehearsal, the cruel joke — city speech, not Markandaya’s furrow. Viswas provides the comic outsider who thinks dance is a hobby until the house educates him.
Pairings on this paper: with Deshpande, the home as the place where gender becomes injury; with Naidu, the decorative woman-dancer versus Ratna’s grim career; with Ezekiel, irony in a closed room. Postcolonial here is not indigo or tannery. It is the brown patriarch using “Indian values” and “what will people say” after the British have gone. An 8-mark “character of Amritlal” needs the dance-ban, the guru insult, and the bargain over the house. An RTC of the old couple dancing needs the title as taunt, not as praise. Do not write that the play “shows the importance of culture.” It shows culture as a weapon inside a family.
Exam traps. Rukmani not Markandaya is the “I” of the novel. Nathan is tenant, not zamindar. Ira is the daughter, Lata is Dattani’s daughter — do not mix the names. Kuti is Rukmani’s infant; Sacrabani is Ira’s son. The tannery is in the novel; Bharatanatyam is in the play. Amritlal is not alive in the present action except as memory. Coleridge’s sieve is the novel’s title-key; “dance like a man” is the play’s taunt-key.
