Exam answers

Written paper 120 marks · 3 hours. Section A: 10 × 2 marks (two from each unit; i–v MCQ, vi–x fill-in). Section B: 5 × 8 marks, about 200 words. Two of the five are reference to context from starred Unit 2 lyrics. Section C: any 3 of 5, 20 marks, about 500 words. Model answers below are in exam prose — English first, then Hindi.

Unit 1 · History and movements

1. Define Indian Writing in English as Naik uses the term.2 marks

According to M. K. Naik, Indian English literature is literature written originally in English by authors who are Indian by birth, ancestry or nationality. The usual classroom name for this body is Indian Writing in English (IWE), after K. R. Srinivasa Iyengar. It is Indian literature that chose English as its language of composition, not British literature that merely describes India. A translation such as Dutt’s English Nil Darpan or Manto’s “The Assignment” is Indian writing through English; it is not IWE in Naik’s strict sense.

कक्षा का नाम Indian Writing in English (IWE) है।

2. Distinguish Anglo-Indian writing from IWE. Where does Ruskin Bond sit?2 marks

Anglo-Indian writing, in Naik, is the literature of Englishmen and other Westerners in India or about India — Kipling, Forster’s A Passage to India, Paul Scott. The writer’s passport is British or European; India is the scene. IWE, by contrast, is originally English work by Indian writers. In ordinary speech “Anglo-Indian” also names the Eurasian community. Ruskin Bond belongs to that community by ancestry, lives in India, and writes in English, so he belongs with IWE, not with Kipling.

3. What does the syllabus word “Indo-Anglican” mean?2 marks

The syllabus prints Indo-Anglican. Strictly, “Anglican” means the Church of England. The scholarly spelling is Indo-Anglian (Gokak; Iyengar): Indians writing originally in English — the same field as IWE, only an older name. In an answer one may keep the syllabus word and add that it is not church writing. Older critics sometimes used Indo-English for translations; Naik keeps that shelf separate from IWE.

4. Name the first substantial Indian English poet, the first Indian novel in English, and Ezekiel’s 1952 book.2 marks

The verse start is Henry Louis Vivian Derozio (1809–1831), Eurasian teacher at Hindu College, Poems (1827). The first Indian novel in English is Bankim Chandra Chatterjee’s Rajmohan’s Wife (serialised 1864). The book that dates poetry after 1950 is Nissim Ezekiel’s A Time to Change (1952). Around these names stand Hindu College (1817) and Macaulay’s Minute (1835). Sake Dean Mahomed’s The Travels of Dean Mahomet (1794) is often called the first English book by an Indian, but classroom verse still begins with Derozio.

1950 के बाद की कविता की तिथि Nissim Ezekiel की A Time to Change (1952) है। The Travels of Dean Mahomet

5. What is the Bengal Renaissance, and why is it studied on an IWE course?2 marks

The Bengal Renaissance is the nineteenth-century awakening in religion, society, education and letters centred on Calcutta — Hindu College, the Brahmo Samaj, Rammohan Roy, Vidyasagar, Derozio’s Young Bengal, Madhusudan, Bankim and Tagore. It is not the Italian Renaissance copied onto the Hooghly. IWE’s first poets grow in that climate, and Nil Darpan (1860; Dutt’s English 1861) is its protest theatre. Sumit Sarkar cautions that the movement was largely Hindu, male, Calcutta-centred and shaped by colonial rule, not a rebirth of the whole people. The Renaissance is the climate of IWE, not another name for IWE itself.

6. Write a note on the origin and four phases of Indian Writing in English.8 marks · about 200 words

The origin of IWE is a climate, not a single birthday. English education in Bengal — Hindu College (1817) and Macaulay’s Minute (1835) — created a bilingual intelligentsia. Romantic models came from the British classroom; Indian matter, myth, nation and reform, looked for a form. Derozio’s Poems (1827) is the start of verse: an Eurasian teacher, Byronic diction, patriotic feeling in “The Harp of India” and “To India — My Native Land.” Kashiprasad Ghose and Madhusudan’s English The Captive Ladie (1849) follow. Bankim’s Rajmohan’s Wife (1864) is the first Indian novel in English; his later fame moves into Bengali. Krishna Mohan Banerjee’s The Persecuted (1831) is often listed as the first Indian play in English. Naik’s test still governs this origin: originally English, Indian writer. Kipling’s India is Anglo-Indian literature, not this beginning.

Four phases map the growth. From the beginnings to 1857 the work is imitation and first experiment — Derozio, Madhusudan’s English verse, the first play. From 1857 to about 1920 comes the literary renaissance: Toru Dutt, Romesh Chunder Dutt, Manmohan Ghose, Sri Aurobindo, Sarojini Naidu, and Tagore’s English Gitanjali (1912; Nobel Prize 1913). English now carries myth and lyric fame; Gokak’s treasury is built from this shelf. From 1920 to 1947, the Gandhian years, politics enters fiction as a climate. The “big three” of the novel appear in the 1930s: Anand (Untouchable, 1935), Narayan (Swami and Friends, 1935), Raja Rao (Kanthapura, 1938). After Independence, Ezekiel modernises poetry in 1952; Markandaya’s Nectar in a Sieve (1954) is the rural novel; Dattani gives English an urban stage; Kalam writes twenty-first-century public prose.

Two forces run through every phase. Classical Indian tradition supplies epic episode, bhakti and the village tale — Toru’s “Lakshman,” Raja Rao’s purana, Kolatkar’s pilgrimage. Western colonisation supplies the language, print, Romantic then modernist form, and the wound of rule. IWE is their meeting. Mukherjee’s phrase “twice-born fiction” names that double birth for the novel: an Indian tale inside English. The short history therefore ends where it began: originally English, Indian writer, Indian matter in a language the writer was not born singing.

Derozio की Poems (1827) पद्य की शुरुआत है: यूरेशियन अध्यापक, बायरनिक शब्द, “The Harp of India” और “To India — My Native Land” में देशभक्त भाव।

7. Distinguish early Indian English poetry from poetry after 1950, with the prescribed names.8 marks · about 200 words

Early Indian English poetry means the line from Derozio to Naidu, and Aurobindo, before the break of the 1950s. Gokak’s Golden Treasury of Indo-Anglian Poetry is the classroom book. The verse learns English Romantic and Victorian music: stanza, personification, a silent harp, the nation addressed as a mother. The subject is already Indian — lost glory, Puranic story, festival, the woman’s decorative and labouring life. Derozio, son of an English mother and an Indo-Portuguese father, taught at Hindu College and died at twenty-two. Toru Dutt (1856–1877) is the first poet whose English still lives as literature: Ancient Ballads (1882) recasts epic episode, and “Lakshman” is the set ballad. Sarojini Naidu, the “Nightingale of India,” turns folk scene into song in “The Bangle Sellers” and “Palanquin Bearers.” Later poets named the danger: the song can freeze into “picturesque India” for a London reader. Tagore’s English Gitanjali is a self-translation, not original IWE in Naik’s strict sense, yet 1913 remains a date in the story of Indian lyric in English.

Poetry after 1950 revolts against that song. The new poets wanted the Indian city, irony, a spoken sentence, and an English that admitted Indian life without bazaar-costume. Bruce King’s Three Indian Poets takes Ezekiel, Ramanujan and Moraes as the type. Ezekiel’s A Time to Change (1952) is the date to remember; “Night of the Scorpion,” from The Unfinished Man (1960), is the set proof — sceptic husband, believing women, a child’s memory, no harp. Kolatkar’s Jejuri (1976) opens with “The Bus”: camera eye, tarpaulin, a divided face in spectacles, arrival without communion. Meena Alexander’s “Her Garden” (House of a Thousand Doors, 1988) is private and diasporic, a grandmother never met. Mamang Dai’s “The Sorrow of Women” writes Arunachal land and war as a woman’s waiting.

The distinction is a change of music, not a change of passport. Early verse is public scene, rhyme and decorative song. After 1950 the line is spoken sentence, city or hill, irony or memory. Dutt and Naidu belong to the first shelf; Ezekiel, Kolatkar, Alexander and Dai belong to the second. The hinge year is 1952. Kipling is the origin of neither shelf.

Gokak का Golden Treasury of Indo-Anglian Poetry कक्षा-पुस्तक है।

Bruce King की Three Indian Poets Ezekiel, Ramanujan और Moraes को नमूना मानती है। Ezekiel की A Time to Change (1952) याद रखने की तिथि है; “Night of the Scorpion,” The Unfinished Man (1960) से, निर्धारित प्रमाण है — संशयवादी पति, विश्वास करती स्त्रियाँ, बच्चे की स्मृति, कोई वीणा नहीं। Meena Alexander का “Her Garden” (House of a Thousand Doors, 1988) निजी और प्रवासी है, न मिली दादी।

8. Write an essay on Indo-Anglian writing, Anglo-Indian writing and Indian Writing in English — origin, development, prominent authors, and the movements named in the syllabus.20 marks · about 500 words

Three labels must be kept apart before any story of growth. In M. K. Naik’s A History of Indian English Literature (Sahitya Akademi, 1982), Indian Writing in English is literature written originally in English by authors Indian by birth, ancestry or nationality. Iyengar gave the classroom name. Indo-Anglian (Gokak; Iyengar’s earlier usage) is the same field, an older name. The syllabus prints Indo-Anglican: the syllabus word may be kept, with the note that “Anglican” is the Church of England and the scholarly spelling is Indo-Anglian. Anglo-Indian writing is Kipling, Forster and Scott — Western passports, India as scene. Ruskin Bond is Eurasian by ancestry and IWE by Indian life and language of composition. Dutt’s English Nil Darpan and Manto’s Urdu tale in English dress are Indian writing through English; they are not the definition of IWE. Mehrotra (2008) and Sisir Kumar Das (1991) keep the same shelves. Mixing Kipling into IWE confuses the first distinction the course asks for.

Origin is a climate: Hindu College (1817), English print, Macaulay’s Minute (1835), a bilingual gentry in Bengal, Romantic models, Indian matter looking for a form. Derozio (1809–1831), English mother and Indo-Portuguese father, Poems (1827), is the verse start. Bankim’s Rajmohan’s Wife (1864) is the first Indian novel in English. Banerjee’s The Persecuted (1831) is often the first play. Dean Mahomed (1794) may be named as the first English book by an Indian; the classroom map still begins with the college and Derozio. Development walks four phases. Beginnings to 1857: imitation. 1857 to about 1920: literary renaissance — Toru Dutt, Naidu, Aurobindo, Tagore’s English Gitanjali (Nobel 1913). 1920 to 1947: Gandhian climate and the 1930s “big three,” Anand, Narayan, Raja Rao. After 1947: Ezekiel’s modernism (1952), the widened novel, Dattani’s city stage, Kalam’s civic prose. Mukherjee’s The Twice Born Fiction (1971) names the novel’s double birth: Indian tale inside English.

Prominent authors are best given as a map of genres. Poetry is the oldest continuous line: Derozio’s harp; Toru’s ballads (“Lakshman”); Naidu’s bazaar songs; then Ezekiel, Ramanujan, Das, Kolatkar’s Jejuri, Alexander’s “Her Garden,” Dai’s Arunachal lyric. Fiction runs from Anand’s protest and Narayan’s Malgudi through Raja Rao’s oral English, Markandaya’s furrow, Deshpande’s inner room and Ao’s Nagaland; Rushdie after 1981 is a development date, not a set text. Drama is thinner for a long time; the prescribed English playwright is Dattani (Dance Like a Man, 1989). Prose runs from Rammohan’s pamphlets through Vivekananda, Gandhi, Nehru and Nirad Chaudhuri to Kalam’s Ignited Minds, chapter 5.

Early Indian English poetry learns Victorian-Romantic music and already Indian subject: Derozio, Toru, Naidu. Poetry after 1950 refuses that music for spoken sentence, city and irony; King’s three poets; Ezekiel 1952 as the hinge. The Bengal Renaissance is the Calcutta climate in which IWE, modern Bengali and reform grow together — Roy, Vidyasagar, Young Bengal, Madhusudan, Bankim, Nil Darpan, Tagore — not a synonym for IWE. Sarkar (2010) adds that the movement was Hindu, male, Calcutta-centred and colonial. Contemporary trends after Rushdie (1981) are many Englishes: the global novel, diaspora (Alexander), the woman’s inner room (Deshpande), the Northeast (Ao, Dai), city theatre (Dattani), and a translation industry that must sit beside Naik’s definition, as indigo in Unit 5 already shows.

Two forces named in the course outcomes close the essay. Classical Indian tradition supplies myth, epic, village tale, dance and the woman’s house. Western colonisation supplies English, the printed book and the wound. IWE is their meeting. Tagore’s Gitanjali is self-translation, yet 1913 is a date. Manto and Mitra are the course’s other door, not the definition. The prescribed proofs are already chosen: Toru, Naidu, Ezekiel, Kolatkar, Alexander, Dai; Narayan, Bond, Deshpande, Ao; Markandaya, Dattani; Nil Darpan; Kalam. Indo-Anglian, Anglo-Indian and IWE remain three names, not one literature.

A History of Indian English Literature (1982) में Indian Writing in English वह साहित्य है जो अंग्रेज़ी में मूल रूप से उन लेखकों ने लिखा जो जन्म, वंश या राष्ट्रीयता से भारतीय हैं।

नाटक लंबे समय पतला है; निर्धारित अंग्रेज़ी नाटककार Dattani हैं (Dance Like a Man, 1989)।

Unit 2 · Poetry

1. What form is “Lakshman”? Name the two speakers and the one demand that the poem turns on.2 marks

Toru Dutt’s “Lakshman,” from Ancient Ballads and Legends of Hindustan (1882), is a ballad in quatrains. The two speakers are Sita and Lakshman. The demand that the poem turns on is Sita’s order that Lakshman leave her and go to Rama after the false cry “O haste, Lakshman, haste.” The golden deer, Maricha, and the drawn circle belong to the Ramayana story behind the lyric; they are not named at length in the printed lines. The set opening is “Hark! Lakshman! Hark, again that cry!”

Toru Dutt का “Lakshman,” Ancient Ballads and Legends of Hindustan (1882) से, चौपाइयों में बैलेड है। Lakshman! Hark, again that cry!”

2. In “The Bangle Sellers,” which three ages of woman does the bazaar serve, and what colours belong to stanza 2?2 marks

Sarojini Naidu’s “The Bangle Sellers” (from The Bird of Time, 1912) is a bazaar song. Three ages of woman buy: the unmarried girl, the bride, and the middle-aged housewife who has “journeyed through life midway.” Stanza 2 is the maiden’s shelf: silver and blue like mountain mist; buds that grow by woodland streams; new-born leaves. Rainbow tint, bridal blush, flame-coloured marriage bangles, and purple and gold for “fruitful pride” belong to later stanzas, not stanza 2. The poem is not “Palanquin Bearers,” which has no three-age scheme.

Sarojini Naidu का “The Bangle Sellers” (The Bird of Time, 1912) बाज़ार-गीत है।

3. From which book is “Night of the Scorpion”? How does the poem end?2 marks

Nissim Ezekiel’s “Night of the Scorpion” is from The Unfinished Man (1960), not The Exact Name (1965). After peasants, rites, the sceptic father and the mother’s twenty hours of pain, the last speech is the mother’s: “Thank God the scorpion picked on me / And spared my children.” The poem is memory in the child’s voice, not a hymn to village faith, and not Derozio’s harp-poem.

Nissim Ezekiel का “Night of the Scorpion” The Unfinished Man (1960) से है, The Exact Name (1965) से नहीं। किसानों, रीतियों, संशयवादी पिता और माँ के बीस घंटे दर्द के बाद अंतिम वाक्य माँ का है: “Thank God the scorpion picked on me / And spared my children.”

4. What happens in the first lyric of Kolatkar’s Jejuri?2 marks

Arun Kolatkar’s “The Bus” opens Jejuri (1976). A state-transport bus, tarpaulin at the windows, runs toward the pilgrimage town. A co-passenger’s spectacles split a face; at the end the traveller is asked whether he has a light. Arrival is physical, not spiritual. The poem is camera-eye, not Naidu’s bazaar-song.

Arun Kolatkar का “The Bus” Jejuri (1976) खोलता है।

5. Explain with reference to context: “Hark! Lakshman! Hark, again that cry! / It is, — it is thy brother’s voice!”8 marks · RTC · about 200 words

Reference. These are the opening lines of Toru Dutt’s ballad “Lakshman,” collected in Ancient Ballads and Legends of Hindustan (1882). The speaker is Sita, addressing Lakshman in the forest hermitage. The form is a ballad in quatrains. Dutt recasts an episode of the Ramayana in Victorian English; the poem is original IWE, not a line-by-line translation of Valmiki.

Context. Rama has gone after the golden deer. Maricha, dying, imitates Rama’s cry for help. Sita hears “O haste, Lakshman, haste.” Lakshman knows the forest’s tricks and will not leave the woman he was charged to guard. Sita then wounds him with the charge of desire for the widowed queen. The printed lyric is this quarrel. The deer, the demon and the drawn circle belong to the epic behind the scene; they are not named at length in the lines. The poem is not Naidu’s bazaar and not Ezekiel’s scorpion-night.

Explanation. The doubled “Hark” and the broken “It is, — it is” are panic made audible. Sita’s certainty that the voice is Rama’s is the engine of the ballad: she will not be comforted, and Lakshman’s duty will be rewritten as betrayal. The later stanzas answer with Lakshman’s patience and then with his going, once the insult is spoken. Dutt thus writes a woman’s fear and a younger brother’s honour in English that still sings. The extract is the start of that argument, not the whole Ramayana.

Ancient Ballads and Legends of Hindustan (1882) में संगृहीत।

दुहरा “Hark” और टूटा “It is, — it is” सुनने योग्य घबराहट है।

6. Explain with reference to context: “Thank God the scorpion picked on me / And spared my children.”8 marks · RTC · about 200 words

Reference. These are the last lines of Nissim Ezekiel’s “Night of the Scorpion,” from The Unfinished Man (1960). The speaker of the lyric is the remembering child; the quoted speech is the mother’s, after the sting. The poem is free verse in a spoken register, the type of poetry after 1950.

Context. A scorpion, driven in by rain, has stung the mother. Peasants crowd with lanterns, name the insect the Evil One, and hope that every movement of the poisoner will burn a sin of the woman’s previous birth. The sceptic father tries powder, paraffin, a holy man. After twenty hours the pain loses its sting. Only then does the mother speak the two lines. The book is not The Exact Name (1965). The lyric is not Derozio and not Naidu.

Explanation. The peasants’ theology and the father’s reason have both been heard; neither gets the last word. The mother’s sentence is love, not doctrine: she thanks God that the poison chose her body and not the children’s. Ezekiel’s irony stays to the end — “Thank God” is piety, yet the feeling is maternal, not ritual. Poetry after 1950 here is memory, city-educated voice, and an Indian night told without a harp. The extract is the close of that night, not a hymn to the village.

ये Nissim Ezekiel के “Night of the Scorpion” की अंतिम पंक्तियाँ हैं, The Unfinished Man (1960) से।

पुस्तक The Exact Name (1965) नहीं।

7. Write a critical note on Mamang Dai’s “The Sorrow of Women,” pairing it with another prescribed lyric of a woman’s voice.8 marks · about 200 words

Mamang Dai’s “The Sorrow of Women” is a short lyric of Arunachal. The land is named as river, hill and rain; war and hunting belong to men; the woman’s portion is waiting, loss, and a sorrow that does not become a public speech. Dai writes as an Adi poet of the Northeast. The English is spare. There is no bazaar, no scorpion-crowd, no pilgrimage bus. The feeling is collective — “women” — yet the voice is intimate, almost a proverb. The poem belongs to poetry after 1950 because it refuses Naidu’s decorative song and Derozio’s harp; it also belongs to the contemporary map of many Indian Englishes, the hill beside the city.

Meena Alexander’s “Her Garden,” from House of a Thousand Doors (1988), is the natural pair among the set lyrics. Alexander writes a grandmother never met, a house of doors, a garden that is inheritance and absence. The sorrow is diasporic and private, not tribal-collective, yet both poems give the woman a voice that is not the bazaar-seller’s and not Sita’s epic cry. Dutt’s Sita fears for Rama; Naidu’s women buy colour for marriage and age; Ezekiel’s mother speaks one sentence of love after pain. Dai’s women sorrow as a condition of land and war. Alexander’s speaker sorrows as a condition of memory and distance. Together they show that the prescribed woman’s lyric is not one costume.

A short judgement follows. Dai should not be read as a footnote to Ezekiel, nor as a second Naidu of the hills. The prescribed proof is the waiting itself. Paired with Alexander, “The Sorrow of Women” shows two modern ways of writing woman in English: the Northeast’s land-sorrow and the diaspora’s garden of the dead. Both are IWE in Naik’s sense — originally English, Indian writer — and both stand after 1950.

Mamang Dai का “The Sorrow of Women” अरुणाचल का छोटा गीत है।

Meena Alexander का “Her Garden,” House of a Thousand Doors (1988) से, निर्धारित गीतों में स्वाभाविक जोड़ी है।

8. Trace the change of voice from Dutt and Naidu to Ezekiel, Kolatkar, Alexander and Dai.20 marks · about 500 words

The six prescribed lyrics are a history of voice. Early Indian English poetry learns English Romantic and Victorian music and already sings Indian matter. Poetry after 1950 keeps the Indian matter and changes the music. Derozio’s harp is the origin named in Unit 1; the set proof of the early shelf is Toru Dutt and Sarojini Naidu. The set proof of the later shelf is Nissim Ezekiel, Arun Kolatkar, Meena Alexander and Mamang Dai. Bruce King’s Three Indian Poets and Gokak’s treasury name the two rooms. The hinge year is 1952, Ezekiel’s A Time to Change.

Toru Dutt’s “Lakshman” (Ancient Ballads, 1882) is a ballad in quatrains. Sita and Lakshman speak; the demand is that the brother leave the hut after the false cry. Dutt recasts the Ramayana in English that still uses “Hark” and “thy.” The voice is public, epic, and a woman’s fear inside a brother’s honour. Naidu’s “The Bangle Sellers” and “Palanquin Bearers” are songs. The first is a bazaar: three ages of woman, colour as destiny, stanza 2 silver and blue, woodland buds, new-born leaves. The second is labour made graceful: “Softly, O softly we bear her along,” a bride as pearl and star. Naidu is the Nightingale; the danger later poets named is that India becomes costume. Both poets are IWE in Naik’s sense. Neither is Kipling.

Ezekiel’s “Night of the Scorpion” (The Unfinished Man, 1960) answers that costume. Rain, a peasant crowd, a sceptic father, a mother who at last thanks God that the sting spared the children: the voice is a child’s memory, ironic and tender together. There is no harp. Kolatkar’s “The Bus” opens Jejuri (1976) with tarpaulin, spectacles that split a face, and a request for a light. Pilgrimage is a state-transport ride; the camera does not kneel. These two lyrics are the revolt King describes: spoken sentence, city or dusty road, English that admits Indian life without bazaar-jewellery.

Alexander and Dai widen the later shelf beyond Bombay irony. “Her Garden” (House of a Thousand Doors, 1988) is a grandmother never met, a house of doors, inheritance as absence; the voice is diasporic and private. Dai’s “The Sorrow of Women” gives Arunachal land, war, and a woman’s waiting; the voice is collective yet spare. They are not a fifth and sixth Ezekiel. They show that after 1950 the woman’s lyric need not be Naidu’s seller or Dutt’s Sita. The Northeast and the diaspora are contemporary trends already met in Unit 1, now proved in verse.

The change of voice is therefore a change of music, not of passport. Early verse: rhyme, personification, public scene, decorative song. Later verse: free or spoken line, irony or memory, city, hill, bus, inner house. All six names remain originally English, Indian writers. Tagore’s English Gitanjali may be dated 1912–13 as self-translation beside them; it is not a seventh set lyric. The last sound may be the mother’s thanks or the bus asking for a light: after 1950 the Indian poem in English need not sing “picturesque India” in order to be Indian.

धुरी-वर्ष 1952 है, Ezekiel की A Time to Change।

Naidu के “The Bangle Sellers” और “Palanquin Bearers” गीत हैं। दूसरा श्रम को सुंदर बनाता है: “Softly, O softly we bear her along,” मोती और तारे के रूप में दुल्हन।

Ezekiel का “Night of the Scorpion” (The Unfinished Man, 1960) उस पोशाक का उत्तर है।

“Her Garden” (House of a Thousand Doors, 1988) न मिली दादी है, दरवाज़ों का घर, अनुपस्थिति के रूप में विरासत; स्वर प्रवासी और निजी है।

Unit 3 · Short stories

1. In Narayan’s “Under the Banyan Tree,” why does Nambi go silent?2 marks

In R. K. Narayan’s “Under the Banyan Tree,” Nambi is the storyteller of the village of Somal. He lives in the temple porch and, on moonlit nights, sits under the banyan and unrolls tales of kings and lovers until midnight. When the gift leaves him, he tells the crowd that the goddess who gave the stories has taken them back. After that he hardly speaks. Silence is the artist’s last act, not a new plot-twist tale. The story is not “A Horse and Two Goats.”

R. K. Narayan के “Under the Banyan Tree” में Nambi सोमल गाँव के कथावाचक हैं। कहानी “A Horse and Two Goats” नहीं है।

2. Who are the two “assignments” in Manto’s story, and what food is cooked in the house?2 marks

Saadat Hasan Manto’s “The Assignment” is the English title of his Amritsar Partition tale. Retired judge Mian Abdul Hai will not leave his street. At Id, Santokh Singh (not Santosh) brings homemade seviyan (sweet vermicelli), the yearly gift his dead father Gurmukh Singh charged him to continue: that is the first assignment. At the corner, masked men ask whether he has completed his assignment; he nods, and they may proceed against the house: that is the second. Sughra is the judge’s daughter. The story is Urdu in origin: Indian writing through English, not originally-English IWE.

3. Why is Bond’s “The Night Train at Deoli” an unfinished meeting?2 marks

Ruskin Bond’s narrator, a college boy on the night train, sees a basket-seller at Deoli, a small station. He speaks to her once; he looks for her again; she is not on the platform. The story refuses a finished romance. Bond is Eurasian by ancestry and IWE by Indian life and English composition, not Kipling’s Anglo-Indian shelf.

4. What is “intruded upon” in Deshpande’s “The Intrusion”?2 marks

Shashi Deshpande’s “The Intrusion” is a first-person wedding-night story. The new husband forces sex; the title’s intrusion is into her person, inside marriage, where the law sees no crime. Morning tea is the second violence. The climate is the woman’s house, not Ao’s Nagaland and not Narayan’s banyan.

5. In Temsula Ao’s “The Letter,” what is the dead man’s letter about?2 marks

In Temsula Ao’s “The Letter,” prescribed from Laburnum for My Head (2009), a Naga underground collector comes alone for “emergency tax” and is killed. In his pocket is a letter: a son asking for school examination fees, not a manifesto. Long Legs, a tall villager, must read it. Earlier in the same cycle a beaten householder had pleaded to keep money for his son’s fees. The underground are not Naxals. The story is not the book’s title-tale of a laburnum grave. The climate is grey: both sides press the same poor house.

Temsula Ao के “The Letter” में, निर्धारित Laburnum for My Head (2009) से, भूमिगत का एक नागा संग्रहकर्ता अकेला “आपातकालीन कर” को आता है और मारा जाता है।

6. Critically appreciate Manto’s “The Assignment” as a Partition story.8 marks · about 200 words

Saadat Hasan Manto’s “The Assignment” is the English title by which the Amritsar Partition tale is prescribed. Retired Muslim judge Mian Abdul Hai will not leave his Hindu-majority street though fires have begun. His daughter Sughra, seventeen, watches from the roof; his son Basharat is eleven. The judge has a stroke; it is Ramadan, almost Id; he still says God is merciful. A knock comes. It is not old Gurmukh Singh, the villager the judge once acquitted, who for ten years brought homemade seviyan at Id. Gurmukh is dead. His son Santokh Singh (not Santosh) brings the bag because the dying charge was that the yearly gift must not stop. Sughra takes the sweets and cannot even ask him to fetch a doctor. Santokh walks to the corner. Four men with turbans over their faces, torches and kerosene, ask whether he has completed his assignment. He nods. They ask whether they should proceed with theirs. “If you like,” he says, and goes. The kindness was the first assignment; the house is the second.

The tale is Urdu in origin. In the prescribed English it is Indian writing through English, a translation-door like Dutt’s Nil Darpan, not originally-English IWE in Naik’s sense. That fact belongs in the criticism. Manto’s art is dryness: names, food, a door opened a little, two spoken lines. Everyone follows a rule. The judge follows the rule that life will return to normal. The daughter follows piety and does not force him out. Santokh follows a father’s wish and the mob’s timetable. Trust and betrayal are the same evening. The explosion is implied, not staged. The title is not school homework; the food is not noodles.

Read beside Narayan’s public banyan and Bond’s unfinished station, Manto is the story in which neighbour-feeling is still named and already sold. The story is taught as Partition writing not because it lists massacres, but because a Muslim house still opens to a Sikh gift, and the reader knows the year is 1947.

7. Critically appreciate Deshpande’s “The Intrusion” as a story of the inner room.8 marks · about 200 words

Shashi Deshpande’s “The Intrusion” is a first-person wedding-night story. The narrator is a new wife in an arranged match. She barely knows the man. Relatives have joked and left; the house is now his. She wants talk, delay, a self that is not immediately a body for use. He comes in as husband — legally entitled, socially congratulated — and forces sex. The title is exact: the intrusion is into her person, inside marriage, where the law and the family see no crime. There is no banyan-crowd, no night train, no underground tax. The climate is the woman’s house after the wedding.

After the act she lies awake. Morning is tea, ordinary speech, the world that calls this consummation. That calm is the second violence: the culture has a name for rape outside marriage and almost no name for it inside. Deshpande’s English is quiet and unsentimental. The shock is not vocabulary; it is that the narrator can describe the act and still not be heard. Beside Narayan’s public oral theatre this is a closed room. Beside Ao’s hill-war this is private harm. Both belong together because IWE after the 1970s widened who may speak.

The story’s judgement is in the title. What the law calls consummation the woman experiences as trespass. The prescribed proof is the unheard wife. That places Deshpande among the later fiction writers of the map, with Mukherjee’s twice-born novel in the background: an Indian inner life told in English.

8. The five short stories present five climates of Indian life. Discuss.20 marks · about 500 words

Unit 3 is not one India. Five stories give five climates. Narayan, Bond, Deshpande and Ao write originally in English; they are IWE in Naik’s sense. Manto’s tale is Urdu wearing an English title. Translation and original English therefore sit on the same paper, as they will again with Nil Darpan in Unit 5. Mukherjee’s twice-born novel is the background book: Indian lives inside English, more than one centre.

Narayan’s “Under the Banyan Tree” is the village of Somal. Nambi the storyteller lives in the temple porch and, on moonlit nights, takes his seat under the banyan. The crowd comes uncalled. He stares, waits, then unrolls kings and lovers until midnight. When the gift snags, he tells them the goddess has taken the tales back, and thereafter he hardly speaks. The climate is oral South India: a man, a tree, a public art that can leave. Bond’s “The Night Train at Deoli” is a small halt on the way to Dehra: a college boy, a girl with baskets, a little speech, no second meeting, no search of the town. The climate is unfinished desire. Bond’s Eurasian ancestry does not move him to Kipling’s Anglo-Indian shelf; he lives the Indian platform in English.

Manto’s “The Assignment” is Amritsar at Partition. Judge Mian Abdul Hai will not leave; Sughra watches fires; Santokh Singh brings Id seviyan as his dead father charged, then nods to the masked men so they may proceed against the house. Two assignments, one evening of trust and betrayal. Because the tale is translated, it is Indian writing through English, not a proof of Naik’s definition; it is still the Partition climate of the unit. Deshpande’s “The Intrusion” turns the map indoors. A wedding-night wife is forced; morning tea names the act consummation. The climate is the inner room, marriage as law without a listened yes.

Ao’s “The Letter,” prescribed from Laburnum for My Head (2009), is Nagaland as a war zone, not the book’s title-tale of a laburnum grave. A lone underground collector is killed; the pocket holds a son’s examination-fee plea. Long Legs must read it. Earlier a beaten villager had begged to keep money for his own son’s fees. The underground are not Naxals. The climate is grey: both sides press the same poor house, and the letter makes the gunman a father. Dai’s lyric in Unit 2 is the verse neighbour of this hill. Together they are the Northeast as a contemporary trend, not an exotic extra.

The five climates are therefore oral village, platform-halt, Partition-house, inner-room, and hill-war. Speech fails differently in each: a goddess who takes stories back in Narayan, one unfinished greeting in Bond, a gift that licenses a fire in Manto, an unheard body in Deshpande, a dead letter in Ao. Classical village tale, colonial railway, 1947, the woman’s house, and insurgency all meet English. Nambi’s silence, Santokh’s nod, the empty Deoli platform, the wedding-night room, and the exam-fee letter are the scenes that prove the map. That meeting of five climates is the unit. The map is the answer.

Narayan का “Under the Banyan Tree” सोमल गाँव है।

Ao का “The Letter,” निर्धारित Laburnum for My Head (2009) से, युद्ध-क्षेत्र के रूप में नागालैंड है, पुस्तक की शीर्षक-कथा अमलतास-कब्र नहीं।

Unit 4 · Novel and drama

1. Who narrates Nectar in a Sieve? Who is the tenant?2 marks

Rukmani narrates in the first person, looking back. Nathan, her husband, is a tenant farmer without land of his own, not a zamindar. Dr Kennington — Kenny — is the white doctor who comes and goes. Ira is Rukmani’s daughter; Lata is Dattani’s daughter in the other set text. Selvam remains with Kenny’s work; Murugan is the son lost in the city.

2. Explain the title Nectar in a Sieve. Distinguish Kuti from Sacrabani.2 marks

The title quotes Coleridge: work without hope draws nectar in a sieve — sweetness that will not hold. Rukmani’s hope leaks: crop, children, husband, hut. Kuti is Rukmani’s last infant, who dies of hunger. Ira, married and sent back as barren, sells her body in the famine so the household may eat; she later bears Sacrabani, an albino boy. Raja is beaten to death when he is caught stealing at the tannery — hunger, not a battle at the gates.

3. What does “dance like a man” mean in Dattani’s play? Is Amritlal alive in the present action?2 marks

In Mahesh Dattani’s Dance Like a Man (first staged 1989), “dance like a man” is Amritlal Patel’s taunt, not a technique note. For him a son in Bharatanatyam is a joke or a disgust. The play moves between a 1990s Bangalore present and memory of the 1940s–70s. Amritlal is dead in the present and fiercely alive in memory. Jairaj and Ratna are the old dancer-couple; Lata their daughter; Viswas her fiancé. Their infant son dies when the ayah doses him with opium so the parents can dance an important night.

Mahesh Dattani के Dance Like a Man (पहला मंच 1989) में “पुरुष की तरह नाचो” अमृतलाल पटेल का ताना है, तकनीक-टिप्पणी नहीं।

4. Write a note on the themes of Nectar in a Sieve.8 marks · about 200 words

Kamala Markandaya’s Nectar in a Sieve (1954) is the peasant woman’s chronicle. Rukmani narrates looking back. Married very young to Nathan, a tenant without land of his own, she learns to write and bears Ira and then sons: Arjun, Thambi, Murugan, Raja, Selvam, and last Kuti. A tannery arrives with cash, smell and a road. Arjun and Thambi work there, then leave for the tea estates after labour trouble. Raja is beaten to death when caught stealing in hunger. Ira, sent back as barren, returns; in the famine she sells her body so the household — and Kuti — may eat; Kuti dies anyway; Ira later bears Sacrabani. Drought and monsoon ruin the rice; zamindar and tannery take the ground. Old, they walk to the city for Murugan, break stones, befriend Puli; Nathan dies on the journey home; Rukmani returns with Puli and Selvam. The farm is not restored as a pastoral. Mukherjee’s twice-born novel is this: an English book whose pulse is tenancy, monsoon, and a woman’s remembered speech.

The title quotes Coleridge: work without hope draws nectar in a sieve. Hope leaks. Land and tenancy: Nathan never owns; rain and the tannery both evict. Industry: wages and the son’s corpse. Hunger: Kuti’s death, Ira’s bargain, stone-breaking. Gender: a girl’s barrenness as a returned wife; a mother’s body as the last store. East and West: Kenny’s colonial medicine helps and scolds and does not stay; he cannot understand why they will not simply leave the land. Kunthi uses knowledge as a whip. Puli is the city’s orphan cleverness that the village adopts.

English here tells a ryot’s hunger without making the tannery a cartoon machine or the village a golden past. The book is rural, but Gandhi is not its engine; Raja Rao’s Kanthapura is the Gandhian climate elsewhere. Markandaya’s engine is the woman’s remembering voice and the failed holding of nectar.

Kamala Markandaya का Nectar in a Sieve (1954) किसान-स्त्री का वृत्तांत है।

5. Write a note on gender and art in Dance Like a Man.8 marks · about 200 words

Mahesh Dattani’s Dance Like a Man (staged 1989; collected in Collected Plays) is a two-act play that moves between the 1990s present and the 1940s–70s past in a Bangalore house. Jairaj and Ratna, once a pair of Bharatanatyam dancers, are old. Their daughter Lata is the dancer they were not allowed to finish becoming. Viswas, Lata’s fiancé, must hear the family history. Amritlal Patel, Jairaj’s father, is dead in the present and fiercely alive in memory: a reformist public man who will fund a nation and will not fund a son who dances. Three clocks hold the plot: Amritlal’s house rules; the night of the child’s death; Lata’s performance and the parents’ last dance.

Amritlal’s rule is gender as law. Dance is for women, or for the “wrong” men; he sneers at the guru’s femininity. He shuts the practice space and buys Jairaj’s surrender with the house. Jairaj drinks and becomes Ratna’s dependent; Ratna bargains with the father, uses the career, and cannot forgive herself or him. The ayah doses the infant with opium so the parents can dance through an important night; that death is the family’s secret engine. Lata’s success is pride and theft — they live again through her body. The play ends not with a speech of liberation but with the old couple dancing, the title hanging over them as taunt, not praise.

Jairaj is punished for not being a “man”: no cricket-field masculinity, a body trained to abhinaya. Ratna is punished for being too much an artist: the dead son hung around her neck. Amritlal can love independent India and still police the son’s hips. Dattani’s English is living-room and rehearsal, not Markandaya’s furrow. Beside Deshpande, the home is where gender becomes injury. After the British have gone, the brown patriarch still uses “Indian values” and “what will people say.” Culture here is a weapon inside a family, not a decoration to praise.

Mahesh Dattani का Dance Like a Man (मंच 1989; Collected Plays में संगृहीत) दो-अंक नाटक है जो 1990 के वर्तमान और 1940–70 के अतीत के बीच बंगलूर के घर में चलता है।

6. Discuss Nectar in a Sieve as a twice-born rural novel, and show how Dance Like a Man asks a different question of independent India.20 marks · about 500 words

Unit 4 sets two long texts. Kamala Markandaya’s Nectar in a Sieve (1954) is the rural novel of hunger, land and the tannery. Mahesh Dattani’s Dance Like a Man (staged 1989) is the urban play of Bharatanatyam, gender and a father’s law. Meenakshi Mukherjee’s The Twice Born Fiction (1971) names the novel’s design: an Indian tale inside English. Neither work is a lyric. The novel’s “I” is Rukmani, not Markandaya; the play’s living present does not contain Amritlal except as memory. Ira is the novel’s daughter; Lata is the play’s. Kuti is Rukmani’s infant; Sacrabani is Ira’s albino son. The tannery belongs to the novel; Bharatanatyam belongs to the play.

Rukmani looks back on a life of tenancy. Married very young to Nathan, she goes to a hut, learns to write, bears Ira and sons. The tannery brings cash, smell and a road. Arjun and Thambi work there, then leave for tea estates after labour trouble. Raja is beaten to death for stealing in hunger. Ira, returned as barren, sells her body in the famine so the household and Kuti may eat; Kuti dies anyway; Sacrabani is born later from that prostitution. Rain and the zamindar finish the eviction. In the city Murugan has vanished into service; Rukmani and Nathan break stones and befriend Puli; Nathan dies on the road home; she returns with Puli and Selvam. The land is not restored. Coleridge’s line — work without hope draws nectar in a sieve — is the book’s metaphor: crop, children, husband, hut all leak. Mukherjee’s claim is exact: English carries monsoon and a woman’s remembered speech without a golden village or a cartoon mill. Kenny’s medicine helps and does not stay. Kunthi’s blackmail belongs to the same village economy of desire. Gandhi is not the engine; the engine is the failed holding of sweetness.

Dattani asks what independent India does with a son who dances. The Bangalore house holds two times. Amritlal will fund a nation and will not fund Jairaj’s Bharatanatyam. Dance is for women, or for the “wrong” men. Jairaj drinks; Ratna bargains; an infant dies of opium so the parents can dance; Lata’s success is pride and theft. The old couple’s last dance leaves the title as taunt. English here is city speech — living-room, rehearsal, cruel joke — not the furrow. Viswas learns that dance is not a hobby. Gender is injury inside the family, as in Deshpande’s room. After the British have gone, the brown patriarch still uses “what will people say.”

On the larger map Markandaya is post-1947 fiction from the furrow; Dattani is the set original English dramatist after a thin IWE stage. Both use English as one of India’s languages. Neither is a nationalist ode. Land and hunger look backward to Nil Darpan (1860 indigo, protest melodrama, translation) and forward from Rukmani’s 1954 tenancy. The woman-artist looks from Naidu’s decorative dancer to Ratna’s grim career. Irony in a closed room looks toward Ezekiel.

Design closes the essay. The novel is a first-person chronicle, years leaking through a sieve, a return that is not restoration. The play is lights and memory, Amritlal entering a room he no longer owns, a title that was always a taunt. Coleridge’s sieve is the novel’s key; “dance like a man” is the play’s key. Each work does something with hope, land, gender, and the English sentence. That is the unit.

Kamala Markandaya का Nectar in a Sieve (1954) भूख, भूमि और चमड़ा-कारखाने का ग्रामीण उपन्यास है। Mahesh Dattani का Dance Like a Man (मंच 1989) भरतनाट्यम, लिंग और पिता के क़ानून का शहरी नाटक है।

Unit 5 · Translation and prose

1. Who wrote Nil Darpan, who translated it, who published the English, and what was the punishment?2 marks

Dinabandhu Mitra wrote the Bengali play in 1860. Michael Madhusudan Dutt translated it as The Indigo Planting Mirror (Calcutta, 1861; the title page says “translated from the Bengali by a Native”). The Reverend James Long published and circulated the English; he was fined Rs 1,000 and imprisoned for one month. The crop is indigo, not tea. The play is not Tagore’s, and it is not originally IWE.

Michael Madhusudan Dutt ने The Indigo Planting Mirror (कलकत्ता, 1861; शीर्षक-पृष्ठ “a Native द्वारा बांग्ला से अनूदित”) के रूप में अनुवाद किया।

2. From which book is Kalam’s set essay, and what is the claim of the title?2 marks

A. P. J. Abdul Kalam’s “Patriotism beyond Politics and Religion” is chapter 5 of Ignited Minds: Unleashing the Power Within India (Penguin, 2002), not Wings of Fire. The claim is that patriotism is larger than party and larger than sect. “For great men, religion is a way of making friends; small people make religion a fighting tool.” The essay wants harmony and a strong nation together.

A. P. J. Abdul Kalam का “Patriotism beyond Politics and Religion” Ignited Minds: Unleashing the Power Within India (Penguin, 2002) का अध्याय 5 है, Wings of Fire नहीं।

3. Name the chief figures in Nil Darpan and state how Goluk’s house ends.2 marks

Goluk Chunder Basu is the householder-ryot; Soirindri his wife; Nobin Madhab the elder son who resists; Bindu Madhab the younger; Sabitri, Nobin’s wife; Torap the loyal servant; planters Mr Wood and Mr Rose; Ray Churn, a kinsman who takes the factory’s side. Nobin is beaten and dies of his wounds; Goluk dies after humiliation and prison; Soirindri and Sabitri are left in wreckage. The family is not saved. The “mirror” makes English readers watch their own countrymen as villains.

4. Write a note on Nil Darpan as Bengal Renaissance protest theatre in English.8 marks · about 200 words

Nil Darpan means the indigo mirror: a play held up so planters and the capital can see the ryot’s face. Dinabandhu Mitra (1830–1873), a government official who had seen indigo districts, writes it in Bengali in 1860, in the climate of the indigo disturbances. Ryots were forced to plant indigo instead of food, paid wretchedly, beaten by factory men. The play is Bengal Renaissance theatre: modern social stage, not a Puranic dance. Michael Madhusudan Dutt — the same Madhusudan who began in English verse and then made Bengali epic — translates it as The Indigo Planting Mirror (1861). James Long published the English; he was fined Rs 1,000 and imprisoned one month. The translation thus enters colonial law as well as literature. The prescribed English text is Dutt’s. The play is Indian writing through English, not originally IWE in Naik’s sense.

The form is a prose drama of household and factory, melodramatic in the nineteenth-century sense — tears, deaths, villain planters Wood and Rose, loyal Torap, a family pulled apart. That melodrama is the genre that could carry peasant suffering to a middle-class Calcutta audience and, in English, to officials who did not read Bengali. Goluk’s prosperity is what the factory wants to break; Ray Churn shows indigo splitting kin, not only race. Nobin’s resistance is legal and physical; it does not save the house. Sumit Sarkar’s caution still applies: elite theatre, real wound. Beside Markandaya both works are land and hunger, but Nectar is a woman’s memory of tenancy after 1947, and Nil Darpan is an 1860 factory-play before Gandhi.

The English readers must watch their own countrymen as villains, not as Kipling’s burden-bearers. Indigo replaces food; tea is another crop and another history. Mitra, Dutt and Long remain three different jobs. The play sits in Unit 1’s Renaissance table beside Bankim’s English novel and Madhusudan’s double tongue. Dattani, not Mitra, remains the prescribed original-English dramatist.

5. Write a note on Kalam’s “Patriotism beyond Politics and Religion.”8 marks · about 200 words

Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam (1931–2015), scientist and later President, writes Ignited Minds as public argument, not as memoir only. Chapter 5, the set essay, opens from Vivekananda: better a hundred thousand hells doing good than a private liberation that ignores others. The claim of the title is the claim of the chapter: patriotism is larger than party and larger than sect. “For great men, religion is a way of making friends; small people make religion a fighting tool.” The Rig Veda line he likes — let noble thoughts come from every side — is the old Indian warrant for a modern civic English. This is Unit 1’s prose shelf: IWE is not only novels. The English is twenty-first-century, plain, hortatory. The chapter is not Wings of Fire and not a biography of the missile programme.

He builds by anecdote. Biju Patnaik’s friendship with Sukarno, and Patnaik’s hunger for an Indian long-range missile, show a politician whose love of the country outruns office. Gandhi in Noakhali, with riot-wounded families rather than on the Red Fort rampart on 15 August, is patriotism as service. A family memory from Rameswaram — Hindu and Muslim life sharing a tank, an idol, a jump into water — is brotherhood as practice. Syrian Christians of Kerala and A. R. Rahman stand for a mixed cultural India: identity can enrich “Indianness” without becoming a fighting tool. He disagrees with voices that would have India remain without nuclear defence among armed neighbours; security, for him, is part of the nation’s care. “No ideology is above the security and prosperity of our country. No agenda is more important than harmony among the people.”

The essay’s method is mission-talk: vision, combined action, a nation that stops belittling itself. Kalam’s English is the opposite of Kolatkar’s cool camera and the cousin of Unit 1’s reform pamphlets. Beside Nil Darpan the unit shows two worlds: translation of a colonial wound, and a civic essay asking the young to think of the nation as bigger than the individual.

6. “This unit reads India through English.” Discuss Nil Darpan and Kalam’s essay as two different proofs of that claim.20 marks · about 500 words

Unit 5 sets two prose-worlds that are not originally English lyric. Dinabandhu Mitra’s Bengali play Nil Darpan (1860) appears in Michael Madhusudan Dutt’s English as The Indigo Planting Mirror (1861). A. P. J. Abdul Kalam’s “Patriotism beyond Politics and Religion” is chapter 5 of Ignited Minds (2002). Sisir Kumar Das and Sumit Sarkar frame the play as Bengal Renaissance theatre of protest. Kalam is twenty-first-century public English. One text is translation of a colonial wound; the other is a civic essay. Both answer “Indian writing through English.” Only Kalam is IWE in Naik’s strict sense, because he composes originally in English. Mitra wrote in Bengali. Dattani, not Mitra, remains the prescribed original-English playwright. Kalam remains an essayist, not a lyric poet beside Dai.

The play is a mirror held up to indigo. Ryots are forced to plant the dye-crop instead of food, beaten, locked, insulted. Goluk Chunder Basu’s house is the family the factory wants to break; Nobin resists and dies of wounds; Goluk dies after humiliation; Soirindri, Sabitri, loyal Torap, planters Wood and Rose, and kinsman Ray Churn on the factory’s side complete the map. Melodrama is the nineteenth-century tool that carried peasant suffering to Calcutta’s middle class and, in Dutt’s English, to officials and to a courtroom. James Long, the publisher, was fined Rs 1,000 and jailed one month: the English book entered colonial law. Madhusudan’s life is Unit 1’s double tongue: English verse, then Bengali epic, then this translation. Sarkar’s caution belongs here: elite theatre, real wound, not a rebirth of the whole people. Beside Markandaya the same land and hunger look different — a woman’s memory of tenancy after 1947 versus a factory-play before Gandhi. The crop is indigo, not tea.

Kalam’s chapter is not a wound-narrative. It is mission-talk in plain English. Patriotism beyond politics and religion means larger than party, larger than sect. Vivekananda opens the door; the Rig Veda line lets noble thoughts come from every side. Anecdotes do the work a diagram cannot: Patnaik and Sukarno; Gandhi in Noakhali instead of the Red Fort rampart; Rameswaram’s shared tank; a mixed cultural India that can enrich Indianness without becoming a fighting tool. Security is part of the nation’s care; no ideology sits above prosperity and harmony. “For great men, religion is a way of making friends; small people make religion a fighting tool.” The English is hortatory, the cousin of Unit 1’s reform pamphlets and Nehru’s public book, the opposite of Kolatkar’s camera.

The claim “through English” therefore has two tones. In 1861 English is the ruler’s language used against the ruler’s own planters — a Native translator, a missionary publisher, a fine and a jail. In 2002 English is one of India’s public languages, used by a President-scientist to define patriotism for students. Naik keeps the play off the definition of IWE and lets Kalam onto the prose shelf. The course outcomes want both ears: the evolution of Indian writing in English, and the gamut that includes translation. Unit 1 named that double door; Unit 5 is the set proof.

The essay closes with the last unit’s arc: from indigo’s colonial wound to a scientist asking the young to think of the nation as bigger than the individual. Mitra, Dutt and Long remain three jobs. Ignited Minds is not Wings of Fire. Original IWE and translation remain two shelves. Two clear proofs, not one fog, answer the claim that this unit reads India through English.

A. P. J. Abdul Kalam का “Patriotism beyond Politics and Religion” Ignited Minds (2002) का अध्याय 5 है।

Ignited Minds, Wings of Fire नहीं।
