Unit 3 · Ayurveda and Yoga

This unit is IKS as health science. The heading is Ayurveda and Yoga together: not two hobby-classes, and not Unit 2’s darshana-essay again. Then the elements: gunas and doshas; pancha mahabhuta and sapta-dhatu; the concept of disease; lifestyle — dinacharya and ritucharya; important Ayurvedic texts; hospitals in ancient India; and Ayurveda as a gift of India to the modern world. Gita XVII’s three foods and VI.16–17’s measured life are assumed. Charaka, Sushruta and Patanjali as persons are Unit 5; here you need the system they wrote inside.

Working lines follow K. R. Srikantha Murthy’s English of Vagbhata’s Ashtanga Hrdaya, Vol. I, Sutrasthana and Sharirasthana (Krishnadas Academy, Varanasi, 1991) — the paper’s named Ayurveda book — with Mahadevan, Bhat and Nagendra Pavana on IKS applications, Bora’s foundation-book, and Bose, Sen and Subbarayappa on Indian science. Yoga as health-practice sits with Ayurveda in this unit; Patanjali’s full life-sketch is Unit 5.

1 Ayurveda and Yoga as health sciences

Ayurveda means the knowledge (veda) of life (ayus). It is not “herbal tea instead of a hospital.” Srikantha Murthy’s Ashtanga Hrdaya opens as a science of keeping the healthy well and treating the ill: svastha first, then atura. Health is a balance you can name — dosha, agni, dhatu, mala, mind — not a mood. Yoga on this paper, in this unit, is the sister practice: stilling and measuring body and mind so that the same person can stay svastha. Unit 2 already gave Patanjali’s school-tag (chitta-vritti-nirodha, ashtanga) and Gita VI’s measured food and sleep. Here yoga is health science: yama-niyama as conduct, asana-pranayama as body-breath, pratyahara-dharana-dhyana-samadhi as the inner ladder — named, not performed as a gym syllabus.

The two are not twins with one face. Ayurveda is more physician: diagnosis, herb, diet, panchakarma, surgery in Sushruta’s line. Yoga is more discipline of the mind-body that prevents the physician from being needed every week. A viva that says “Ayurveda = Yoga” has collapsed the heading. A viva that says “Yoga is only stretching” has dropped Unit 2’s darshana and this unit’s health-claim together.

Bose’s history of science puts Indian medicine in the same civilisational shelf as metallurgy and math: observation, text, teacher. Mahadevan’s applications chapter asks a science student to see dosha and guna as a working model, not as a rival to a blood-test. This unit never tells you to throw a modern emergency ward away. It asks you to know what India systematised as ayus-veda and yoga, and why the world still borrows both (lesson 10).

2 Gunas

The three gunas are sattva, rajas and tamas. Unit 2 met them in Samkhya (prakriti’s strands) and on the Gita’s plate (XVII.8–10). Ayurveda keeps the same three as qualities of mind, food, and the day’s feel. Sattva: clarity, lightness, order — the mind that can see. Rajas: motion, hunger of doing, heat — useful to act, harmful when it only agitates. Tamas: heaviness, inertia, fog — needed for sleep, harmful when it is laziness or stale leftover as a way of life. Srikantha Murthy’s Sutrasthana treats food and routine as guna-work: what you eat and when you sleep pull the mind toward one strand.

Do not confuse guna with dosha. Gunas are the three qualities of prakriti and of lived stuff (food, sleep, company). Doshas (next lesson) are three biological humours of the body. Sattva is not “vata.” A student who writes “three gunas: vata, pitta, kapha” has mixed the two lists the syllabus prints as a pair: gunas and doshas.

Exam use: define the three; give one food-example from XVII; say Ayurveda uses them to read mind and ahara, not to name a caste. If asked only “gunas in Ayurveda,” stay on sattva-rajas-tamas. If asked “gunas and doshas,” give both lists and the one-line difference.

3 Doshas

The three doshas are vata, pitta and kapha — often taught as wind, fire-water, and earth-water of the living body. Ashtanga Hrdaya’s Sutrasthana makes them the first working tools of the physician. Vata: motion — breath, nerve-impulse, elimination, dryness, cold, irregularity. When balanced, movement is smooth; when not, pain, gas, worry, cracked dryness. Pitta: transformation — digestion, heat, sight, sharpness. Balanced: clear hunger and intellect; unbalanced: inflammation, acid, anger-heat. Kapha: cohesion — structure, lubrication, sleep, steadiness. Balanced: strength and calm; unbalanced: heaviness, congestion, excess sleep. Everyone has all three; a prakriti is which mix you were built with; a vikriti is the mix gone off today.

Dosha is not “toxin” as in a magazine. The word means a fault when it goes out of measure; in measure it is the body’s own intelligence. Tridosha is the three together. Seasonal aggravation is why ritucharya exists (lesson 8): heat raises pitta, cold-dry wind raises vata, damp-cold raises kapha. Rajasthan’s dry heat is a vata-pitta classroom, not a fourth dosha.

If asked “doshas,” name three, one job each, prakriti vs vikriti, and the guna distinction. Do not invent a fourth humour. Do not equate pitta with “the liver only.” Do not dump panchakarma lists unless the question asks treatment; this unit’s heading is elements, disease-concept, and lifestyle.

DoshaWhen it worksWhen it overflows

KaphaStructure, oil, restHeaviness, congestion, excess sleep

4 Pancha mahabhuta and sapta-dhatu

Pancha mahabhuta: five great elements — akasha (space), vayu (air), agni (fire), jala (water), prithvi (earth). Ayurveda’s Sharira-talk (Srikantha Murthy’s Sharirasthana) builds the body from these. Doshas are combinations: vata leans space+air, pitta fire+water, kapha water+earth. The same five sit in Unit 1’s nature (sky, wind, heat, river, soil) and in Samkhya’s evolution of prakriti. Here they are medical: a dry cracked body is short of jala and too much vayu; a swollen heavy body is too much jala-prithvi.

Sapta-dhatu: seven tissues, in order of transformation from food. Rasa (plasma / nutritive sap after digestion), rakta (blood), mamsa (muscle), meda (fat), asthi (bone), majja (marrow), shukra (reproductive tissue). Each is fed by the one before if agni is good. Ojas — the essence of all seven — is named as vitality; do not make it an eighth dhatu unless a book you are using does, and then say so. Mala (waste: faeces, urine, sweat) are not dhatu; they must leave.

If the question prints both phrases, give five bhutas then seven dhatus, one sentence that food becomes dhatu through agni, and one that doshas are bhuta-mixes in the living body. Do not recite a biochemistry textbook. Do not skip the order of the seven; the order is the teaching.

5 Concept of disease

Disease in Ayurveda is not first a Latin name. It is imbalance that can be described: doshas out of their seats and measures; agni weak or fierce; ama (undigested residue) clogging the paths; dhatus underfed or overfed; malas stuck; the mind’s gunas pulled to rajas and tamas. The Ashtanga Hrdaya line is that the same factors that build health, in wrong measure, unbuild it. Nidana (cause — wrong food, season, suppression of urges, overwork), purvarupa (early signs), rupa (clear signs), then treatment that restores measure: diet, routine, herb, and stronger procedures when needed.

Two technical words earn marks. Agni: the digestive-transformative fire; if it fails, even good food becomes ama. Ama: that sticky uncooked leftover in the body-mind — Gita XVII.10’s stale plate as an inner fact. This unit does not ask a full diagnosis of a named modern illness.

Trap: “Ayurveda says all disease is dosha” is too thin — add agni, ama, dhatu, mala, mind. Ancient texts still isolated the ill, cleaned wounds (Sushruta), and blamed bad water and season. Do not fight Unit 1’s climate-wisdom: a disease-concept that ignores ritu is not this paper’s Ayurveda.

6 Dinacharya

Dinacharya is the daily regimen — the day’s measured walk. Ashtanga Hrdaya’s Sutrasthana is the named place for it. The shape is: rise in brahma-muhurta (last watch of night); evacuate; clean teeth, tongue, face; oil (abhyanga) as the body-type (prakriti) allows; exercise in measure; bathe; sattvika food at settled times (Gita XVII.8, VI.17); work; a lighter evening; sleep when kapha-time asks, not late into the night. Oil in the nose (nasya), oil in the ears, and care of the eyes appear as daily care. Suppressing natural urges (urine, hunger, tears, breath after a run) is listed as a cause of disease — nidana you can prevent before a herb is needed.

The point is not a museum timetable. The point is what Unit 2’s yoga of measure looks like on a weekday in Bikaner: water first, not ice-cold leftover; movement before heat peaks; the main meal when agni is strong; wind and dust (vata) met with oil and a covered head. Dinacharya is prevention sitting in the same book as treatment.

If asked “dinacharya,” give the day’s arc (wake, cleanse, oil, move, eat, work, sleep), name Ashtanga Hrdaya Sutrasthana, and one don’t (vega-dharana). Do not copy a long internet list. Do not confuse it with ritucharya — that is the year’s arc, next lesson.

7 Ritucharya

Ritucharya is the seasonal regimen. Unit 1’s six ritus are the clock; this lesson is how the body stays on that clock. Ashtanga Hrdaya again: each ritu aggravates or calms a dosha, so food, oil, exercise and the day’s heat change. Classroom pairs (names vary slightly by region; hold the logic): cold-dry months care for vata (oil, warm sour-sweet, not raw wind); hot months care for pitta (bitter-sweet-astringent, moonlight, not extra chilli and noon-sun); wet-cold months care for kapha (light, pungent-bitter, more movement, not extra sweet-sleep). Hemanta/shishira can be a season of strength if you eat and oil enough; grishma spends that strength.

Rajasthan makes the teaching local: grishma is long; varsha may be a short violent rain; the Thar wind is vata. Ritucharya here is not Kerala’s coconut-calendar copied blindly. It is the same principle on this soil: match ahara and vihara to ritu so doshas do not have to become disease. Gita VI.16–17 (measure) plus XVII (guna of food) plus Unit 1’s monsoon-wisdom meet in this one word.

If asked “ritucharya,” define it, name six ritus, give one dosha-season pair, and distinguish dinacharya (day) from ritucharya (year). Do not write a tourist festival list. Do not dump panchakarma tourism.

8 Important Ayurvedic texts

Three books are the classroom brihat-trayi, the great triad. Charaka Samhita: the Atreya-Charaka line; stronger on kaya-chikitsa (inner medicine), nidana, and the physician’s ethics. Charaka the person is Unit 5. Sushruta Samhita: the Dhanvantari-Sushruta line; stronger on shalya (surgery), anatomy, wound, and the famous training of the hand. Sushruta the person is Unit 5. Ashtanga Hrdaya of Vagbhata: the paper’s named translation (Srikantha Murthy) — eight limbs of Ayurveda boiled into a teachable heart-text; Sutrasthana for dinacharya, dosha, food; Sharirasthana for the body. If the question says “important texts,” these three first.

Ashtanga (eight limbs of Ayurveda, not of yoga): kaya-chikitsa, shalya, shalakya (eye-ear-nose-throat), kaumara-bhritya (children), agada-tantra (poison), bhuta-vidya (mind/possession in old vocabulary), rasayana (rejuvenation), vajikarana (fertility). You need the idea of eight limbs; you do not need a hospital-department chart. Do not let later manuals push Charaka-Sushruta-Vagbhata off the page.

Atharvaveda’s healing hymns are the older heard shelf (Unit 2); they are not the Samhita of Charaka. If asked for one book this paper itself points to, name Ashtanga Hrdaya in Srikantha Murthy’s English, Sutrasthana and Sharirasthana.

9 Hospitals in ancient India

The syllabus asks for hospitals in ancient India, not for a modern hospital-chain history. The evidence is scattered and that is the honest sentence. Buddhist viharas kept infirmaries; monks’ vinaya rules already separate the sick and assign care. Ashoka’s edicts speak of medical treatment for humans and animals along the roads — a state claiming health as public work. Chinese pilgrims (Faxian at Pataliputra) describe halls where the poor and ill were treated without a fee. Charaka discusses the atura’s room: light, cleanliness, attendants, instruments. Sushruta needs a prepared space, tools, and a pupil who has practised on models before a living body. These are hospitals as places of organised care, not always a stone building with a painted board.

Do not invent a nationwide chain of luxury clinics in 400 BCE. Do not deny the places because they were not called “hospital” in English. Bose’s science history treats this as civic medicine sitting beside civic drains in Unit 1’s Harappan cities — different millennia, same IKS claim: care was institutional, not only a wandering herb-seller.

If asked, give: vihara infirmary; Ashoka’s medical charity; pilgrim notice of free halls; Charaka’s atura-sala conditions; Sushruta’s surgical theatre as a trained space. One line: Unit 4’s universities (Nalanda) also housed learning that included medicine; the hospital heading is the care-site, not the lecture-site.

10 Ayurveda: gift to the modern world

The last heading is a claim, so keep it tight. Gift means the world still uses what this civilisation named: a whole-person model (dosha, agni, routine); plants now in global pharmacies (the Bose history of materia medica); surgical ideas in Sushruta’s line (rhinoplasty as a remembered craft); yoga as a worldwide health practice; the insistence that food and season are medicine (dinacharya, ritucharya, Gita XVII). WHO and many states now speak of traditional medicine as a resource to study, not as a superstition to hide. That is the modern sentence. NEP 4.27 wanted Knowledge of India to include such contributions; this unit is that paragraph in medical dress.

Honesty that earns more marks than a slogan. Ayurveda is not a substitute for emergency surgery, vaccines, or a lab report you actually need. Sushruta’s skill does not mean every market powder is Charaka. Yoga’s gift is ruined if it is only a paid stretch with no yama. The gift is the system: observe, name, measure, teach, write a samhita, train a hand, keep a hall for the ill.

Unit 3 closes as Unit 2 closed: a chain. Gunas and doshas name the person; bhuta and dhatu name the stuff; disease is measure lost; dinacharya and ritucharya are measure kept; texts and hospitals are how the knowledge was stored and staffed; the world still borrows the chain. Unit 4 will show the schools where such knowledge sat as a curriculum. Unit 5 will name the authors.
