Unit 2 · Vedic corpus, philosophy, Bhagavad Gita
This unit is the shastra door of IKS. Three blocks sit under one heading. The Vedic corpus: Vedas and Vedangas, and the distinctive features of Vedic life. Indian philosophical systems: the different schools. Bhagavad Gita: introduction and study, including memorization of the set slokas — II.47–50 and 70; IV.34; VI.16–17; XVI.1–5; XVII.8–10. Unit 1 named the land. Here the land is sung, argued, and taught as a way to act. Ayurveda, universities and named lives wait in Units 3–5. Patanjali, Kanada, Shankara, Nagarjuna, Panini belong to Unit 5 as persons; this unit only needs the schools they stand in.
The Vedic and darshana map follows Mahadevan, Bhat and Nagendra Pavana, Introduction to Indian Knowledge System (PHI, 2022); Mukul Chandra Bora, Foundations of Bharatiya Knowledge System; and Baladev Upadhyaya, Samskrta Śāstrom ka Itihās (Chowkhamba, Varanasi, 2010). Sense of the set Gita slokas follows S. Radhakrishnan’s English reading as a classroom guide only. Memorize the Sanskrit; the English and Hindi below are the meaning, not a substitute for the verse.
1 The Vedic corpus
A Veda is not “an old Hindu story-book.” The word means knowledge that was heard (shruti) and kept by oral parampara, not first filed as paper. Mahadevan’s IKS chapter treats the Veda as the root-store of later shastra: ritual, metre, language, sky-reckoning, and the questions the Upanishads will turn inward. Upadhyaya’s history of Sanskrit shastras starts here because grammar, calendar and law grow as tools of this store. Smriti (remembered: law-books, epics, Puranas) is later and secondary. The Gita is smriti in form (it sits in the Mahabharata) but is read as a teaching of Vedanta; do not call the Gita “a Veda.”
Each Veda is a corpus, a stack, not one hymn-book. Four layers are the classroom cut. Samhita: the mantras themselves. Brahmana: prose that tells how and why the rite is done. Aranyaka: “forest” books — the same rite thought at a distance from the village fire. Upanishad: teaching that asks what the rite, the self and brahman are. A student who says “Veda = only the Rig hymns” has dropped three-quarters of the stack. The four Vedas (next lesson) are four samhita-families; each family can carry Brahmana, Aranyaka and Upanishad of its own.
Two traps. Shruti is not “whatever a priest likes today.” It is a closed heard corpus, taught in shakhas (recension-schools). And “Vedic corpus” is not the same as “Vedic life”: the hymns are the books; the life is how people fired the altar, herded, guest-fed and kept rta (lesson 4). If a short question asks “what is the Vedic corpus,” name shruti, the four Vedas, the four layers, and one line that this is IKS’s textual root, not Unit 1’s river-map.
| Word | What it names | What it is not |
|---|---|---|
| Shruti | Heard corpus — the Veda | Not smriti; not “any holy talk” |
| Samhita / Brahmana / Aranyaka / Upanishad | Four layers of each Veda-family | Not four other religions |
| Smriti | Remembered tradition: epics, law, Gita as a text in the epic | Not a fifth Veda in this unit’s definition |
2 The four Vedas
Four samhita-families make the Veda as this paper counts it. Rigveda: hymns (sukta) to Agni, Indra, Soma, Ushas, the rivers of Unit 1, the rta of the sky. It is the oldest layer in the classroom story, and the one most quoted as poetry of praise. Yajurveda: the Veda of the yajus — the formulae spoken while the rite is actually done. Two broad recensions: Shukla (White) and Krishna (Black). If Rig is the hymn-book, Yajur is the priest’s working script at the fire. Samaveda: most of its verses are Rig lines set to chant (saman). It is the Veda of song, not a third pile of new stories. Atharvaveda: hymns of healing, household, protection, plants and peace, beside the high soma-rite. Bose’s history of science notes this Veda because herb and charm sit next to each other — Unit 3’s Ayurveda will still be picking plants; do not dump Charaka here.
A short map of jobs, not of “better and worse.” Hotr (Rig), adhvaryu (Yajur), udgatr (Sama) are the three named ritual voices; the Atharvan/Brahman later stands as the fourth who watches the whole. You need the four names and one job each. “There are four Vedas” without jobs is a slogan. “Atharva is not a real Veda” is an old prejudice this paper does not ask you to repeat.
Upavedas are sometimes listed as later “applied” pairs (Ayurveda with Atharva, Dhanurveda, Gandharvaveda, Arthashastra/Sthapatya — lists vary). This unit’s heading is Vedas and Vedangas, not Upavedas. Mention an Upaveda only to say Ayurveda is Unit 3. If asked “four Vedas,” write Rig hymn, Yajur rite-formula, Sama chant, Atharva house-and-heal, and the shruti stack from lesson 1.
| Veda | Main job | Do not say |
|---|---|---|
| Rigveda | Hymn of praise; oldest classroom layer | Not “the only Veda” |
| Yajurveda | Formulae of the rite at the fire | Not a copy of the Gita |
| Samaveda | Chant — mostly Rig lines sung | Not a fourth independent epic |
| Atharvaveda | House, heal, protect, plants | Not “un-Vedic” on this paper |
3 The six Vedangas
Vedanga means a limb of the Veda — a tool without which the heard corpus cannot be spoken, timed, or performed. Upadhyaya’s shastra-history treats the six as the first organised sciences around shruti. They are not six extra Vedas. The six names, in the usual classroom order: Shiksha (phonetics — how the sound is made); Kalpa (ritual procedure — shrauta, grihya, dharma, shulba); Vyakarana (grammar — Panini’s Ashtadhyayi is Unit 5’s life; here the anga is the science); Nirukta (etymology and word-meaning of the hymns — Yaska); Chandas (metre); Jyotisha (sky-reckoning for the rite — when to light the fire). Mahadevan lists the same six as IKS’s first “applied” cluster: sound, rule, language, meaning, metre, time.
One job each keeps an MCQ from mixing them. If the hymn is mispronounced, shiksha has failed. If the altar’s measures are wrong, kalpa (and the shulba-sutras) has failed. If the sentence cannot be analysed, vyakarana has failed. If a Vedic word is guessed from modern Hindi, nirukta has failed. If gayatri is treated as “any prayer,” chandas has failed. If the moon is ignored and the rite is done on a wrong day, jyotisha has failed. Bose’s science history will meet jyotisha and shulba again as mathematics; Unit 5’s Aryabhata is later astronomy, not a Vedanga author.
Do not confuse Vedanga with Vedanta. Vedanta is a darshana (lesson 6). Vedanga is a limb of recitation and rite. Do not confuse Vedanga with Upaveda. If asked “Vedangas,” list the six Sanskrit names, one English job each, and one sentence: they exist so that shruti can be kept alive in the mouth and on the calendar, not as six novels.
| Vedanga | Job | Classroom name often attached |
|---|---|---|
| Shiksha | Phonetics of mantra | Sound, not “school education” |
| Kalpa | How the rite and household rules run | Includes shulba (altar geometry) |
| Vyakarana | Grammar | Panini is Unit 5 |
| Nirukta | Meaning of Vedic words | Yaska |
| Chandas | Metre | Gayatri is a metre, not a goddess-name only |
| Jyotisha | Time and sky for the rite | Not Aryabhata’s later siddhanta as such |
4 Distinctive features of Vedic life
Vedic life is how the people of the hymns actually ordered a day, a year and a people — not a temple-tourism brochure. The centre is the fire (agni): household fire and the larger yajna. The order of the world is rta — the straightness of seasons, truth-speech, and rite together; anrta is the lie that bends that order. Unit 1’s six ritus and rivers are already in the hymns; here the point is that climate and rite were one clock. Cattle, barley, soma, guest-law (atithi), and the spoken word as a public act (a vow kept) are marks of that life. Knowledge moves by guru-shishya and recitation, which is why Vedanga exists.
Society in the hymns is still more jana than later rigid jati. The Purusha-sukta names four varnas as a cosmic image; do not turn Unit 2 into a caste pamphlet, and do not pretend the hymn is silent. Women appear as hymn-seers (rishikas) in the tradition’s own list; later Upanishadic debate (Gargi) is the same stream turning inward. Early Vedic religion is not primarily image-puja in a stone mandir; it is mantra, offering, and sky. Later temple Hinduism is not “fake”; it is not this unit’s distinctive mark.
What to write if asked “features of Vedic life”: fire and yajna; rta; oral teaching; cattle-and-field economy on the rivers of Unit 1; guest-dharma; mantra as work, not only feeling; a people still close to jana and rite rather than to Nalanda’s lecture-hall (Unit 4). Do not dump the Gita’s nishkama karma as a Vedic-life bullet — that is a later teaching in this same unit. Do not dump dinacharya — that is Ayurveda, Unit 3.
| Mark of Vedic life | Means | Not the same as |
|---|---|---|
| Agni / yajna | Fire as the working centre | Not later stone-temple puja as the definition |
| Rta | Order: season, truth, rite | Not “ritual for show” |
| Oral parampara | Heard, recited, guru-shishya | Not Nalanda’s campus (Unit 4) |
| Jana, cattle, guest | People, herd, atithi-dharma | Not a factory economy |
5 Indian philosophical systems — the map
A darshana is a view — a school that says how we know (pramana) and what there is (tattva), and how a life should end in freedom or clarity. It is not “being philosophical” as a mood. Indian systems on this paper are plural on purpose. Mahadevan and Bora both warn against collapsing them into one slogan called “Hindu philosophy.” Upadhyaya’s shastra-history is the shelf of these views as Sanskrit disciplines.
The classroom split is astika and nastika. Astika here does not mean “believes in God.” It means the school accepts the Veda as a pramana (a valid means of knowing). Nastika means it does not take the Veda as authority — not “atheist” as a swear-word. Six astika darshanas are the usual list (next lesson). A good map names both sides. A bad map pretends only the six exist, or that nastika is outside IKS.
Three nastika streams need one clean sentence each if the question is “different schools.” Charvaka / Lokayata: perception (pratyaksha) is the working pramana; the world is material (the four elements in the usual report); no surviving full book — later writers quote opponents. Jaina: living jiva in many forms; ahimsa as the first vow; truth has many sides (anekantavada); liberation by stopping the inflow of karma. Bauddha: four noble truths (duhkha, its arising, its stopping, the path); anatta (no permanent self); later Madhyamaka is Nagarjuna in Unit 5. Do not write a history of all sects; name the three, then fill the six astika.
Do not confuse darshana with Vedanga. Vedanga serves the Veda’s sound and rite. Darshana argues about knowledge and liberation. Do not write “nine schools” unless you clearly mean six astika plus three nastika. If the question is “different schools of Indian philosophy,” draw this map first, then fill the six, then one sentence each on Charvaka, Jaina, Bauddha. Lives of Shankara and Nagarjuna wait in Unit 5.
| Cut | Means on this paper | Trap |
|---|---|---|
| Astika | Veda is a pramana — six darshanas | Not simply “believes in God” |
| Nastika | Does not take Veda as authority — Charvaka, Jaina, Bauddha | Not “outside IKS” |
| Darshana | A school of knowing and being | Not Vedanga; not a temple sect-name only |
6 The six astika darshanas
Six views, six jobs. Learn a one-line tattva and a one-line aim. They are often paired: Nyaya–Vaisheshika, Samkhya–Yoga, Mimamsa–Vedanta.
Nyaya: the school of nyaya — right reasoning. Sixteen padarthas in Gautama’s Nyaya-sutra; four pramanas commonly listed (perception, inference, comparison, word). Aim: tattva-jnana that ends duhkha. Vaisheshika: Kanada’s (Unit 5) analysis of padarthas; the famous mark is paramanu (atom) and vishesha (particularity). Physics-talk belongs here as IKS, not as a modern lab. Samkhya: dualism of purusha (consciousness) and prakriti (nature); prakriti evolves through the three gunas — sattva, rajas, tamas — which Unit 3’s Ayurveda and Gita XVII will still be using. Yoga: Patanjali’s (Unit 5) practical path; chitta-vritti-nirodha; eight limbs — yama, niyama, asana, pranayama, pratyahara, dharana, dhyana, samadhi (Unit 3 names them as health-practice). Samkhya’s map, Yoga’s method. Purva Mimamsa: how the Veda’s ritual word is to be interpreted; dharma as the Veda’s command; Jaimini. Uttara Mimamsa / Vedanta: the Upanishadic end of the Veda; brahman, atman; Shankara’s Advaita is one famous reading (Unit 5), not the only Vedanta.
Exam discipline: do not write a biography of Kanada or Patanjali or Shankara here beyond the school-tag. Do not say “Yoga = asana class.” Do not say “Vedanta = the Gita only”; the Gita is a smriti-prasthana of Vedanta, beside Upanishad and Brahma-sutra. If asked to “compare schools,” pick one pair (Samkhya/Yoga, or Mimamsa/Vedanta) and state the difference in one clean contrast: map vs path, or rite-word vs brahman-inquiry.

7 Bhagavad Gita — introduction
The Bhagavad Gita is a teaching of eighteen chapters spoken on the Kurukshetra field, set inside the Bhishma-parvan of the Mahabharata: Krishna teaches Arjuna when Arjuna’s bow drops. It is smriti in location, Vedanta in later reading (one of the three prasthanas). Mahadevan treats it as IKS’s working ethics of action, not as a war-manual. This paper does not set the whole Gita. It sets an introduction plus the listed slokas to memorize. Other famous verses (the vishvarupa, the last chapter’s “sarva-dharman…”) are not on the list. Hold II, IV, VI, XVI and XVII, and hold the Sanskrit in the mouth.
Classroom frame, three yogas, without writing eighteen summaries. Karma-yoga: act, but do not let the fruit own you (II.47–50). Jnana: know through a teacher who has seen (IV.34). Dhyana / yoga of practice: a life measured in food and sleep (VI.16–17). Chapter XVI sorts two inner endowments, daivi and asuri. Chapter XVII sorts food by the three gunas — a bridge into Unit 3. The ocean-verse II.70 pictures the still person into whom desires enter without unseating the water.
How to use the next lessons in a viva or MCQ. Recite the Sanskrit. Then give the one-line job of that sloka. Do not preach. Do not turn II.47 into “do not work.” The verse says you have a right to action, not to the fruit — work remains. Radhakrishnan’s English is a sense-guide; the exam of this VAC can ask the sloka itself. Stay on the set numbers.
8 Gita II.47–50 and II.70
II.47. Your claim is to action, never to the fruits; do not make fruit the cause of work, and do not cling to inaction. This is the paper’s nishkama-karma line. II.48. Steadfast in yoga, do acts having dropped attachment; even in success and failure, stay the same — that evenness is called yoga. II.49. Action done only for fruit is far lower than buddhi-yoga; take refuge in buddhi; the wretched are those who work only as fruit-causes. II.50. The one yoked to buddhi sheds good-deed and ill-deed here; therefore yoke yourself to yoga; yoga is skill in actions. Memorize 47 and 50 first if the mouth can hold only two: right to work, not fruit; yoga as kaushalam in karma.
II.70. As waters enter a full, still ocean and the ocean does not lose its stand, so the one into whom all desires enter attains peace — not the one who runs after desire. This is the picture of 47–50 lived: work and the world’s wants may come in; the person is not emptied by them. The climate of these verses is evenness and peace, not laziness.
Trap: “do nothing” is exactly what 47 forbids in its last quarter. Trap: 50’s “skill” is not office cleverness; it is the skill of acting without the fruit as master. If asked only II.47, recite and give the four clauses. If asked II.70, keep the ocean; do not swap in XVI’s daivi list.
II.47.

9 Gita IV.34 and VI.16–17
IV.34. Know that (teaching) by paying reverence, by repeated question, and by service; those who know, who have seen the tattva, will instruct you. The Gita’s jnana is guru-shishya, the same parampara Unit 1 named as IKS’s method and Unit 4 will house in universities. Three verbs: bow, ask, serve. Two marks of the teacher: jnanin, tattva-darshin. Trap: this is not “do not think.” Question is required; arrogance is not.
VI.16–17 are the yoga of measure — a bridge to Unit 3’s dinacharya. VI.16. Yoga is not for the one who eats too much, nor for the one who does not eat at all; not for the one who sleeps too much, nor for the one who stays awake without rest, O Arjuna. VI.17. For one whose food and movement are measured, whose effort in works is measured, whose sleep and waking are measured, yoga becomes the destroyer of duhkha. The sense is moderation, not starvation as holiness. The set list stops at 17; VI.18 is not asked.
Hold IV.34 with the Vedic guru-shishya of lesson 4, not with a modern motivational quote. Hold VI.16–17 with XVII.8–10 (three foods) and with Ayurveda’s measured day. If the viva says “yoga in the Gita,” do not demonstrate an asana; recite 16–17 and say: yoga here is a timed life that can then still the mind (Patanjali’s full ashtanga is Unit 3/5).
IV.34.
| Sloka | Job in one line |
|---|---|
| IV.34 | Jnana through reverence, question, service — tattva-seers teach |
| VI.16 | No yoga in excess food, hunger, sleep, or waking |
| VI.17 | Measured food, movement, work, sleep — yoga destroys duhkha |
10 Gita XVI.1–5
Chapter XVI is the two endowments — IKS ethics to memorize in Sanskrit. XVI.1. Fearlessness, purity of being, staying in jnana-yoga, giving, self-control, yajna, svadhyaya, tapas, uprightness. XVI.2. Ahimsa, truth, absence of anger, tyaga, shanti, not slandering, compassion for beings, ungreedy, gentleness, modesty, not fickle. XVI.3. Tejas, kshama, dhriti, shaucha, absence of hatred, not over-proud — these become the daivi sampad of one born to it, O Bharata. Learn 1–3 as one daivi cluster, not as twenty-four essays. XVI.4. Asuri sampad: dambha (show), darpa (arrogance), abhimana, krodha, parushya (harshness), and ajnana — of one born to the asuri endowment, O Partha. XVI.5. Daivi sampad is for vimoksha (liberation); asuri is held to be for bondage. Do not grieve; you are born to the daivi sampad, O Pandava.
The chapter is a moral sorting of mind, not a racial story and not a retelling of the Mahabharata war. Arjuna is told he already leans daivi; the list is a mirror, not a curse on a people. Stay on 1–5. XVI.6 onward is not set.
If the question is “daivi and asuri,” give 1–3 versus 4, then 5’s liberation/bondage, then the last clause to Arjuna. If it is “memorize XVI,” the Sanskrit of 4 and 5 is shorter; 1–3 must still be known as the daivi cluster. Do not mix XVII’s three foods into this answer.
| Verses | Name | Fruit (XVI.5) |
|---|---|---|
| XVI.1–3 | Daivi sampad — inner marks of the godlike mind | Liberation (vimoksha) |
| XVI.4 | Asuri sampad — show, pride, anger, harshness, ignorance | Bondage (nibandha) |
| XVI.5 last | Arjuna told not to grieve | He is born to daivi sampad |
11 Gita XVII.8–10
Three foods, three gunas — the last set slice, and the cleanest bridge into Unit 3. Memorize the Sanskrit. XVII.8. Sattvika: foods that increase life-span, sattva, strength, health, pleasure and affection; that are tasty, oily (snigdha), lasting, and dear to the heart. XVII.9. Rajasika: bitter, sour, salty, very hot, pungent, dry, burning; they give pain, grief and illness. XVII.10. Tamasika: stale, juice gone, putrid, leftover, and also leftover (ucchishta) and impure.
Samkhya’s three gunas (lesson 6) here sit on the plate. Unit 1’s seasonal wisdom already said the body is not separate from climate; XVII says the plate is not separate from the mind. Unit 3 will name ahara as part of dinacharya and ritucharya. Do not turn 8–10 into a modern diet-chart. The classification is guna. Stale leftover as tamasika is a hygiene-and-mind rule together.
Unit 2 closes here. Recite the set slokas as a chain: act without fruit (II) → learn from one who has seen (IV) → measure food and sleep (VI) → sort the mind (XVI) → sort the plate (XVII). That chain is the Gita this VAC actually asks. Veda and Vedanga were the heard root; darshanas were the views; the Gita is the portable teaching. Next unit takes the same gunas into Ayurveda and Yoga as health science.
| Sloka | Guna | Food-mark |
|---|---|---|
| XVII.8 | Sattva | Fresh, nourishing, agreeable — builds life and clarity |
| XVII.9 | Rajas | Too sharp, salt, heat — breeds pain and illness |
| XVII.10 | Tamas | Stale, foul, leftover, impure |
