Unit 1 · Introduction to IKS; Bharat Varsha, land, people and nature
This unit is the door of the paper. First block: Indian Knowledge System — definition of indigenous / traditional knowledge, then its scope and importance. Second block: ancient India as Bharat Varsha — the people; the Himalayas and the rivers; the civilizations of the Sindhu–Ganga valley and the Brahmaputra valley; the coastal plains; forests and minerals; and ancient wisdom about nature and climate. Veda, Gita, Ayurveda, old universities and named scholars sit in Units 2–5. Here you must be able to say what IKS is, why traditional knowledge matters, and how the land itself taught the people who lived on it.
The paper is a value-added course (VAC), undergraduate Semester IV, code IKS5VACT41. It is college internal assessment of 50 marks. The university does not set a 120-mark written paper for this course. College may use MCQ, project, viva or assignment — follow the notice. Pass line on the programme table is 36%. Write so that a short answer, a project paragraph, and a viva question can all be taken from the same notes.
Working definitions follow B. Mahadevan, Vinayak Rajat Bhat and Nagendra Pavana R.N., Introduction to Indian Knowledge System: Concepts and Applications (PHI Learning, 2022), and Mukul Chandra Bora, Foundations of Bharatiya Knowledge System (Khanna Book Publishing). River valleys, metals, forests and civic science follow D. M. Bose, S. N. Sen and B. V. Subbarayappa, eds., A Concise History of Science in India (2nd ed., Universities Press, Hyderabad, 2010). Living indigenous schooling is framed as in Dharampal, The Beautiful Tree (Rashtrotthana Sahitya, 2021). The policy line this paper sits under is NEP 2020, section 4.27, “Knowledge of India.”
काम-चलाने वाली परिभाषाएँ Mahadevan, Bhat और Nagendra Pavana, Introduction to Indian Knowledge System (PHI, 2022), तथा Mukul Chandra Bora, Foundations of Bharatiya Knowledge System से हैं। A Concise History of Science in India से।
1 What Indian Knowledge System names
Indian Knowledge System (IKS) is the organised body of knowledge that grew on this subcontinent and was handed down as a living parampara — a tradition of teaching, not a museum shelf. Mahadevan, Bhat and Nagendra Pavana treat it as more than one subject: jnana (knowing), vijnana (systematic science), and jivan-darshan (a view of how a life is to be lived). Bora’s “Bharatiya knowledge system” is the same house under another name. IKS is not “Hindu religion as a paper,” not “mythology instead of science,” and not “whatever any Indian thinks today.” A steel plant opened last year is Indian industry. A river-tank that still holds the monsoon, a grammar that still trains the tongue, or a medical idea that still names the body’s three doshas — those are IKS still at work.
Two streams run through the house. Shastra is the textual, pan-Indian stream: Veda and Vedanga (Unit 2), Ayurveda (Unit 3), the old universities (Unit 4), Panini or Aryabhata (Unit 5). Loka / parampara is the oral, local, craft-and-farm stream: how a Rajasthan village reads a cloud, how a Malabar sailor uses the monsoon, how an oran (sacred grove) is left uncut. Dharampal’s point in The Beautiful Tree is that this second stream was a real education, not a blank waiting for a colonial school. A good answer names both streams. If you praise only Sanskrit books, you have dropped the farmer. If you praise only the village and cannot name a shastra, you have dropped the paper’s later units.
Three traps. IKS is not the same as history of India: dates of kings are not the syllabus of this unit. It is not the same as Environment Studies: that paper studies the surrounding world with many modern disciplines; this paper asks how this civilisation knew land, water, forest and season. And it is not “anti-science.” Mahadevan’s book is written so that a science student can enter IKS without throwing the laboratory away. The job of Unit 1 is to name the system, then walk the land on which it grew.
| Word | What it names | What it is not |
|---|---|---|
| IKS | Organised Indian knowledge: jnana + vijnana + jivan-darshan, handed down as parampara | Not “any Indian opinion”; not only religion; not only the past |
| Shastra | Textual, pan-Indian disciplines (Veda, Ayurveda, grammar, astronomy…) | Not the only half of IKS |
| Loka / parampara | Oral, local, craft-farm-forest knowledge still in use | Not “superstition” as a dump-word |
| NEP 4.27 | Policy heading “Knowledge of India” — ancient contributions, tribal and indigenous learning, a sense of the country’s future | Not a separate exam paper |
2 Indigenous / traditional knowledge — definition
The syllabus prints one paired heading: Indigenous / Traditional Knowledge. Keep the pair; do not invent a war between the two words. Traditional knowledge (TK) is the know-how, skills and practices that a community develops, keeps, and hands to the next generation — often tied to a place, a language, a season and a craft. Indigenous knowledge stresses who holds it: the people of that soil — farmer, herder, fisher, forest-dweller, Adivasi community — not a visitor with a notebook. On this paper the definition is practical: knowledge born here, tested here, taught here, whether the teaching is a palm-leaf book or a grandmother’s rule about when to sow bajra.
Mahadevan’s introduction will not let you shrink TK to “old stories.” A stepwell, a tank bund, a loom pattern, a bone-setting method, a rain-sign from the direction of wind — these are knowledge because they work or they fail, and the community remembers which. Bora’s foundation-book treats this as Bharatiya knowing, not as a leftover. Dharampal shows that indigenous schooling (pathshala, village teacher, craft apprenticeship) was widespread before it was talked down. The definition therefore has four marks you can list in a viva: (1) it is collective, not one inventor’s patent; (2) it is handed on, often by mouth; (3) it is local to land and climate; (4) it is used, not only stored.
Two distinctions keep the definition tight. Traditional knowledge is not the same as custom: a wedding song may carry TK about season and grain, but “we have always done this” is not yet a definition. And TK is not the same as IKS as a whole. IKS is the larger system that includes TK and the shastric disciplines. If a short question asks “define indigenous / traditional knowledge,” give the four marks and one example from this unit (an oran, a johad, monsoon sailing, Kalibangan’s ploughed field). If it asks “define IKS,” start from lesson 1, then say TK is a main door of that house.

3 Scope of traditional knowledge
Scope means how wide the field is — what it includes, and where it stops for this unit. Traditional knowledge on this paper is not a footnote to one temple. It covers domains: food and farming; water; forest and pasture; minerals and metal; building and craft; healing (named fully in Unit 3); sky-calendar and season; language and memory; polity and the village. It covers space: Himalaya, river-plain, desert, coast, island-edge of the Bay and the Arabian Sea — Bharat Varsha as the next lessons map it. It covers time: from the Sindhu cities to a living oran outside a Rajasthan village. It covers who: rishi and shilpi, vaidya and sailor, woman saving seed, child learning a cattle-call. Scope is the map of the house, not a list of famous men (those wait in Unit 5).
Mahadevan’s book, after the key concepts, walks applications in science and engineering so that a student sees IKS is not only verse. Bose, Sen and Subbarayappa’s history of science fills the same scope from another door: town-planning, drainage, weights, bronze, iron, plants used as food and medicine. You do not dump Unit 3 Ayurveda here. You do say: healing-knowledge is inside the scope of TK; its gunas and doshas are a later chapter. You do not dump Unit 2 Veda here. You do say: the Vedic corpus is one great textual store of how this land was named and sung; its distinctive life is Unit 2.
Where scope stops, so that an answer does not balloon. This unit does not ask you to recite a Veda, a Gita sloka, a university plan, or Charaka’s life. It does not ask for the six Vedangas by heart. It does ask you to see that traditional knowledge is civilisational and ecological together: people, rivers, coasts, forests, minerals, climate. If a question is “scope of traditional knowledge,” write domains + space + time + who, then cut with one sentence: later units take shastra, health, schools and scholars in turn.
4 Importance of traditional knowledge
Importance is why the paper exists, not a sermon. NEP 2020, 4.27, asks that “Knowledge of India” include what ancient India contributed, what tribal and indigenous ways of learning still hold, and a sense of the country’s future — not a nostalgia shop. Mahadevan’s textbook exists because a required IKS course must give a student something to use: concepts that still name health, water, season, number, and design. Bora’s foundation-book puts the same stress: Bharatiya knowing is a ground to stand on, not a costume for a college function.
Five classroom reasons are enough, each with a Unit 1 example. Identity: a people who cannot name their own knowledge will borrow a story in which they were empty until someone else arrived. Use: johads, tanks, stepwells and Himalayan kuhls are water-knowledge matched to climate; they are not folklore. Sustainability: an oran left standing, a khejri uncut, a fish-net that waits out the spawning month — these are limits that keep the next harvest. Bose’s history of science shows the other face of use: weights, bricks, bronze, iron — traditional knowledge also built cities. Health and food: seasonal eating and later Ayurveda (Unit 3) start from the same land-lesson: the body is not separate from climate. Education: Dharampal’s indigenous school is a reminder that teaching did not begin in 1835. Unit 4 will name Nalanda; Unit 1 only needs the claim that knowledge was already a system.
Importance is not a licence to say “ancient India had already invented everything.” The paper’s own later units are honest: Ayurveda is a gift and a discipline with limits; universities rose and fell; scholars argued. A strong answer praises TK where it still solves a local problem (water in a dry district, a grove that holds birds, a calendar that times sowing) and leaves Gita, Ayurveda and the old universities to the units that own them. Unit 1 supplies the land and the definition; it does not finish the course.
| Why it matters | Unit 1 picture | What not to claim here |
|---|---|---|
| Identity | Bharat Varsha as a named land, not an empty map | Not “other civilisations knew nothing” |
| Use | Tanks, johads, ports, Harappan drainage | Not that every old custom still works |
| Sustainability | Sacred groves, seasonal fishing, tree-protection | Not a full pollution statute (that is Environment Studies) |
| Health and food | Climate and crop as one lesson | Not gunas, doshas, dinacharya — Unit 3 |
| Education | Parampara and indigenous school | Not Nalanda’s plan — Unit 4 |
5 Bharat Varsha — the land
Bharat Varsha is the old geographic name this paper uses for the land, not a slogan. In Puranic geography the inhabited world-island is Jambudvipa; one of its varshas (regions) is Bharata, lying south of the Himalaya and north of the ocean. The stock verse, taught from the Vishnu Purana, is: — the country north of the sea and south of Himadri is named Bharata, where the descendants of Bharata live. The name is tied to King Bharata (in one stream the son of Dushyanta and Shakuntala; in another, Bharata son of Rishabha). You need the shape, not a family-tree fight: a land locked by snow-mountain and salt-water, with rivers in between.
That shape is the “great natural heritage” the syllabus then unpacks: Himalayas, rivers, two great valleys, coasts, forests, minerals, climate. Bharat Varsha in this unit is civilisational geography, wider than the 1947 political map. The Sindhu cities of Harappa and Mohenjo-daro sit on the Indus; Kalibangan sits on the Ghaggar in northern Rajasthan. They belong to the paper’s “ancient Bharat Varsha” because the unit is about the old land-system, not a passport office. The Thar desert, the Aravalli, the peninsula south of the Vindhya, and the two long coasts are inside the same varsha. “India = only the Ganga plain” is too small for this heading.
Do not confuse Bharat Varsha with Hindustan as a later Persian-Urdu usage, or with the Republic’s official name alone. The paper’s word is the old one: a region in a sacred-and-physical map, whose people, rivers and forests are the next lessons. If a short question asks “what is Bharat Varsha,” give the Himalaya–ocean frame, the Vishnu Purana line in sense (you need not chant it), the name from King Bharata, and one sentence that the unit will now walk that land from mountain to coast.
| Name | Holds | Do not shrink it to |
|---|---|---|
| Jambudvipa | The wider ‘world-island’ in Puranic geography | Not a modern continent-name |
| Bharat Varsha | The region south of Himadri, north of the sea | Not only the Ganga doab; not only 1947 borders |
| Bharata (king) | The eponym — the land of his descendants | Not a Unit 5 “scholar” |
6 People of ancient Bharat Varsha
The syllabus asks for the people of ancient Bharat Varsha, not for one race-story. The land held many ways of living at once. In the northwest and along the Ghaggar, Harappan townspeople built baked-brick cities, kept standard weights, grew wheat, barley and cotton, and traded (Bose, Sen, Subbarayappa). In the early Vedic north-west, janas (peoples) herded and farmed along the Sapta-Sindhu. Later, in the Ganga valley, janapadas and the sixteen mahajanapadas turned wet rice and iron into towns and kingdoms. In the forests lived atavika communities the epics and the Arthashastra both name. On the coasts, sailors and fishers tied the peninsula to the sea. In the Brahmaputra valley, hill and river peoples made a civilisation the syllabus refuses to fold into Magadha.
What joins them is not one blood-type. It is the shared land-lesson: monsoon, river, forest edge, mountain pass. Languages were many — Indo-Aryan streams in the north, Dravidian in the south, Munda in parts of the forest belt, Tibeto-Burman on the eastern hills — and still the paper can say “people of Bharat Varsha,” because the unit is civilisational geography, not a census. Occupations already look like a knowledge-map: krishi (tillage), cattle, shilpa (craft), vanijya (trade), forest produce. Women saving seed and grinding grain are inside “people,” not a side note. Adivasi and pastoral groups are indigenous knowledge-holders, not leftovers outside the heading.
If asked “people of ancient Bharat Varsha,” give the several kinds of community: Harappan urban, Vedic jana, Ganga mahajanapada, forest and coast. Diversity is the fact — a single “ancient Indian type” is too small. Kalibangan (Hanumangarh district, Rajasthan) is a local door: plough-marks in the soil show farmers of this varsha already in the Harappan age.

7 The Himalayas and the rivers
The syllabus names our great natural heritage: the great Himalayas and the rivers as one gift. The Himalaya is not scenery on a calendar. It is a wall that turns wind into monsoon and shields the plains from the worst of the Central Asian cold; a tower of rivers; a store of timber, herb and mineral; and a sacred geography (Kailasa, the Char Dham of the north, countless tirthas). Classroom bands of the range: Himadri (Great Himalaya, snow peaks), Himachal (Lesser Himalaya), Shiwalik (outer foothills). Passes made people meet; snow made the summer flood; herbs made a medical shelf that Unit 3 will still be using.
Himalayan rivers of this paper’s map: Indus (Sindhu) and its Punjab brothers; Sarasvati / Ghaggar-Hakra in the old memory of the north-west (the dry bed still crosses northern Rajasthan); Ganga and Yamuna; Brahmaputra (Tsangpo in Tibet, then the great bend into Assam). These are snow-and-rain rivers. They built the plains on which cities could sit. Peninsular rivers are another family and must not be forgotten when the heading says “the rivers”: Narmada and Tapi running west; Mahanadi, Godavari, Krishna, Kaveri running east. They are mainly rain-fed. The Vindhya and the two Ghats steer them. A student who can name only Ganga has not read Bharat Varsha.
Traditional knowledge of rivers is already in the names: river as mother, as tirtha, as irrigation, as danger. Bose’s science history will later meet measurement and embankment; Unit 1 only needs the ecological fact. Flood is a teacher; drought is a teacher; the doab (land between two rivers) is the richest classroom of the north. In a dry state like Rajasthan the lesson is sharper: where Himalayan water does not arrive, people stored the rain (climate lesson). If asked “Himalayas and the rivers,” give wall + river-tower + three bands, name Sindhu, Ganga, Brahmaputra, add one peninsular river, and say why the mountain and the water together are “heritage,” not tourism.
| Thing | Job on this paper | Do not reduce it to |
|---|---|---|
| Himadri / Himachal / Shiwalik | Three bands of the Himalaya | Not “the hills near a hill-station” |
| Sindhu, Ganga, Brahmaputra | The three great Himalayan river-systems named with the valleys | Not three names for one river |
| Narmada, Godavari, Kaveri… | Peninsular, mostly rain-fed rivers | Not “unimportant because not Himalayan” |
8 Sindhu–Ganga valley and Brahmaputra valley
The syllabus prints two valley-civilisations on one line, then refuses to make them one story. Sindhu–Ganga is the long north-Indian corridor. First movement: the Sindhu (Harappan) cities — Harappa, Mohenjo-daro, Dholavira, Rakhigarhi, Lothal, and Rajasthan’s Kalibangan. Bose, Sen and Subbarayappa read them as science on the ground: grid streets, covered drains, a dock at Lothal, baked brick, bronze tools, cotton, wheat and barley, a still-unread script, standard weights. Mature Harappan is the usual classroom band, about 2600–1900 BCE. This is not “myth.” It is civic knowledge: a city that can take its own waste away has already thought.
Second movement of the same corridor: the Ganga valley after the forests are cleared and iron is in use. From about the sixth century BCE, mahajanapadas, wet rice, Northern Black Polished Ware, and Magadha as a political centre. The paper’s hyphen Sindhu–Ganga means this whole belt of alluvium, not “Harappa or Patna, pick one.” The people of lesson 6 farm and rule here; the rivers of lesson 7 lay the silt; the forests of lesson 10 are pushed back as the plough moves east. Traditional knowledge in this belt is urban and agrarian: drain and field, weight and monsoon-sowing.
The Brahmaputra valley is named separately so that you do not swallow the east into Magadha. High rain, a river that is road and flood, wet rice, silk (muga, eri), hills looking down on the valley. Old names: Pragjyotisha, Kamarupa; the Mahabharata remembers Bhagadatta of this eastern land. The valley ties Tibet, the eastern Himalaya, Bengal and the Bay. Its knowledge is riverine and forest-edge, not a copy of the Ganga doab. If the question lists both valleys, give Harappan civic science + Ganga second urbanisation for the first, and Kamarupa / high-rain river civilisation for the second. One sentence of contrast is extra marks: west-to-east the Sindhu–Ganga is a dry-to-wet corridor; the Brahmaputra is a wet world of its own.
| Valley | Civilisation-mark | Do not do this |
|---|---|---|
| Sindhu (Harappan) | Planned city, drain, weight, bronze, cotton; Kalibangan, Lothal | Do not call it “only Pakistan’s story”; the belt includes Rajasthan |
| Ganga | Iron, rice, mahajanapada, second urbanisation | Do not date it as the same century as Mature Harappan |
| Brahmaputra | Kamarupa / Pragjyotisha; high rain; river as road | Do not treat it as a suburb of Magadha |
9 Coastal plains
Our coastal plains are the third landscape after mountain and river-valley. A coastal plain is the low belt between the Ghats (or the eastern hills) and the sea. West: Gujarat, Konkan, Malabar, on the Arabian Sea. East: Coromandel, the Andhra–Odisha strip, the Bengal mouth, on the Bay of Bengal. The peninsula is a triangle of coasts, not a land that “ends” at the Vindhya. Rice, coconut, salt, fish, and the timber of the Ghats sit here. So do the ports through which Bharat Varsha met other shores.
Classroom ports (you need a handful, not a gazetteer): Lothal on the Gulf of Khambhat (Harappan dock — Bose’s civic science again); Bharukaccha (Bharuch); Sopara; Muziris on the Malabar; Kaveripattinam on the Kaveri mouth; Arikamedu near Pondicherry; Tamralipti in the Bengal east. Goods moved: cotton and later pepper, beads, ivory, teak; in return, gold, wine, horses, ideas. Traditional knowledge here is monsoon sailing — leaving with one wind, returning with the other — plus fishing calendars, boat-timber, and salt-pans. The sailor of the coast is as much a knowledge-holder as the Ganga ploughman.
Do not treat the coast as “south Indian extra.” Gujarat is west and Harappan as well as medieval. Bengal’s mouth is Brahmaputra-and-Ganga together meeting the Bay. Rajasthan is inland, but the paper still asks B.A. students here to know why a land with two long seas is not only a Himalayan story. If asked “coastal plains,” define the belt, name west and east, give two ports, and name one skill (monsoon navigation or fishing calendar).
| Coast | Sea | Ports to name |
|---|---|---|
| West | Arabian Sea — Gujarat, Konkan, Malabar | Lothal, Bharukaccha, Muziris |
| East | Bay of Bengal — Coromandel, Odisha, Bengal mouth | Kaveripattinam, Tamralipti |
| Skill | Monsoon sailing; fishing calendar; salt-pans | Not a tourist beach-list |
10 Forests and minerals
Our Nature: Forests and Minerals is the syllabus’s own pairing. Forest (aranya, vana) in this unit is not “empty jungle.” It is timber, elephant, honey, resin, lac, herb, pasture at the edge, and a place of tapas in the epics. The Arthashastra names officers of the forest; Ashoka’s edicts speak of living things; villages still keep a sacred grove — oran in Rajasthan, kavu in Kerala, devara kadu in Karnataka — a patch not cut because a deity and a water-table sit there. That grove is indigenous knowledge you can still walk to. The khejri of the Thar, protected in Bishnoi memory, is a tree-lesson of this desert state: shade, fodder, soil, and a limit on the axe.
Minerals are the other half of “nature” as wealth in the ground. Bose, Sen and Subbarayappa give the long story: Harappan bronze (copper plus tin), Rajasthan’s Khetri copper belt, later-Vedic and mahajanapada iron that opened the Ganga forest, gold and precious stones in the peninsula, lapis and other stones through Sindhu trade. The Arthashastra’s mine-superintendent (akaradhyaksha) is a reminder that extraction was already a state knowledge, not an accident. A mine is wealth in the ground with forest and river consequences — dust, fuel, water — so the pairing “forests and minerals” is one ecology, not two essay titles.
Traditional knowledge here is how to take without emptying: a closed season for hunting, a grove left standing, furnace-skill in copper, iron that becomes plough not only sword. If the question is “forests and minerals of ancient Bharat Varsha,” give use + conservation (grove) for forest, copper-iron-gold for mineral, and one line that both sit under “our nature.”
| Resource | Ancient use | Knowledge-limit |
|---|---|---|
| Forest | Timber, elephant, herb, honey, pasture | Sacred grove / closed season; not “cut all” |
| Copper / bronze | Tools, vessels; Khetri; Harappan bronze | Needs tin; trade as well as mine |
| Iron | Plough and axe that open the Ganga wood | Later than Mature Harappan as a mass metal |
| Gold, stones | Ornament, trade, ritual | Not the definition of “nature” by themselves |
11 Traditional knowledge of nature and climate
The last heading of the unit is ancient Indian traditional knowledge and wisdom about nature and climate. Nature here is not a park. It is the working whole already walked: mountain, river, valley, coast, forest, mineral, and the sky-clock that times them. Climate on this paper is first the monsoon — the south-west rain that is the agricultural year of most of Bharat Varsha, and the north-east rain that matters on the east coast. European four seasons are the wrong grid. The Indian civil year is commonly six ritus: vasanta (spring), grishma (summer), varsha (rains), sharad (autumn), hemanta (early winter), shishira (late winter), turning through two ayanas (sun’s north and south path). Festivals, sowing and cattle-move sit on that clock, not on a tourist calendar.
Wisdom means rules that keep people alive in that clock. Water: store the rain where the Himalaya does not send a river — johad and tank in Rajasthan, stepwell, southern eri, Bihar’s ahar-pyne, Himalayan kuhl. Field: plough after the sign, not after a wish; nakshatra-almanac and village sky-reading (wind, insect, cloud) are TK, later written in books such as the agricultural and jyotisha tradition. Kalibangan’s furrow is already a climate-answer: this soil, this rain, this plough. Living things: closed fishing months, sacred groves, the khejri left standing, the peepal and banyan as shade-wells. Body: eat with the season — Unit 3 will name this as ritucharya; Unit 1 only needs the land-reason: a hot dry month is not a wet month in the stomach either.
Bose’s history of science and Mahadevan’s applications chapter both refuse to call this “unscientific.” It is local science: observation handed down. It can err; it can be improved; it is still knowledge. Do not dump full Ayurveda, Vastu manuals, or Aryabhata’s astronomy here (Units 3 and 5). Do write one exam paragraph that ties the whole unit: IKS is a system; TK is its living door; Bharat Varsha is the house-site; Himalaya and river, two valleys, coasts, forest and mineral are the rooms; climate-wisdom is how the household still keeps time. That paragraph is Unit 1, complete.
| Clock / rule | What it times or protects | Later unit, if any |
