Unit II · Listening skills
The official heading is Listening skills: benefits of effective listening; barriers to listening; listening to announcements (railway, bus station, airport, sports, podcasts). Unit I named the cycle and noise. This unit trains the ear. Speaking back is Unit III; reading a page is Unit IV.
Hearing is not listening. Active listening is a skill in Hasson, Hargie, Kumar–Pushpalata and Denny. An announcement is a public oral message you must catch without a second chance — completeness and concreteness from the 7 Cs, used by the ear. Crystal frames the podcast as digital speech you can pause. Models below are classroom pieces, not copied railway scripts.
1 Listening is not hearing
Hearing is a bodily event: sound reaches the ear. Listening is a communication skill: you attend, interpret, and respond. Kumar and Pushpalata mark that cut on the first page of their listening chapter. Hargie treats listening as skilled work — attend, follow, show you have understood — not a polite freeze of the face. Hasson puts listening before speaking: if you do not receive, your reply is a second monologue. Crystal: spoken language is built for a listener; without one, speech is only noise in the air.
Active listening is listening that shows itself. The receiver looks (without staring), does not steal the turn, checks a fact (“Friday, not Thursday?”), and gives a usable response. Passive hearing is sitting in a lecture while the mind is on a phone. Selective listening takes only what flatters the listener. Pseudo-listening is the nod that hides absence. Benefits, barriers, and announcements all assume this cut: the ear is not enough.
Hearing is automatic; listening is chosen and trained. Unit I’s feedback is, in the ear, this skill.
| Kind | What happens | Picture |
|---|---|---|
| Active | Attend, check, respond | “Friday, not Thursday?” |
| Passive | Sound in, mind elsewhere | Phone in a lecture |
| Selective | Only the pleasing part | “Exam postponed” — miss “Semester III only” |
| Pseudo | Nod that hides absence | Eyes on the speaker, mind on a message |
2 Benefits of effective listening
Effective listening is listening that gets the meaning the sender sent, and lets the sender know it arrived. The official bullet is benefits. Hasson: you learn, you avoid a fight, you make the other person feel received. Denny: in work, the listener catches the real request and does not waste a second visit. Ellis: professionals who listen climb faster because they do not rebuild jobs from rumours. Hargie: accurate listening is the base of questioning, explaining and helping — the rest of his handbook sits on this floor.
Six classroom benefits. Accuracy: the scholarship date is Friday, not “sometime this week.” Time: one clear hearing beats three confused mails. Relation: a classmate who is heard will hear you. Safety: a station announcement about a platform change is a life-skill on this unit’s next lessons. Study: a lecture and an oral presentation both punish the student who only heard the sound. Employability: the course objective and NEP line — interviews and clients reward the listener. A benefit is not “listening is good.” Name what it saves: error, time, face, or a missed train.
Keep the cut with Unit I. Importance of communication is the whole house. Benefits of listening are what the ear gives that house.
| Benefit | What you keep | If you only hear |
|---|---|---|
| Accuracy | The real date, name, platform | You act on a guess |
| Time | One trip, one mail | Three corrections |
| Relation | Trust; a turn for you later | A fight about “you never listen” |
| Safety / travel | The changed platform, the delay | The wrong train |
| Study / work | The task as set | The wrong file, a failed presentation |
| Employability | The real request in an interview | A second visit, a missed client |
3 Barriers to listening
Barriers to listening are Unit 1’s barriers specialised for the ear. Kumar lists them as physical (fan, crowd, a bad loudspeaker), physiological (fatigue, hearing difficulty), psychological (prejudice, anger, daydream, the urge to reply before the sentence ends), linguistic (an accent, a technical word, a language you only half know), and inattention — including the phone. Hargie adds interrupting and “rehearsing” your answer while the other is still speaking. Hasson adds the closed body: arms, eyes, and chair already saying no.
On this unit a special barrier is announcement noise: echo on a platform, two speakers at once, a name that sounds like another, speed. Pseudo-listening is a barrier you yourself build. Selective listening is a barrier when you hear only “exam postponed” and miss “for Semester III only.” Cultural barrier: you expect a greeting before a request; the clerk starts with the fact; you miss the fact because you were waiting for the greeting.
A short answer names the cluster and one repair: move closer, ask a check, write the number down, wait until the sentence ends, put the phone away. The ear-examples follow: railway, bus, airport, sports, podcast.
| Listening barrier | Repair |
|---|---|
| Fan, crowd, echo, two speakers | Face the speaker; move; write the number |
| Fatigue, hearing difficulty | Front seat; written support; shorter turns |
| Anger, daydream, rehearsing your reply | Wait till the sentence ends; check one fact |
| Accent, unknown word, two languages mixed | Ask for a repeat; read the board |
| Phone / headphones / pseudo-nod | Put the phone away; look up |
4 How to listen to an announcement
The syllabus then drills one public genre: listening to announcements — railway, bus station, airport, sports, podcasts. An announcement is oral-verbal communication with a crowd, often without a chance to ask. Purpose is usually to inform and instruct (Unit 1). Channel is a loudspeaker, a coach’s shout, or a recorded voice. Noise is built in. The 7 Cs still apply: a good announcement is complete (what, when, where, who) and concrete (platform 4, not “nearby”).
A method, before the five scenes. (1) Orient: look up; stop your own talk. (2) Catch the frame: train/bus/flight/match/show name, number, time. (3) Catch the change: delayed, cancelled, platform changed, extra over, new guest. (4) Catch the action: proceed to, wait at, stand behind. (5) Write one line or repeat it to a companion — that is feedback to yourself. If you miss it, do not invent: read a board, ask a clerk (Unit 3’s asking for information).
You are not asked to enjoy the voice. You are asked to leave with a number and a verb. The next lessons give one model for each official scene. Names and numbers are classroom inventions; the shape is what you must catch.
5 Railway and bus-station announcements
A railway announcement typically names the train number and name, the origin–destination, the platform, and a status (arriving, delayed, cancelled, rescheduled). Listen for the number twice: 20498 can sound like 20489 in echo. A bus-station announcement (RSRTC or a private stand) names the route, gate or stand, departure time, and sometimes a type (ordinary, express). The benefit of effective listening here is literal: the right coach, the right gate.
Barriers: two trains called together, a Hindi–English mix you only half follow, a vendor’s shout, your own headphones. Strategy: face the speaker; write the platform; if unsure, ask — Unit 3. Completeness fails when the voice says “the train is delayed” and never says by how long. That missing C is why boards exist beside speakers.
May I have your attention please. Train number 20498, the Bikaner–Delhi Intercity, scheduled to arrive at 14:10, is delayed by forty minutes. It will now arrive at 14:50 on platform 3. Passengers are requested not to cross the track.
Attention please. RSRTC express bus for Jaipur, departure 15:30, will leave from gate number 6. Passengers with tickets for the 15:30 Jaipur express, proceed to gate 6. The 16:00 ordinary bus to Nagaur will leave from gate 2.

6 Airport, sports and podcasts
An airport announcement adds a flight number, destination, gate, and a status (boarding, last call, delayed, cancelled, baggage belt). Security instructions are commands: liquids, trays, phones. Listen for the flight number as you listened for the train number. A sports announcement (a college field, a stadium, a radio cricket update) names the event, the score or result, and sometimes a request to the crowd (stay off the track, collect a prize at the pavilion). Numbers again: overs, goals, lane, jersey.
A podcast is a recorded audio programme you choose and can pause — unlike a station speaker. Crystal’s digital language chapter is the frame: speech on a file, often informal, sometimes with a host and a guest. Effective listening here is closer to a lecture: gist, then detail; names of people and books; a task if the teacher set one. Barriers: 1.5× speed, background music, an episode you play while scrolling (pseudo-listening). Strategy: one job per play; note three facts; rewind a name. The college project option of a short audio or video is this skill on the other side of the microphone.
If a short announcement is printed, the answer is in the numbers and the verb: delayed / gate 12 / last call / India 245 for 6. Do not “interpret” a feeling the voice did not state. The ear takes what was said.
छोटी घोषणा छापी जाए तो उत्तर संख्या और क्रिया में है: delayed / gate 12 / last call / India 245 for 6।
