Unit 5 · Voices from India

Two Indian critical voices, not poems. Vinay Dharwadker, “English in India and Indian Literature in English: The Early History, 1579–1834,” Comparative Literature Studies 39.2 (2002): 93–119 — Sections I, II and IV only (skip III in the photocopy). Vandana Shiva, Staying Alive: Women, Ecology and Development (Kali for Women, 1988) — chapters 2 and 4 only: “Science, Nature and Gender”; “Women in the Forest.” A twenty-mark question can take one essay; an eight-mark question wants one claim plus two names or one Chipko fact.

Vinay Dharwadker का निबंध, 1579–1834 — केवल खंड I, II, IV (III छोड़ो)। 4: “Science, Nature and Gender”; “Women in the Forest।”

1 Dharwadker · Section I · locating

Section I locates Indian-English literature in history instead of in a schoolroom myth that it begins with Macaulay (1835) or with a sudden colonial gift. The first text in English by an author of Indian origin is Din Muhammad (Dean Mahomet), The Travels of Dean Mahomet, Cork, 1794: an epistolary travel book by a Patna-born man who had served the East India Company’s army, emigrated to Ireland, married Jane Daly, and wrote for Anglo-Irish subscribers. Dharwadker’s questions are the unit’s method: how did he get English, literacy, and European manners before he left India? He is not an anomaly. He is a composite made by several histories at once (Mughal service elite, Company army, interracial marriage, the social history of English on the subcontinent).

When a people write literature in a language historically alien to them, three conditions are necessary: contact with native users of that language; literacy in it; acculturation to the ways of life it carries. That is why the history of Indian writing in English must start with the history of English in India, and why that history is not the same as English in England or in Canada or Nigeria. Unit 1’s word acculturation is here a historical machine, not a slogan.

Din Muhammad (Dean Mahomet), The Travels of Dean Mahomet,

2 Dharwadker · Section II · 1579, Stephens, Fitch

Section II breaks the “Company first” commonplace. English on Indian soil begins two decades before the East India Company. Father Thomas Stephens, an English Jesuit, reaches Goa in 1579 (the syllabus date). He lives decades in Salsette and Goa, writes a Marathi–Konkani Christian Purana (printed 1640), and does not publish English books — only letters home. Richard Hakluyt prints the 1579 letter in Principal Navigations (1589): first printed English account of an Englishman’s India. Ralph Fitch, merchant, reaches Goa 1583 with Newbury, Leedes, Story; the Portuguese jail them; Stephens interprets — the first small community of English speakers on Indian soil. Fitch alone returns (1591); his public narrative in Hakluyt (1599–1600) is the first English India-text meant for print. Missionary and merchant: two agent-types that will dominate the next centuries.

Between the 1580s and the 1780s the British archive of India grows in three genres Stephens and Fitch already used: the personal letter, the epistolary eyewitness account, the formal travel narrative. Din Muhammad later writes inside that travelogue form and turns it: an Indian understanding of India as a polite counter-discourse. The first Indian English book is already a counter-text. After about 1660, under Cromwell and Charles II, Company factories finally hold a stable English-speaking community on the coasts, and English becomes a continuous practical medium — still 175 years before colonial English schools. Two-mark names: Stephens 1579, Fitch, Hakluyt, 1660, Dean Mahomet 1794.

3 Four zones, then Section IV · first writers

Section III of the essay (four zones) is not on the photocopy the syllabus names — it asks I, II and IV. Still learn the four names: they explain how English leaked into Indian lives before government schools, powered by a prior literate Indian multilingualism (Mughal Persian, Sanskrit, regional languages). Employment: dubhashis (two-language men) as clerk-interpreters, as personal baniyas, later as Orientalist “native informants”; also domestic service and the Company army. Din Muhammad, C. V. Boriah, Rammohun Roy all meet English here. After 1835 the dubhashi yields to the English-educated middle class. Marriage and family: Englishmen, few Englishwomen; mixed children raised Christian and Anglophone — Derozio’s parentage is the classroom example inside the period. Religious conversion: missions (Company ban until 1813); conversion as Europeanisation. Friendship and social relations: Godfrey Evan Baker and Din Muhammad; Roy and the Unitarians. Zones fail where prior Indian literacy is absent. Do not pad an answer with later names this essay only mentions in passing.

Section IV is the first three writers, then the thesis. Din Muhammad: Patna, camp-follower to Godfrey Evan Baker from age eleven, Ireland 1784, school, marriage, Travels 1794 — formed in employment, friendship, marriage, conversion. C. V. Boriah: Telugu Vaishnava brahman, dubhashi to Colin Mackenzie, “Account of the Jains” (c. 1803, printed 1809); multilingual already. Rammohun Roy: Persian and Sanskrit first; Company revenue service; English “on the job” with John Digby; from 1815 a reformer in several languages — Upanishads, sati debates, Precepts of Jesus. All three write instrumental prose with literary control; all enter English from outside full colonial schooling. The strong close: Indian writing in English is not solely a colonial product, not only mimicry, not only “Western stimulus, Indian response.” Precolonial and noncolonial multilingualism already leaks through the first texts. That sentence is the twenty-mark ending.

Boriah: तेलुगु वैष्णव ब्राह्मण, Colin Mackenzie के dubhashi, “Account of the Jains”; पहले से बहुभाषी।

4 Shiva · Chapter 2 · Science, Nature and Gender

Shiva (b. 1952), physicist and activist; Staying Alive (Kali for Women, 1988) is the set ecofeminist book (Unit 1, lesson 9). Chapter 2 attacks the myth that modern science is neutral and universal. She reads Baconian method and industrial development as a patriarchal project: nature is female matter to be interrogated and used; women, like forests and rivers, become resource. Reductionism breaks living systems into parts so that a part can be owned, measured, and sold. Two kinds of fact, two kinds of rationality: the laboratory’s isolated unit versus the peasant woman’s knowledge of a whole field. Maldevelopment (chapter 1’s word, useful here) is growth that kills the feminine principle of regeneration — Prakriti as living nature, not dead stock.

Do not write “science is bad.” Write: this science claims universality while serving profit, and it codes nature and women as the same kind of silence. Link Unit 1: ecofeminism is the joint domination of women and of nature. A two-mark line: reductionism; science as patriarchy’s project; Prakriti versus resource.

5 Shiva · Chapter 4 · Women in the Forest

Chapter 4 reads the forest as Aranyani, the feminine principle of diversity, then tracks how colonial and “scientific” forestry wanted timber, revenue, and the uniform “miracle” tree — pine in the Himalaya, eucalyptus or teak on the plains: one commercial species in place of mixed oak and village commons. Commons were renamed wasteland. Women’s expertise — fodder, fuel, soil, mixed species — did not count as fact.

Chipko is the exam scene. Hold the facts: March 1974, Reni village, Chamoli district, Garhwal. Contractors came to fell the forest; Gaura Devi led the village women to the trees; they held the trunks (chipko = to stick, to cling). Shiva reads this as knowledge, not a pretty hug: the mixed Himalayan forest feeds cattle and binds soil; a pine or eucalyptus plantation does not feed a household. Afforestation that plants one cash species deepens both the ecological crisis and the survival crisis. Recovering the forest means recovering diversity and the commons, not breeding super-trees.

Keep chapter 2 and chapter 4 as one argument: reductionist science (ch. 2) becomes masculinist forestry (ch. 4). Exam error: telling Chipko as a cute tree-hug story without naming scientific forestry, commons, and women’s knowledge. A twenty-mark Shiva answer should move Aranyani → colonial forest department → Reni 1974 / Gaura Devi → diversity against the miracle tree.
