Concepts notes
ReadyConcepts is a topic in Contemporary World Literature (Units) for B.A. English (CBCS 2025–28), Faculty of Arts at Maharaja Ganga Singh University, Bikaner.
The official syllabus prints one heading: Introducing Multiculturalism, Diaspora, Globalization, Hybridity, Alienation, Acculturation, Assimilation,…
Unit 1 · Concepts
The official syllabus prints one heading: Introducing Multiculturalism, Diaspora, Globalization, Hybridity, Alienation, Acculturation, Assimilation, Identity, Ecofeminism. These nine words are not nine separate papers. They are the tools this course uses to read writing after the Second World War — poetry, prose, a novel, a play, and the two Indian voices in Unit 5. The learning outcomes name the same cluster and add displacement and identity crisis: people and languages move; belonging splits.
Classroom meanings: Ashcroft, Griffiths and Tiffin, Post-Colonial Studies: The Key Concepts (2013); Bhabha, The Location of Culture (1994); Stuart Hall on diaspora identity; Appadurai on global “scapes”; Berry’s four acculturation paths; d’Eaubonne (1974) and Vandana Shiva, Staying Alive (1988) — Unit 5 sets chapters 2 and 4. Examples use only texts on this paper.
Section A will ask two two-mark items from this unit (one of the paper’s ten short questions). Section B wants about 200 words with internal choice. Section C can set a 20-mark essay, about 500 words. A two-mark answer names the term, gives one clean definition, and one set-text example. An eight-mark answer adds a distinction (acculturation is not assimilation; hybridity is not multiculturalism). A long answer walks two or three texts through one concept.
1 Multiculturalism
Multiculturalism is the claim that one country, city or classroom can hold several cultures, languages, religions and histories with equal public respect. It refuses the older demand that newcomers melt into a single national type. Canada made multiculturalism official state policy in 1971; the word then travelled into literary study. Charles Taylor’s “politics of recognition” says a culture is damaged when the state pretends it is invisible. Ashcroft’s glossary treats the term as a politics of co-presence, not as a taste for “colourful” food.
On this paper the word is a reading method. Amy Tan’s “Mother Tongue” keeps more than one English in one American family: the “broken” English of the mother and the public English of the daughter. Judith Ortiz Cofer’s “Latin Women Pray” places Latina Catholic women before a God imagined as male and Anglo; two cultures share a pew and do not fuse. Maya Angelou’s “Still I Rise” insists that a Black woman’s body and voice belong in the same nation that tried to shrink them. Kishwar Naheed’s “Talking to Myself” is Pakistani feminist speech inside a Muslim society that already contains more than one script for a woman’s life. None of these poems ask the “other” voice to disappear.
Keep two traps apart. Multiculturalism is not the same as hybridity. Multiculturalism pictures distinct groups living side by side (a salad bowl). Hybridity pictures mixing at the level of the self, the language, or the form (a new taste, not two leaves in one bowl). Multiculturalism is also not automatic harmony. Cofer’s women pray and still wait; Angelou rises against a history of insult. If a two-mark question says “multiculturalism,” write: many cultures, equal respect, no melting into one; then name Tan or Cofer.
2 Diaspora
Diaspora (Greek: a scattering of seed) names a people living away from a remembered homeland, keeping a shared memory of that place, a sense of not being fully at home in the host country, and often a myth of return. William Safran’s 1991 checklist is the classroom test: dispersal, memory, incomplete acceptance, idea of a true home, duty toward it, and a group consciousness built on that story. Stuart Hall’s point is sharper for literature: diaspora identity is not a suitcase of unchanged custom. It is made in the new place, looking both ways.
Agha Shahid Ali’s “Postcard from Kashmir” is the set lyric of this term. The speaker holds a four-by-six-inch picture of the valley and says that card is the closest he will ever be to home. Distance is not tourism. It is a Kashmiri life written from elsewhere. Shirley Lim’s “My Father’s Sadness” carries a Chinese-Malaysian father’s gloom into another English. Khaled Hosseini’s The Kite Runner (the PDF prints Hossaini; the author is Hosseini) follows Afghan lives from Kabul to California: war, guilt, and a past that will not stay in one country. Amy Tan writes Chinese-American speech. Cofer writes a Puerto Rican–American pew. Displacement — the learning-outcome word — is the forced or painful side of the same map: Amir and Baba leave because Kabul is no longer livable, not because they chose a holiday. (Subramaniam’s “Home,” later in Unit 2, is about belonging in a body, not about leaving a country — do not file it here as diaspora.)
Do not call every journey a diaspora. Exile is often one person’s political banishment; diaspora is a community’s long scatter. A migrant worker may later become diasporic if children inherit the two-home story; a weekend trip does not. Hybridity can grow inside a diaspora (new language, new food), but the two words are not twins. If the question is “diaspora,” start with scatter + homeland memory + incomplete belonging, then Ali’s postcard or Hosseini’s California.
3 Globalization
Globalization is the thickening of worldwide ties after 1945, speeding up from the 1970s and again after 1989: goods, money, news, people and stories cross borders faster than older empires moved them. It is not only trade. Arjun Appadurai names five “scapes” so the word does not stay a newspaper slogan: ethnoscapes (tourists, refugees, workers), mediascapes (images and news), technoscapes (machines and the internet), financescapes (capital), ideoscapes (rights, freedom, democracy as travelling words). A poem written in Srinagar, a story printed in Tokyo, a novel of Kabul read in Bikaner — that classroom itself is a small ethnoscape and mediascape.
This paper is a map of that traffic. Haruki Murakami’s “Birthday Girl” is Japanese urban fiction that now belongs to a world market of translation. Gabriel García Márquez’s “The Handsomest Drowned Man in the World” travelled with the Latin American boom into English. Pablo Neruda and Wisława Szymborska are Nobel voices from Chile and Poland sitting beside Seamus Heaney’s Irish farm and Maya Angelou’s American South. English here is a vehicle, not a birthright: Dharwadker’s Unit 5 essay (sections I, II, IV) tracks how English entered India long before this “contemporary” moment; the later global syllabus still rides that language. Hosseini writes Afghan memory in American English for a world readership.
Globalization is not a synonym for peace, and it is not the same as multiculturalism. Multiculturalism asks how groups share one state. Globalization asks how the world is wired. Critics call the wiring uneven: some languages and markets speak louder. A village in Márquez is changed by a body that washes in from elsewhere; a wish in Murakami is spoken into an anonymous city. If asked for a definition, write: intensified worldwide flow of people, media, money and ideas after the War; then point to the syllabus itself, or to Murakami / Márquez / Hosseini as texts that move.
Gabriel García Márquez की “The Handsomest Drowned Man in the World” लैटिन अमेरिकी बूम के साथ अंग्रेज़ी में आई।
4 Hybridity
Hybridity is mixing that makes a new form — of language, identity, ritual or genre — rather than a pure return to origin. In biology a hybrid is the offspring of two kinds. Homi K. Bhabha takes the word into culture: the colony never simply copies the colonizer. The copy is slanted; it talks back. That in-between is his third space. Mimicry is the almost-the-same that is not quite: the English-educated subject who wears the master’s speech and disturbs it. Ashcroft lists hybridity as a key postcolonial concept, not as an insult meaning “impure.”
Wole Soyinka’s The Lion and the Jewel is the set drama of the clash that produces hybridity. Lakunle the schoolteacher recites Western “progress” and wants Sidi without bride-price; Baroka the Bale defends custom and still uses cunning that is modern in its way; Sidi is pulled between magazine fame and village power. The play does not award a clean victory to “tradition” or “the West.” It stages a Yoruba town already crossed by school, camera and road. Amy Tan’s English is hybrid at the level of the sentence: public grammar and the mother’s speech inhabit one essay. Cofer’s Latin women pray in a church whose God has been pictured as someone else’s face. Hosseini’s Amir writes Afghan guilt in a Californian life; the self is two rooms.
Hybridity is not multiculturalism (side-by-side groups). It is not assimilation (one side erased). It is the third thing. A two-mark answer: cultural mixing that produces a new, in-between identity or form; Bhabha’s third space; Soyinka or Tan. Do not use the word as a synonym for “modern” or “confused.” Confusion may be the feeling; hybridity is the structure.
The Lion and the Jewel
5 Alienation
Alienation is the condition of being a stranger to one’s work, one’s society, one’s language, or one’s own life. Marx used the word for the factory worker cut off from the product and from other people. Literary study keeps the wider sense: a person is present in a place and still does not belong. The feeling may be city loneliness, racial exclusion, gendered silencing, or the quiet after a death. It is an inner weather, not only a ticket out of a country.
Set texts keep giving the mood a body. Agha Shahid Ali looks at Kashmir on a card and cannot step into it — belonging minus presence. Murakami’s “Birthday Girl” walks an ordinary job, a closed room, a wish spoken to a stranger: urban life without a village of names. Neruda’s “A Dog Has Died” is grief that makes the human world look thinner; companionship is gone, so the speaker is oddly alone among people. Szymborska’s “A Great Number” sets one limited life against the countless lives she will never know — a philosophical alienation from the many. Heaney’s “Blackberry-Picking” is smaller: the child learns that hunger and rot share the same fruit; innocence is estranged from its own hope. Naheed talking to herself implies that the public room has no ear. Angelou’s poem answers a history that tried to alienate a people from dignity.
Do not collapse alienation into diaspora. A diasporic writer may be alienated, but a person can be alienated at home (Naheed; Heaney’s farm; Murakami’s city). Exile is a legal or political fact; alienation is a relation of feeling and structure. Identity crisis (lesson 8) is the scramble for a name; alienation is the chill of not fitting the names on offer. Two marks: estrangement from work, society, language or self; then Ali, Murakami or Neruda.
6 Acculturation
Acculturation is the change that follows prolonged contact between cultures. The classic 1936 definition (Redfield, Linton, Herskovits) says that when groups meet continuously, one or both alter their patterns. The weaker or smaller group usually shifts more, but the host is not frozen. John W. Berry’s later model is what examiners want named. He sets two questions: Do I keep my heritage culture? Do I seek a relationship with the larger society? The answers give four strategies: integration (yes, yes: keep both), assimilation (no, yes: drop heritage, take host), separation (yes, no: keep heritage, avoid host), marginalization (no, no: lose both). Acculturation is the umbrella process. The four names are paths under it.
Amy Tan’s essay is a lesson in acculturation at the level of speech. The daughter moves through American school and magazine English; the mother keeps a Chinese-inflected English that stores knowledge the daughter once undervalued. That is not a finished melting. It is contact, shame, translation, and a late respect — closer to integration than to erasure. Cofer’s Latin women inhabit a church and a language that are already American and still theirs. Hosseini’s Amir becomes a writer in the United States while the Kabul of his childhood keeps arriving in memory and plot; Baba’s American gas-station life is acculturation as labour. Lim’s father carries an older sadness into a new linguistic house.
The exam mix-up is almost always this pair: acculturation versus assimilation. Assimilation is one of Berry’s four. If you write “acculturation means becoming American,” you have named only the assimilative path and missed Tan’s two Englishes. Two marks: cultural change after sustained contact; Berry’s four; Tan or Hosseini. Eight marks: explain the two questions and why Tan is contact, not simple surrender.
| Berry’s question | Keep heritage? | Join host society? | Name |
|---|---|---|---|
| Integration | yes | yes | two cultures in one life (Tan’s two Englishes, late respect) |
| Assimilation | no | yes | heritage dropped; host taken |
| Separation | yes | no | heritage kept; host held off |
| Marginalization | no | no | neither culture holds the person |
7 Assimilation
Assimilation is the path on which a minority takes the language, dress, names and public manners of the dominant group and lets the heritage culture thin or vanish. The old American metaphor is the melting pot: many metals, one alloy. Multiculturalism answers with a salad bowl: pieces stay distinct. In Berry’s grid, assimilation is “no” to heritage and “yes” to the host. It can be chosen (for safety, work, love of a new tongue) or forced (schools that punish a mother tongue, states that ban a dress).
On this paper, assimilation is often the pressure a text resists. Tan’s younger self wanted the mother’s English to sound “normal”; the essay’s mature voice refuses that shame and revalues the “broken” tongue — a turn away from assimilation toward integration. Cofer’s title already marks a group (“Latin Women”) that has not dissolved into unmarked American churchgoing. Angelou will not assimilate into a story of the defeated. Hosseini’s Amir learns American rooms and still has to return, in plot and conscience, to Kabul; full melt is not available. Soyinka’s Lakunle is the comic warning: borrowed progress that sneers at bride-price can be mimicry without wisdom, not a finished modern self.
Rule for the script: assimilation is a kind of acculturation, not a synonym for it. Acculturation = contact and change (four paths). Assimilation = one path, erasure toward the host. Hybridity keeps mixture visible; assimilation tries to hide it. Two marks: minority absorbed into the dominant culture; melting pot; contrast Tan’s later respect for mother tongue. Do not write that globalization “is” assimilation. Global flows can also produce hybrid and multicultural forms.
8 Identity
Identity is the answer a person or a group gives to “who am I / who are we?” It is built from memory, language, gender, race, nation, faith, class and work — not from one of these alone. Stuart Hall’s sentence is the one to carry into Section C: identity is not an essence already inside us, waiting to be found. It is produced in narrative. We are positioned by stories (colony, family, state, market) and we also position ourselves inside them. That is why identity on this paper is rarely a badge. It is a struggle.
Maya Angelou’s “Still I Rise” is identity spoken against a history that named Black women as less: the poem answers with body, laugh, ancestors and a future tense. Kishwar Naheed’s “Talking to Myself” is a woman’s identity made in a private voice because the public script is too small. Agha Shahid Ali’s identity is Kashmiri and diasporic at once — the postcard is a cracked mirror. Subramaniam’s “Home” treats identity as a question about place. Hosseini’s Amir is the long example of identity crisis (the extra phrase in the learning outcomes): son, friend, betrayer, refugee, American writer, Afghan with an unpaid debt. Soyinka’s Sidi is courted as jewel, as magazine cover, as wife — names that do not match. Pamuk’s “Distant Relations” works through family memory and the self that relatives invent. Márquez’s drowned man is given an identity by a village that needs one: they name him Esteban and are changed by the name they chose.
Keep the cluster tidy. Identity is the name-struggle. Alienation is the feeling of not fitting. Diaspora is the scatter that often splits identity. Hybridity is one outcome of the split (a third self). Acculturation is the contact-process that rewrites identity. A two-mark line: identity is a produced sense of self and group, not a fixed soul; Hall; Angelou or Amir. A long answer should pick one axis (gender, nation, language) and stay with it, not list all nine terms.
9 Ecofeminism
Ecofeminism argues that the domination of women and the domination of nature follow the same logic. Both are treated as resource, body, silence. Françoise d’Eaubonne coined écoféminisme in 1974. On this paper the set voice is Vandana Shiva, Staying Alive (1988). Unit 5 walks only chapters 2 and 4: science is not a neutral tool; forests and women’s knowledge are broken into “resources.” For this unit hold the definition, the 1974 name, and Chipko as the exam example of women defending a forest. Do not retell those chapters here.
Keep three words apart. Feminism without ecology can stay with law, vote and the household. Ecocriticism reads literature and environment and need not put gender at the centre. Ecofeminism joins the two dominations. Heaney’s berries and Neruda’s dog are nature lyrics; they become ecofeminist only if an answer joins land (or creature) to gendered power. That join, on this paper, is Shiva. Two marks: women and nature oppressed by one logic; d’Eaubonne 1974; Chipko or reductionism. Do not write “ecofeminism means women love trees.”
10 Keep these pairs apart
Unit 1 is a net. One concept catches another. The marks go to the student who can unhook the pairs the paper itself lists together.
