Unit 2 · Natural resources

This unit covers natural resources: renewable and non-renewable resources; natural resources and associated problems; forest resources (use and over-exploitation, deforestation, timber exploitation, mining, dams and their effects on forests and tribal people); water resources (over-utilisation of surface and ground water, floods, drought, conflicts over water, dams — benefits and problems); mineral resources (use and exploitation, environmental effects of extracting and using minerals); food resources (world food problems, changes caused by agriculture and overgrazing, effects of modern agriculture, fertilizer and pesticide problems, water logging, salinity); energy resources (growing energy needs, renewable and non-renewable energy, alternate energy); land resources (land as a resource, land degradation, man-induced landslides, soil erosion and desertification); the role of an individual in conservation; and equitable use of resources for a sustainable system.

1 What a natural resource is

A natural resource is a material or a form of energy that comes from nature and that human life, farms, industry and culture actually use: air, water, soil, forests, wildlife, minerals, fossil fuels, sunlight, wind. A thing becomes a resource when it is drawn into use. Rain in the cloud is part of a cycle; rain lifted into a canal or a tank is a resource. This unit sits here because civilisation rests on these stocks, and the crisis of the paper is mostly the wrong spending of them.

Books group resources in more than one way. Biotic resources come from living sources — forests, crops, fish, livestock. Abiotic resources are non-living — water, minerals, metals, fossil fuels. Another cut is how they form: solar, wind, water, land, mineral. The cut this syllabus names first is renewable and non-renewable. Classification is not a list of names. It is a map of how fast a stock can be spent.

Books also split resources by availability. An actual resource is already in use — a working well, a felled teak, coal in a furnace. A potential resource is known but not yet drawn at scale — a desert’s solar field, a wind corridor, a mineral still in the hill. Sunlight is often called inexhaustible on a human clock; coal is exhaustible. The cut matters because a potential stock can be spent before a poor community ever sees it, and an actual stock can be ruined by over-use.

A resource is not the same as a raw material on a factory list. Soil, a fishery, a sacred grove and clean air are resources even when they are not sold. Man-made goods (steel, a dam) rest on natural stocks. This unit’s job is to name the stocks, the offtake and the associated crisis — not to turn the student into a mining engineer. Classification (biotic–abiotic, renewable–non-renewable, actual–potential) is only a map of how fast something can be spent.

2 Renewable and non-renewable resources

Renewable resources can refill, through nature’s cycles, at a pace that ordinary human use can live with: sunlight, wind, flowing water, biomass; forests and fisheries too, if offtake stays below regeneration. Non-renewable stocks were built on geological time and do not refill on a human lifetime: coal, petroleum, natural gas, most metallic minerals. Soil and groundwater sit in between: renewable in theory, but pumping and erosion can make them behave like slow non-renewables.

Sunlight is renewable; coal is not. Renewable does not mean unlimited. A forest is renewable only while cutting is slower than regrowth. A fishery is renewable only while nets are smaller than the breeding rate. That is why the syllabus does not stop at two boxes. The next line is “associated problems”: every resource carries the risk of over-use.

A finer cut used in the same books is perpetual (sun, wind, tides — the stock is not used up by ordinary capture), renewable (forest, fish, soil organic matter — they refill if offtake stays below growth), and non-renewable (fossil fuels, most ores). Groundwater and topsoil sit in a grey belt: nature can refill them, but not at the speed of a tube-well or a monsoon gully. Treat them as renewable on paper and they behave as non-renewable on the ground.

Conservation follows the cut. For non-renewables the work is thrift, substitution and recycling — once burned, coal is heat, not a hill. For renewables the work is staying inside regeneration — a working rule, not a slogan. Alternate energy in a later lesson is the attempt to shift offtake from the second box toward the first. Renewable does not mean “free and unlimited”; non-renewable does not mean “must never be used.” Both ask a rate.

3 Natural resources and associated problems

Associated problems means the resource itself is not the crisis. Human use makes the crisis. Three threads run through almost every resource. First, over-exploitation: taking more than forms. Second, unequal access: some hold much, many hold little — the opposite of the equitable use named at the end of this unit. Third, pollution and habitat loss that ride with use: a mine leaves dust, a dam drowns forest, fertiliser spoils water. Population, cities and energy hunger speed all three.

On a dry landscape the same threads show on land and water: falling groundwater, waterlogging in some canal belts, mine dust and pits, desertification at the edges. On the global scale the same grammar: rainforests cut, seas emptied, fossil fuels changing climate. The lessons that follow open those problems resource by resource. Unit 3 will show them as living systems; here they are stocks and the damage of spending them.

A shared pasture, a village tank, a forest that “belongs to everyone and therefore to no one” shows the same grammar: each user takes a little more, the stock falls, all lose. That is the associated-problem of a common resource when there is no shared rule. The opposite error is enclosure that locks the poor out. The syllabus’s last line — equitable use — is the answer to both errors, not a third topic.

Population, urban demand and energy-hungry industry do not create a new kind of problem; they speed the three threads already named. A dry region shows them together: falling wells, mine pits, overgrazed grass, a canal that waterlogs one belt and starves another. Global examples (cut rainforest, emptied fishery, fossil climate load) use the same three threads. Resource by resource, the next lessons only open the file; they do not change the diagnosis.

4 Forest resources — use, over-exploitation, deforestation, timber

Forests give fuel, timber, fodder, fruit, medicine, fibre and livelihood. They hold the water cycle, bind soil, store carbon and house biodiversity. Forest-dependent and tribal communities live directly from the grove. Use is not itself the fault. Over-exploitation is the fault: cutting, grazing and offtake faster than regrowth. Commercial timber, plywood, pulp, illegal felling and roads–mines break the forest into fragments. Fuelwood has long been a large share of rural energy; without an alternative the forest shrinks.

Deforestation is the lasting or long loss of forest cover — farm expansion, settlement, mining, dams, timber and fire. Results: a sharper flood–drought cycle, erosion, broken rain patterns, lost wildlife habitat, a warmer local climate, displacement of forest people. Cover on a map is not the same as a dense forest. Chipko, already named in Unit 1 as public awareness, belongs here as forest protection: saving trees is saving water and soil, not only a romantic act.

Uses split into direct (timber, fuelwood, fodder, food, medicine, fibre) and indirect (catchment, climate, carbon, wildlife home, tribal livelihood). Non-timber forest produce — tendu, mahua, gum, honey — often feeds the poor more steadily than a commercial log. Over-exploitation is not only the saw: excessive grazing, fire, and a road that opens illegal offtake count. Fragmentation (blocks of trees with no corridor) is deforestation’s quieter twin: the map still shows green; the living forest does not.

Check, in the language of the same books: keep offtake below growth, replant native mix not a single exotic, protect fire and illegal felling, give a fuel alternative so the hearth does not eat the grove. Chipko’s method — people between the axe and the trunk — is forest conservation as public awareness, already met in Unit 1. Social forestry and joint work with villages are tools of the same heading, not a separate paper. A dense canopy on a slope is water and soil saved for the plain below.

5 Mining and dams — forests and tribal people

The syllabus places mining and dams under forest resources because both cut a hole or a lake into the body of the forest. Mines need roads, camps, blasting and overburden; they strip trees. Tribal communities often live on the same hills that hold bauxite, coal, iron, copper. Cash compensation is not the forest livelihood returned. Dust, acid drainage and heavy metals travel into the river below.

Dams give irrigation, hydropower, drinking water and some flood control — benefits that the water lesson will name in full. From the forest angle the harm is that the reservoir drowns valley forest and villages. Forest hamlets are often the first to go under. New roads at the water-line open illegal felling. Fish paths and downstream flow change, so “forest” here means the whole valley’s life, not only trunks. Mining and dams can be tools of development. The question this heading asks is whose forest went, and who was moved.

Open-cast mines strip a wide surface; underground mines risk collapse, fire and acid drainage into the stream. Bauxite, coal, iron and copper often sit under forested tribal hills — the syllabus joins mining to forest for that reason, not as a geology extra. Dust on leaf and lung, overburden heaps, and a road that invites timber theft are the forest-face of the pit. Cash for land is not a returned grove, a returned graze, or a returned sacred site.

A large dam’s reservoir drowns valley forest and the first hamlets; the water lesson will list irrigation and power as benefits. Here the question is tribal and forest people: who was moved, whether livelihood followed, whether the new shoreline became a felling road. Fish ladders and a guaranteed downstream flow are forest–river life, not only engineering. Development can still use a mine or a dam; this heading insists that the cost is counted in trees and people, not only in megawatts.

6 Water resources — over-use of surface and groundwater

Most of the planet’s water is salt. Fresh water sits in rivers, lakes, glaciers and groundwater — drinking, irrigation, industry and ecosystems all hang on that thin share. Surface water is river, pond, canal, reservoir. Groundwater sits in aquifers; wells and tube-wells pull it. Over-utilisation means taking more than the year’s recharge. Green-revolution irrigation, city taps and industry sped the pull. Results: falling water tables, dry wells, land subsidence, salt water entering coastal aquifers, geological fluoride or arsenic coming up with the pump.

In a dry state groundwater is historical capital. A canal can bring surface water and, in places, waterlogging and salinity — the food and land lessons will meet that again. A chain of dams cuts downstream flow. Pollution is the twin of over-use: the water that remains is often dirty. Over-utilisation is offtake above recharge, not only “it did not rain.” Drought is weather. Over-use is policy and the pump.

The hydrological cycle — evaporation, cloud, rain, run-off, infiltration, groundwater, river to sea — is why water is renewable in theory. Over-utilisation breaks the cycle at one door: too little infiltration (bare slope, concrete city), too much pump, a dam that holds what the lower reach used to receive. Surface water is easier to see and easier to pollute; groundwater is hidden capital, so a falling table is often noticed only when the well dies.

India’s dry belts and hard-rock regions show fluoride or arsenic rising with deep pumping; coastal aquifers take in salt when the freshwater head falls. Canal irrigation can raise a water table until fields waterlog — over-use is not only “too little water,” it is water in the wrong place. Saving and recharge (Unit 6’s harvest and watershed) are the control; this lesson names the fault: offtake above recharge, of surface and of ground.

7 Floods, drought, water conflicts, dams — benefits and problems

A flood is water flowing beyond what the land can hold — heavy rain, glacier melt, dam gates, rivers silted up, houses on the floodplain. Deforestation on a slope lets soil fail, so water arrives in the plain as one pulse. Drought is a long water-deficit — failed rain, lost soil moisture, crop and drinking-water crisis. Both extremes mix climate with mismanagement.

Conflicts over water run from a village tank to interstate rivers. Upper and lower catchments share one river. Irrigation versus city, industry versus field, dam versus downstream fish — these are conflicts too. Benefits of dams: irrigation, hydropower, drinking water, fisheries, some flood control, navigation in a few places. Problems: displacement, drowned forest, silt filling the reservoir, disputed seismic load, a drying river below, water-borne disease, drowned cultural sites. The syllabus prints both lines — benefits and problems. A one-sided answer is incomplete.

Floods are made worse by silted beds, encroached floodplains and a bare catchment; drought is made worse by a falling water table and lost soil moisture — both mix climate with land use. Early warning, embankments, tanks and a tree line are management; they sit fully under disaster in Unit 5. Here they are water-resource problems: too much, too little, and a fight over the rest.

Conflicts over water in the college books include a village tank, irrigation versus city, and interstate rivers (the Cauvery dispute is the usual classroom name; Indus, Krishna–Godavari and canal-sharing inside a state are the same grammar). A dam’s benefits are real — irrigation, hydropower, drinking water, some flood control. Its problems are also real — displacement, drowned forest, silt, a dry river below, water-borne disease. The official line prints both. An answer that lists only turbines or only protest is incomplete.

8 Mineral resources — use, exploitation, environmental effects

Minerals are abiotic substances taken from the crust — metals (iron, copper, aluminium, zinc) and non-metals (limestone, gypsum, marble; coal is also read as an energy mineral). Use sits in building, machines, fertiliser, cement, jewellery and energy. Exploitation is the mine, the blast, the crush and the haul. Open-cast mining strips a wide surface; underground mining risks collapse and accident. Minerals are non-renewable — once smelted into goods they do not return as a hill; recycling is only a partial path.

The syllabus gives environmental effects a line of their own. Forest and soil are cut, overburden heaps up, dust sits on lungs and crops, acid mine water spoils rivers, heavy metals enter groundwater, blasting is noise and shake, closed mines leave pits and waste. Local farms and tribal settlements stand nearest. Control: scientific mining, putting overburden back, a green belt, water treatment, rehabilitating closed mines, recycling metal. Extracting and using both pollute — not only the pit, but the smelter too.

Metallic minerals (iron, copper, aluminium, zinc, gold) and non-metallic (limestone, gypsum, marble, mica) plus energy minerals (coal, sometimes uranium) are the usual three trays. Open-cast is wide and forest-hungry; underground is narrower at the surface and riskier below. Smelting and washing add air, water and slag pollution — the syllabus says effects of extracting and using, so the furnace is inside this heading, not only the pit.

Environmental effects to keep together: lost forest and soil, overburden, dust, acid mine drainage, heavy metals in groundwater, noise and blast, abandoned pits. Control in the same books: scientific mining, putting overburden back, a green belt, treating mine water, rehabilitating closed mines, recycling metal so that a new hill is not opened for every tin. Minerals are non-renewable; thrift and reuse are conservation, not a delay of the same offtake.

9 Food resources — world food problems, agriculture, overgrazing

The world food problem is not only “too little grain grown.” Production has risen in many countries, yet hunger remains — distribution, poverty, waste, war and climate. Population has grown; demand for meat and processed food pulls energy-crops into animal feed. Land and water are limited; new farmland is often cut from forest. So food is an environmental question, not only an agriculture-ministry question.

Agriculture turned grassland and forest into fields — habitat gone, diversity down, the soil’s natural cycle broken. Overgrazing is animals eating vegetation faster than it can return. Results: weaker grass roots, bare soil, erosion, a step toward desertification. Traditional mixed farming and grazing held a balance; commercial herds and unbounded grazing break it. Unit 3’s grassland ecosystem is wounded here; the cause in this unit is resource pressure.

World food problems in the books are hunger beside surplus, unequal distribution, post-harvest waste, war and climate shock, and a diet that pulls grain into meat. More tonnes grown is not the same as more people fed. New farmland cut from forest or wetland is an environmental cost of “more food.” So the heading is food resources — land, water, genetic varieties — not only a yield table.

Agriculture changed grassland and forest into fields: habitat gone, wild relatives of crops thinned, soil’s natural cycle broken by the plough. Overgrazing is the pastoral twin — animals eat faster than grass returns; roots fail; wind and water take the soil; desertification (the land lesson) begins. Mixed herds and a closed season for a pasture were older checks. Commercial unbounded grazing is the associated problem this line names.

10 Modern agriculture — fertiliser, pesticide, waterlogging, salinity

Modern agriculture (the face of the Green Revolution) rests on high-yielding seed, irrigation, chemical fertiliser and pesticide. Yields rose; the old form of famine broke in some regions. An environmental price came too. Fertiliser (especially nitrogen and phosphate) can cut soil life, send nitrate into groundwater, and drive eutrophication in ponds — algae bloom, oxygen falls, fish die. Pesticides kill friend insects, birds and fish with the pest; they can accumulate along a food chain (biomagnification will return in later units). Residues can remain in grain, milk and vegetables.

Waterlogging is soil pores filled with water so roots cannot breathe. Excess irrigation, poor drainage and canal seepage cause it. Salinity rises when irrigation water evaporates and salt stays on the surface, or when saline groundwater comes up. Canal-command belts show both. Remedy: drainage, controlled irrigation, salt-tolerant crops, organic manure, integrated pest management, crop rotation. The syllabus keeps four words together — fertiliser, pesticide, water logging, salinity. They are the environmental shadow of modern yield, not its enemies in a slogan.

The Green Revolution raised grain with high-yielding seed, irrigation, fertiliser and pesticide. Famine of the older kind broke in some regions; the environmental bill arrived as this four-word cluster. Nitrate in wells, phosphate driving a pond green, pest resurgence after friends are killed, DDT-type residues climbing a food chain (biomagnification, named again under water pollution) — these are not accidents at the edge of modern agriculture. They are its regular shadow when chemicals replace soil life and a single variety replaces a mix.

Waterlogging and salinity are the irrigation twins in canal-command belts: pores full of water, roots without air; salt left by evaporation or a rising saline table. Drainage, measured irrigation, salt-tolerant varieties, organic manure, crop rotation and integrated pest management are the remedies in the same books. The syllabus keeps fertiliser, pesticide, water logging and salinity together so that “modern yield” is not answered with a slogan against farming, but with the four environmental costs named.

11 Energy resources — growing needs, renewable and non-renewable, alternatives

Growing energy needs follow industry, transport, homes, farm pumps and the information net. Most world energy still comes from non-renewable fossil fuels — coal, oil, gas. They are limited; mining and burning give air pollution and greenhouse gases; oil routes are geopolitical disputes. Nuclear energy can leave less carbon, but mine, waste and accident sit in Units 5–6; here it is enough that it too can rest on a limited fuel cycle.

Renewable energy: solar, wind, small and large hydro, biomass, biogas, geothermal, tidal. Alternate energy resources in this syllabus are sources that cut fossil dependence — sun and wind suit a dry, sunny region; biogas joins rural waste; a better stove saves fuelwood. Large hydro is counted renewable, yet the forest–social cost of the dam is already on this unit. Saving energy is itself a resource — less spent is less mined. The individual’s role later in the unit joins this lesson to conservation.

Growing needs come from industry, transport, pump-sets, lighting and cooling, and the information net. Most of that still sits on coal, oil and gas — limited stocks, dirty at the mine and at the chimney, and a geopolitical fight over oil routes. Nuclear fuel can look low-carbon at the turbine; mine, waste and accident are Units 5–6. Here it is enough that it is not a free alternative.

Alternate / renewable sources the books name: solar (heat for water, photovoltaic for current — a dry sunny region’s obvious stock), wind, small hydro, biomass and biogas (dung and farm waste), geothermal, tidal. Large hydro is renewable electricity with the dam’s forest–social cost already on this unit. Saving energy — insulation, public transport, a better stove, lights when needed — is treated as a resource of its own. The individual’s role (last lesson) starts as this thrift.

12 Land resources — degradation, man-induced landslides, erosion, desertification

Land is a resource because soil, forest, field, pasture and town sit on it. The area of land does not grow; use changes. Land degradation is the fall of biological or economic productivity — erosion, salinity, waterlogging, pollution, mine pits, brick kilns, blind urban sprawl. Soil takes centuries to form and one storm to leave. So land behaves near a non-renewable if we leave it bare.

Soil erosion is water, wind and ice lifting the soil skin. Deforestation, overgrazing and wrong ploughing on a slope speed it. Desertification is dry and semi-dry land moving toward barren, desert-like infertility — climate and human use together. Man-induced landslides come when a hill road, a blast, illegal building or tree-removal unbalances a slope. Check: tree lines, contour ploughing, terraces, controlled grazing, scientific roads, filling closed mines.

Land as a resource is soil, slope, pasture, forest and the site of the town. Area does not grow; quality does fall. Degradation is loss of biological or economic productivity — erosion, salt, waterlogging, pollution, mine pits, brick earth, sprawl. Topsoil is a slow stock: centuries to form, one storm to leave. Treat land as infinite space for the next project and it behaves as a non-renewable.

Water erosion (sheet, rill, gully) and wind erosion are the two common skins. Deforestation, overgrazing and ploughing down a slope speed both. Desertification is dry and semi-dry land sliding toward barren infertility — climate plus use; a western Indian student sees the edge of it. Man-induced landslides are road cuts, blasts, illegal building and tree removal on a hill. Checks: contour ploughing, terraces, shelter-belts, a tree line, controlled grazing, scientific hill roads, filling a closed mine.

13 Role of the individual and equitable use for a sustainable system

The role of an individual in conservation begins in conduct, not only in a ministry. Water: close the tap, mend leaks, hold roof rain, do not flood the garden. Energy: lights and fans when needed, public transport, solar where it fits. Forest: save paper, local trees, report fire and illegal cutting. Food: less waste, seasonal grain, fewer pesticide-heavy choices where possible. Minerals: goods that last, recycling, less appetite for mine-products. Waste is Unit 5’s centre; saving the resource starts here.

Equitable use of resources for a sustainable system means share and spend so that today’s groups can live and tomorrow’s generation does not find the cupboard empty. Sustainable development, in the Brundtland line that Unit 6 will name in full, is meeting present needs without closing the door on future needs. Equity without that time-scale is incomplete — rich over-consumption and poor forced offtake both cut forest. Inter-generation justice and justice among groups now are one coin. A tank, a common pasture, a forest right are local tools of that equity. Unit 2 teaches that resources are limited; policy and the person must spend them justly. Unit 3 will show those resources joined as ecosystems.

The individual’s list is concrete because the syllabus names a role, not a feeling: close taps, mend leaks, hold roof rain; lights and fans when needed, bus or walk, solar where it fits; paper and local trees, report fire and illegal cutting; less food waste, seasonal grain; goods that last, metal recycled. None of this replaces a sewage plant or a forest law. All of it is offtake the person actually controls.

Equitable use for a sustainable system has two axes. Among groups now: the rich must not empty the tank while the poor cut the last grove for fuel. Across time: today’s offtake must leave a working stock for the next generation (the Brundtland sentence Unit 6 will quote in full). A village tank, a common pasture and a recognised forest right are local tools of that equity. Unit 2’s teaching in one line: resources are limited; spend them justly, or the associated problems named above become the only future.
