Multidisciplinary nature; definition, scope and awareness; need for public awareness notes

Ready

Multidisciplinary nature; definition, scope and awareness; need for public awareness is a topic in Environment Studies (Units) for B.A. English (CBCS 2025–28), Faculty of Arts at Maharaja Ganga Singh University, Bikaner.

This unit binds three things: the multidisciplinary nature of environmental studies ; definition, scope and awareness ; and the need for public awareness…

Unit 1 · Multidisciplinary nature; definition, scope and awareness; need for public awareness

This unit binds three things: the multidisciplinary nature of environmental studies; definition, scope and awareness; and the need for public awareness. Forest, pollution and law come later; here is the door of the subject.

1 Multidisciplinary nature

Multidisciplinary means the subject is built from many disciplines, not from one. Break the word: multi = many; disciplinary = of a branch of knowledge. Environmental studies is not a closed science like a single laboratory subject. A river that dies is at once a chemical problem (what is in the water), a biological problem (what fish and plants remain), a geological problem (silt, banks, groundwater), an economic problem (who drinks, who irrigates, who dumps), a legal problem (who is allowed to dump), and a health problem (who falls ill). One specialist sees one face. The paper asks you to see the whole.

That is why the official line is “the multidisciplinary nature of environmental studies,” not “a list of other B.A. subjects.” Nature here means character. The character of this study is that it must borrow tools. Physics and chemistry explain energy, matter, and pollutants. Botany and zoology explain plants, animals and microbes. Geology and geography explain land, soil, climate and maps. Hydrology and atmospheric science explain water and air. Sociology and anthropology explain how communities use land and custom. Economics explains cost, scarcity and “who pays.” Political science and law explain policy and the statutes you will meet in Unit 6. Engineering and technology explain control of waste, energy and industry. Medicine and public health explain disease. Agriculture explains food, soil and pesticide. Ethics asks what we ought to leave for the next generation. Statistics counts so that a claim is not only a feeling.

Two distinctions matter. Environmental studies is not the same as ecology. Ecology is one necessary branch; it is not the building. And “multidisciplinary” does not mean “the environment has many parts” (air, water, soil). Many parts is the definition of environment. Many subjects used to study those parts is multidisciplinary nature.

Because many branches sit together, the student of this paper is not asked to become a chemist or a lawyer. You are asked to know that those doors exist, what each door is for, and why a public decision that ignores one door fails. A factory that treats only the legal licence and not the river chemistry has not done environmental studies. A campaign that loves trees and cannot name why the soil under them dies has not done it either.

2 Definition of environment

The word environment comes from the French environner, “to surround.” So the first meaning is: everything that surrounds an organism — and, for this paper, everything that surrounds human life. Surroundings are not only scenery. They are the air you breathe, the water you drink, the soil that grows food, the other living things, the house, the road, the factory, the noise, the law, and the custom. If you define environment as “nature minus man,” the definition is already wrong, because human beings live inside it and remake it every day.

A working definition used across the named college books is this: the environment is the sum of all external conditions and influences that affect the life and development of an organism, including human beings. Two halves sit in that sentence. Biotic (living): plants, animals, microbes, and people. Abiotic (non-living): air, water, soil, sunlight, temperature, humidity, minerals, and physical space. A third layer is named in the same books: the man-made or cultural environment — houses, dams, vehicles, industries, cities, farms, and also institutions, values and knowledge. A brick wall is not a tree, but it still surrounds you and changes heat, water-flow and living space. Leave it out and the definition is only a forest chapter.

Three further notes keep the definition tight. First, the environment is dynamic: seasons change, rivers shift, cities grow, a chemical spill tonight is not last year’s water. Second, nothing in it is fully separate: smoke in the air becomes acid in rain, acid in rain becomes poor soil, poor soil becomes weak crops, weak crops become hunger. That chain is why a one-word definition (“nature”) is too thin for this paper. Third, “environment of X” can be local (a pond, a ward of Bikaner) or as wide as the planet; the word itself does not fix the scale. Scale is scope, the next lesson. Definition only says what kind of thing we are naming: the surrounding whole of living, non-living, and human-made conditions that shape life.

Do not confuse environment with ecology in a definition question. Ecology is the science of the relations among organisms and between organisms and their surroundings. Environment is the surroundings themselves (plus the living things in them). Environmental studies is the course that studies that whole with many disciplines. Three words, three jobs.

3 Four segments of the environment

The named books divide the physical environment into four segments or spheres. Learn the four names, what each holds, and the one fact that joins them: life is possible only where they meet.

Atmosphere. The gaseous envelope around the Earth. It holds the air we breathe, weather and climate, and a shield against harmful radiation. Oxygen, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, water vapour and traces of other gases sit here. When this envelope is dirtied, the same dirt returns as cough, heat-trap, acid rain or a changed monsoon. Atmosphere is not “the sky as scenery”; it is a working layer with thickness, composition and motion.

Hydrosphere. All water: oceans, seas, rivers, lakes, ponds, ice, snow, soil moisture, and groundwater. Most of the planet’s water is salt; the thin share of fresh water is what towns and farms actually drink and use. A canal, a well, and a cloud are all hydrosphere. Water moves; it is not a tank with a lid. That is why poison poured in one village well does not stay a “local” story.

Lithosphere. The Earth’s crust — rocks, minerals, landforms, and the soil formed on them. Soil is not dirt to be ignored. It is the thin living skin from which crops and most terrestrial food chains begin. Minerals and fossil fuels sit in this sphere; taking them out is a lithosphere act with atmosphere and hydrosphere consequences (dust, mine-water, burned fuel). “Lithosphere = only mountains” is too small.

Biosphere. The thin zone of life. It is not a fourth pile sitting beside the other three. It is the interface where atmosphere, hydrosphere and lithosphere overlap enough for organisms to live — roughly the lower air, the soil and the waters. Forests, grasslands, deserts, wetlands, coral, farmland, and the bacteria in a handful of soil are all biosphere. Human beings are inside it, not spectators.

Biotic and abiotic cut the same apple another way. The four spheres are where the environment is stacked. Biotic/abiotic is what kind of thing sits in those stacks. Plants in a forest are biotic in the biosphere; the sunlight and soil minerals they use are abiotic, drawn from atmosphere and lithosphere. You need both cuts. Biosphere is the zone of life at the interface of the other three, not “all animals only.”

SphereHoldsDo not shrink it to
AtmosphereGases, weather, climate, radiation shieldNot “empty sky”
HydrosphereAll water, including ice and groundwaterNot “only oceans” and not “only drinking water”
LithosphereCrust, rocks, minerals, landforms, soilNot “mountains only”; soil belongs here
BiosphereThe thin living zone where the other three overlapNot a separate planet-layer piled on top; humans are inside it

4 Scope of environmental studies

Scope means how far the subject reaches — what it is allowed to talk about, at what scale, and for what purpose. Definition said what environment is. Scope says how much of it this course covers and what the student is expected to do with that knowledge.

On this MGSU paper the scope is printed as Units 2–7. Natural resources (renewable and non-renewable; forest, water, mineral, food, energy, land) are Unit 2. Ecosystems (structure, function, types) are Unit 3. Biodiversity and its conservation are Unit 4. Environmental pollution is Unit 5. Social issues, from unsustainable to sustainable development, and environmental legislation, are Unit 6. Human population, environment, and the idea of field work are Unit 7. Unit 1 does not teach those chapters. Unit 1 teaches that they all sit inside one subject, so a student who learns only “trees are good” has not covered the scope.

Scope also has scale. The same subject can look at a household drain, a village grazing ground, a city landfill, a state canal, a national forest policy, or the whole Earth’s climate. Air and water do not stop at a district line.

Scope also has three jobs, not one. Knowledge: facts, processes, names of spheres and later of pollutants and laws. Values: what we count as a duty — to other people, to other species, to those not yet born. Action: habits and public participation, because a course that only describes a dying river has not finished its scope. Sustainable development — meeting present needs without closing the door on future needs — is named in full in Unit 6. In Unit 1 it belongs in the scope because the subject looks forward in time, not only at today’s picnic-spot.

Do not shrink the scope to “planting trees.” Do not swell Unit 1 into a pollution chapter. The range is resources, ecosystems, biodiversity, pollution, social issues and law, population, and field observation; the scales run local to global; the three jobs are know, value, act. Detail of each room is a later unit.

5 Awareness — what the word means

The syllabus joins awareness to definition and scope on the same line, then gives public awareness a line of its own. So the word is needed twice: what awareness is, and why the public must have it. This lesson is the first half.

Awareness is not the same as “having heard the word environment.” It is a clear, working sense that the surroundings are real, that they can be damaged, that the damage returns to bodies and livelihoods, and that one’s own acts are part of the story. Reciting four spheres while burning plastic beside a well is knowledge without awareness. Fearing a factory without knowing what it emits is alarm without knowledge.

The named college books, following the UNESCO Tbilisi conference (1977), give environmental education five goals, in this order:

1. Awareness. Sensitivity to the environment and to its problems — seeing that the problem exists. 2. Knowledge. A basic understanding of the environment, its functions, and the human role in it. 3. Attitudes. Concern, and the will to participate in protection and improvement; values, not only facts. 4. Skills. The ability to identify and help solve environmental problems. 5. Participation. The habit of taking part, so that the other four do not stay inside a notebook.

The five sit as a ladder. Awareness without knowledge is panic or fashion. Knowledge without attitude is a list of facts. Attitude without skill is a speech. Skill without participation stays private.

Goal (Tbilisi / college books)In one line
AwarenessSee that the environment and its problems are real
KnowledgeUnderstand how the environment works and how humans change it
AttitudesCare enough to want protection and improvement
SkillsBe able to identify problems and help solve them
ParticipationTake part, so the rest does not stay on paper

6 Need for public awareness

The last official line of the unit is need for public awareness. Public means the many: householders, farmers, workers, traders, officials, voters — not only the class that reads this paper. The named books give one tight reason first: people both cause environmental damage and suffer it; therefore the public must know, or the damage will continue.

Governments can pass a law. A laboratory can measure a pollutant. A college can set this paper. None of those three, by themselves, stops a plastic fire, a stolen groundwater pump, a felled roadside tree, or a festival immersion that kills a tank. Those acts are done by ordinary people in ordinary hours. If the public does not see the link between the act and the later fever, dry well, or flood, the law is a notice on a wall. That is the need.

Supporting reasons sit under that sentence. Population growth and rising consumption put more pressure on the same land, water and air. Resources are limited; public waste of water and power is not a private hobby when the well is shared. Pollution moves: one chimney, one drain, many lungs. Development that looks only at this year’s income can close the next generation’s options. Experts are few; users of the environment are everyone.

The named books mark the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment at Stockholm, 1972 as the turn that named the environment the world’s public business, and they tie World Environment Day (5 June) to that meeting. The Indian example they use for awareness at work is Chipko: village people, including women, holding trees to stop commercial felling in the hills. The point here is that an aware public can protect a resource. The full story of movements and laws belongs to Unit 6.

7 How awareness spreads

If the public must be aware, the named books ask how awareness travels. The need (lesson 6) is the why; this lesson is the path. Awareness does not jump from a statute into a household by itself. It moves through teaching, custom, news, a local body, a movement, and daily habit. Miss one channel and a whole class of people never hears the warning.

Formal education is school, college, this compulsory paper and the textbooks that name the same units. Eco-clubs, field visits and a local-ecology question (Unit 7) belong here: the classroom is meant to reach every stream, not only science. Informal education is family, neighbourhood, custom, workplace, panchayat, a fair or a place of worship, NGOs and forest-department weeks. Informal is not a weaker truth; for many people it is the only road that actually arrives. A grandmother who saves seed, a panchayat that protects a tank, a worker who will not dump oil in a drain — those are lessons without a timetable.

Media — newspaper, radio, television, and now a phone — carry both roads farther, and they also carry fashion, panic and waste-advertising. So media is a tool, not a guarantee. Two dates belong with this heading as public reminders, not as substitutes for daily care: World Environment Day, 5 June (tied to Stockholm 1972) and Earth Day, 22 April (from 1970). Chipko, already named as the need for an aware public, belongs here again as a method: people on the hillside taught a country what a classroom had not yet said. Movements, petitions and a vote are the same channel at a larger scale; Unit 6 will return to them as law’s fuel.

The individual is part of the public. Saving water, refusing needless plastic, planting and keeping a tree, sorting waste, not burning trash, reporting a felled roadside tree — these are the smallest form of participation, the fifth Tbilisi goal. Without them, formal education stays a notebook. With only them, and no law or plant, a city still dumps. Awareness spreads when the five goals move together: see, know, care, skill, take part.
