Unit 4 · Comprehension

This unit has three headings: comprehension of an unseen prose-passage; reading and paraphrasing a poem; expansion of an idea (idiom, proverb, or statement). Sections D and E of the written paper draw on Units 4 and 5: D is six questions, attempt five, 2.5 marks each; E is five questions, attempt three, 5 marks each, 250–300 words. The skill is to read what is on the page and to rewrite it without adding a second text.

Reading and expansion follow S. P. Kumar, Language, Literature and Creativity (Orient BlackSwan, 2013); R. P. Bhatnagar, A Textbook of General English (2016); Sanjay Kumar and Pushplata, Communication Skills (Oxford, 2011); Meenakshi Raman, Technical Communication (Oxford, 2017); and, for the grammar of the rewritten sentence, Thomson–Martinet, Murphy and Swan. The passages below are classroom models.

पठन और विस्तार S. P. Kumar, Language, Literature and Creativity (2013); Bhatnagar (2016); Kumar और Pushplata, Communication Skills (2011); Raman, Technical Communication (2017); तथा पुनर्लेखन के व्याकरण के लिए Thomson–Martinet, Murphy और Swan से हैं। नीचे के अंश कक्षा-नमूने हैं।

1 Comprehension of unseen prose-passage

An unseen passage is a prose extract not seen before the exam. Raman and Kumar–Pushplata treat comprehension as a reading skill: gist first, then detail. Read the passage once without a pen, so that the whole sits in view. Read it a second time and mark names, dates, numbers, contrast-words (but, however, therefore), and the sentence that states the main point. Answers must come from the passage, not from general knowledge of the topic. Keep the tense and the number of the question. If the question asks “why,” look for a because-clause or a result in the text; do not invent a cause the writer never gave.

Classroom question-types. Factual: a name, a time, a number that is printed. Copy only the needed words, not the whole paragraph. Inferential: a meaning the writer does not print in one line but that the lines together allow — still tied to the text. Vocabulary: a word or phrase in context; use the sentence before and after, not a memorised list. Title: a short heading that covers the whole passage, not the last sentence only. True/false or yes/no follow the same rule: the line that proves the answer should be visible in the extract.

Write short answers in your own words unless the question says “quote.” Do not add a moral the passage does not draw. If a word is used in a special sense in the passage, define that sense, not another dictionary sense. When two facts sit in one paragraph, answer only the fact asked. A title such as “A college reading room” fits a passage about seats, hours and a librarian; “Education in India” is too wide for the same lines.

The new reading room of the college opened in July. It holds eighty seats and two shelves of newspapers in Hindi and English. Students may sit from eight in the morning to six in the evening. Bags stay on the rack by the door. The librarian, Ms Rao, issues a day-pass if the identity card is left at home. Last month a leaking cooler wet a row of magazines; they were dried and bound again. The room is quiet after four, when most classes end and only exam groups remain.

classroom unseen prose

Sample reading of those lines. When did the room open? In July. What if a student has no identity card? Ms Rao issues a day-pass. Why is the room quieter after four? Most classes have ended; only exam groups remain. Issues here means gives / provides (a pass), not “problems.” A title that fits: “The college reading room.” A title that does not: “Coolers in Indian colleges” — that is one wet row, not the whole.

कक्षा का अपठित गद्य

उन पंक्तियों का नमूना पठन। कमरा कब खुला? जुलाई में। पहचान-पत्र न हो तो? Ms Rao दिन-पास देती हैं। चार बजे के बाद शांत क्यों? अधिकांश कक्षाएँ समाप्त; केवल परीक्षा-समूह रह जाते हैं। यहाँ issues का अर्थ देता / प्रदान करता है (पास), “समस्याएँ” नहीं। बैठता शीर्षक: “The college reading room।” नहीं बैठता: “Coolers in Indian colleges” — वह एक गीली पंक्ति है, पूरा नहीं।

2 Reading and paraphrasing a poem

To paraphrase a poem is to restate it in clear prose, keeping the same meaning, without the rhyme and without a new moral. Kumar and Bhatnagar’s general English both treat paraphrase as a reading of what the lines actually say. Read the poem twice. Name the speaker if the poem gives one, the place and time if they are given, and the pictures (tree, bell, door) the lines use. Then write consecutive sentences that walk through the poem in order. Do not jump to the last line first. Do not add a story the poem does not tell.

Keep person and tense. If the poem says we, the paraphrase says we or the students only if the lines support that. If the poem is in the present, stay in the present unless a line clearly moves. Images may be opened a little so that a reader who has not seen the verse still sees the picture — “Its shade a room the heat cannot own” can become “Its shade is like a room that the heat cannot enter” — but the tree must remain a tree. Leave out rhyme, line-breaks and a title of your own unless the question asks for a title.

A paraphrase is not an appreciation. Words such as “beautiful,” “the poet wants to teach us,” or a comparison with another poem belong to a different task. If a line is difficult, stay close to its grammar: subject, verb, object. When the question asks you to read and paraphrase, give the prose restatement, not a list of literary terms.

कविता we कहे तो भावार्थ we, या the students केवल जब पंक्तियाँ सहें। कविता वर्तमान हो तो वर्तमान रहो, जब तक कोई पंक्ति स्पष्ट न हटे। चित्र थोड़े खोल सकते हो ताकि बिना पद्य देखे पाठक चित्र देखे — “Its shade a room the heat cannot own” → “Its shade is like a room that the heat cannot enter” — पर पेड़ पेड़ रहे।

The courtyard tree stands still at noon,

Its shade a room the heat cannot own.

A sparrow drops, then climbs the air;

The bell will ring; we are still here.

Books wait like doors along the wall.

We go, and the tree keeps them all.

classroom lyric for paraphrase

Model paraphrase. At noon the tree in the courtyard does not move. Its shade is like a room that the heat cannot enter. A sparrow comes down and then flies up into the air. The college bell will ring, but we are still under the tree. The books wait along the wall like doors. We leave, and the tree remains with them.

The courtyard tree stands still at noon,

Its shade a room the heat cannot own.

A sparrow drops, then climbs the air;

The bell will ring; we are still here.

Books wait like doors along the wall.

We go, and the tree keeps them all.

3 Expansion of an idea (idiom, proverb, statement)

To expand an idea is to open a short saying into a connected paragraph or short essay. The paper may give an idiom (a fixed phrase whose meaning is not the sum of the words: break the ice, a blessing in disguise, hit the nail on the head), a proverb (a traditional complete sentence: A stitch in time saves nine, Honesty is the best policy, Where there is a will there is a way, Slow and steady wins the race, The pen is mightier than the sword), or a statement (Education is the backbone of a nation). Bhatnagar and Kumar–Pushplata keep one shape: explain the words, state the real meaning, give two illustrations (one near, one public), note a limit if the saying has one, and close.

Section E asks 250–300 words. A usable order is: (1) one or two sentences that unfold the literal picture; (2) the figurative or general meaning; (3) a classroom or household example; (4) a civic or historical example; (5) a caution (haste that is not timely; honesty that still needs law); (6) a last sentence that returns to the given words. Do not spend the whole answer only defining. Do not contradict the saying and then forget to return. Do not pad with a second proverb unless you use it in one line to sharpen the first.

Idiom and proverb are not the same. An idiom is a piece of a sentence (“They broke the ice with a question about the timetable”). A proverb can stand alone as advice. A statement is a claim you must support, not a folk line you only gloss. In all three, examples must fit the meaning: a stitch in time is timely small work, not “work hard in general.”

विचार का expansion (विस्तार) छोटी उक्ति को जुड़ा अनुच्छेद या छोटा निबंध बनाना है। पत्र मुहावरा दे सकता है (बँधी पदावली जिसका अर्थ शब्दों का जोड़ नहीं: break the ice, a blessing in disguise, hit the nail on the head), कहावत (पारंपरिक पूरा वाक्य: A stitch in time saves nine, Honesty is the best policy, Where there is a will there is a way, Slow and steady wins the race, The pen is mightier than the sword), या कथन (Education is the backbone of a nation)।

Model expansion (about 260 words) of the proverb A stitch in time saves nine. A tear in cloth is small on the first day. One stitch closes it. Left for a week, the tear runs; nine stitches, or a new piece, will be needed. The proverb uses that household picture for any work that is still small: a leak, a doubt in a lesson, a bill, a harsh word that can still be taken back.

The meaning is not “always hurry.” It is that a little labour at the right moment costs less than a late labour. A student who clears one tough page the evening it first resists it, keeps the next week free. The same student who says “I will do the whole unit the night before” meets nine pages at once and panics. A college that mends a leaking cooler when the first magazine is wet, as in the reading-room passage of this unit, does not later bind a whole rack. A city that clears one blocked drain in June does not wait for the July flood to teach the same lesson at a higher price.

The saying has a limit. Some waiting is not laziness: a doctor may watch a mild fever before a strong medicine; a committee may hear both sides before a rule. That waiting is still a stitch — attention now — not neglect. Neglect is the refusal to look. The proverb is against neglect, not against thought.

So the line is a rule of scale. Do the small thing while it is small. The nine stitches you save are hours, rupees, and temper that a later day will not give back. A stitch in time saves nine because time, unlike cloth, will not wait for a needle you meant to pick up tomorrow.

कहावत A stitch in time saves nine

A stitch in time saves nine क्योंकि समय, कपड़े की तरह, उस सुई का इंतज़ार नहीं करेगा जिसे तुम कल उठाने वाले थे।
