Exam answers

Written paper 120 marks · 3 hours. Section A: 10 × 2 marks (two from each unit). Section B: 5 × 8 marks, about 200 words. Two of the five are reference to context from starred texts. Section C: attempt 3 of 5, 20 marks, about 500 words. Starred for RTC: all Unit 2 lyrics; Schumacher; O. Henry; Bharati; Tagore. English first, then Hindi. Answers below are written as they may be copied into the answer-book.

Unit 1 · Literary terms, age and movements

1. Define stream of consciousness. Illustrate from the prescribed texts.2 marks

Stream of consciousness is a narrative method that puts on the page the mixed flow of a mind: sense-impressions, memories and half-thoughts, not a tidy report. Abrams traces the phrase to William James. The sentence may skip because thought skips. It is not the same thing as any first-person story.

Joyce and Woolf are the glossary’s stock novelists; they are not prescribed here. On this paper the method is seen in cousins: Frost’s “After Apple-Picking,” where drowsiness, the ice-pane and the woodchuck’s sleep run together; Dylan Thomas’s “Fern Hill,” a green-gold rush of Time; and Mansfield’s inner noticing in “A Cup of Tea.” Golding sometimes enters Simon’s mind, but Lord of the Flies as a whole is not a stream-of-consciousness novel.

इस पत्र पर रिश्तेदार: फ्रॉस्ट का “After Apple-Picking” (ऊँघ, बर्फ की फलक, वुडचक की नींद); Dylan Thomas का “Fern Hill” (हरा-सोना Time); Mansfield की “A Cup of Tea” में भीतरी नज़र।

2. What is a dystopia? Illustrate from the prescribed novel.2 marks

A dystopia is a bad place imagined as a whole society, the opposite of a utopia. Abrams: a community that looks planned or “advanced” and is in fact nightmarish. The word is not a synonym for any sad story. A lyric of one death is not a dystopia.

The prescribed illustration is Golding’s Lord of the Flies (1954): schoolboys, the conch, the hunt, the pig’s head, Simon, Piggy and a burning island. It is a social dystopia of the pack, not a police-state novel. Schumacher’s essay criticises giant machines; it is not dystopian fiction. Shaw’s Pygmalion is social comedy, not a nightmarish state.

3. Define allusion. Give two examples from the prescribed texts.2 marks

An allusion is a brief, tacit pointer to a person, story, place or other text the writer expects the reader to recognise. Abrams: it is not a full retelling and not a footnote. If the poem explains the whole myth, the device has become exposition.

Shaw’s title Pygmalion glances at Ovid’s sculptor whose statue comes alive. Yeats’s prayer alludes to Helen of Troy and to the queen from the sea-spray who chose a bandy-legged smith. Owen’s tunnel is an underworld descent. Golding’s title translates Beelzebub, “lord of the flies.” Allusion glances; a quotation marks words; a symbol is an object that stays on the page.

4. What is symbolism as a literary term? Illustrate from the prescribed texts.2 marks

Symbolism on this paper is a literary term, not a movement. It is the use of a person, object or action that means itself and also something further. Abrams: a symbol is concrete; the extra meaning cannot replace the object and throw it away. A metaphor says A is B once. The French Symbolist school of Mallarmé is not on the official movements list.

Prescribed objects: Golding’s conch, fire, glasses and pig’s head; O. Henry’s last ivy leaf; Frost’s woods; Yeats’s horn of plenty and laurel tree. Gandhi’s swaraj is a political idea, not a lyric symbol.

5. Define Magic Realism. Is O. Henry’s “The Last Leaf” an example?2 marks

Magic Realism is a mode in which marvels happen inside an otherwise realist world and are told as ordinary fact. Abrams: ghosts and metamorphoses sit beside kitchens without a science-fiction footnote. The name travels from Franz Roh into Latin American fiction. It is not a name for any strange event.

No prescribed text here is a textbook magic-realist novel. In “The Last Leaf” the ivy seems, for a page, to have refused winter; then the story explains the marvel as Behrman’s painting. Explanation ends magic realism. Golding’s talking pig’s head is fever and symbol, then a pig and a corpse.

6. What is the Harlem Renaissance? Is any Harlem text prescribed on this paper?2 marks

The Harlem Renaissance is the flowering of African American arts in and around Harlem, New York, mainly in the 1920s and into the 1930s. Alain Locke’s The New Negro (1925) is the critical landmark. Jazz, the blues and a new public pride in Black speech are the climate. The heading is not a nickname for any Black writing of any decade.

No Harlem author is prescribed. Zadie Smith’s “Joy” is a later Black British essay. Thumboo’s “Words” is a Singapore lyric about language after empire. The movement belongs to America, in those decades.

Alain Locke की The New Negro (1925) मील-स्तंभ है।

7. Define Existentialism. Illustrate from the prescribed texts.2 marks

Existentialism is a philosophical and literary climate for which existence comes before any given essence: a human being is what he or she chooses, in a world that does not hand down a ready meaning. Abrams names Kierkegaard as a root and Sartre and Camus as public French faces after 1945. The glossary cluster is anxiety, freedom, bad faith, the absurd and responsibility.

Golding’s island is the prescribed place: the boys are thrown there and choose the conch or the hunt. Owen’s dead enemy strips war of official meaning; pity is what remains. Frost’s speaker in the snowy woods stands between the lovely dark and his promises. Gandhi’s swaraj is ethical-political self-rule, not Sartre’s vocabulary. Mansfield’s Rosemary is vain, not an existential heroine.

8. Write a note on Modernism.8 marks · about 200 words

Modernism names the literary weather of the early twentieth century, especially about 1910–1930, with roots in the 1890s and an afterlife through the Second World War. Edward Albert’s history and Levenson’s companion agree on the shock: Victorian confidence in progress, empire and a reliable narrator cracks. War, the city, the machine and psychology make old forms feel dishonest. Abrams: a break with inherited realisms; experiment in voice, time, myth and the fragment. The word is not a date-stamp for everything written after 1900. O. Henry’s 1907 twist-story is magazine fiction. Tagore’s “The Postmaster” (1891) belongs under Voices from India.

On this paper the modernist climate is the lyrics and the short story of the war and the years just after. Yeats’s “A Prayer for My Daughter” (1919) is late Yeats: a private ceremony against a public storm. Owen’s “Strange Meeting” is the Great War’s underworld — pity distilled, the enemy as friend — the disillusion Albert places at the centre of the war poets. Mansfield’s “A Cup of Tea” (1922) is the modernist short story of class and appetite in one tight scene. Frost’s two lyrics are modern American speech: apple-picking and snowy woods in a plain voice that still holds symbol. Shaw’s Pygmalion (1912–13) is the Edwardian play of ideas: language as a class-weapon. It shares the century’s social nerve; it is not high modernist fragment-poetry. Auden’s 1939 elegy already looks back on a modernist master from Europe’s “nightmare of the dark.”

Three tests decide the heading. Does the work distrust easy story and easy comfort? Does form do new work — symbol, a hard lyric line, a broken public faith? Does it belong to the war, the city, or those cracked decades? Golding (1954) has crossed into a later mid-century fable. Zadie Smith is twenty-first-century. Modernism on this paper is Yeats, Owen, Mansfield, Frost, and Shaw as a play of ideas; Auden is the next generation remembering Yeats.

टैगोर का “The Postmaster” (1891) Voices from India के नीचे है।

Yeats की “A Prayer for My Daughter” (1919) उत्तर Yeats है: सार्वजनिक तूफान के विरुद्ध निजी विधि। Mansfield की “A Cup of Tea” (1922) वर्ग और भूख की तंग आधुनिकतावादी कहानी है।

9. Write a note on Post Modernism, with reference to the prescribed texts.8 marks · about 200 words

Post Modernism is the syllabus spelling; Abrams usually writes postmodernism. The word names the literary and cultural weather after the high modernist decades, gathering force from the 1960s. Abrams: a mixed, often playful or sceptical art that no longer trusts one grand story of progress, nation, or the artist as priest. Pastiche, collage, the blurring of high and low, and metafiction that knows it is made are the glossary marks. It is not a rude word for “after modernism, therefore worse,” and it is not a date-stamp for every page after 1945. Golding’s 1954 fable is a mid-century moral experiment, closer to a dark parable than to postmodern play.

This paper does not set a textbook postmodern novel. The term is still to be defined from Abrams and illustrated with care. Zadie Smith’s “Joy” (Feel Free, 2018) is a twenty-first-century personal essay that moves between a night of dancing, a child, and the difference between pleasure and joy. The voice mixes registers; it does not build a Victorian moral sermon. That mix is a late, essayistic cousin of postmodern freedom, not proof that Smith wrote a postmodern novel. Edwin Thumboo’s “Words” treats language as something inherited, used and argued over after empire — a self-conscious attention to words as words. Shaw already showed language as costume; Thumboo shows language as history. Wit in Pygmalion does not make Shaw postmodern.

The contrast may be put in one sentence. Modernism still often wants a new myth or a hard form to hold the fragments: Yeats’s ceremony, Owen’s pity, Golding’s fable. Postmodernism doubts that any one form can be the last cathedral. On this paper the set page for Post Modernism is thin: Smith’s essay and Thumboo’s language-poem are the honest illustrations, not a second Golding.

10. Write a note on Surrealism, with reference to the prescribed lyrics.8 marks · about 200 words

Surrealism is the 1920s movement, named in André Breton’s manifesto (1924), that tried to let dream, chance and the unconscious write over daylight reason. Abrams: a successor to Dada; images collide; Freud’s inner life is treated as a source, not a case-history. Automatic writing, surprising juxtaposition, the marvellous without a realist alibi — these are Baldick’s marks. The movement began in French poetry and painting. The word is not a loose name for anything strange. Owen’s tunnel is strange; that does not make Owen a member of the Paris group.

No manifesto-surrealist poem is prescribed. Dream-logic appears inside another job. Owen’s “Strange Meeting” unfolds as if after death: a dull tunnel, sleepers, an enemy who is also a friend. The war poem uses underworld vision to say pity; it is not Breton’s game of chance. Dylan Thomas’s “Fern Hill” lets time, farm and colour run in a dream-syntax of childhood — associative, lush — while remaining an elegy for youth, not a surrealist tract. Golding’s Simon before the pig’s head hears a voice; the scene is fever and symbol, closer to a moral vision than to automatic writing. Frost’s woods are not surreal: the diction is plain and the choice is waking.

Surrealism, then, is the 1920s programme of dream and the unconscious as method. Defined from Abrams, it is illustrated here by Owen’s underworld meeting and Thomas’s dream-time — cousins that still serve war-pity and childhood-elegy, not membership of Breton’s group.

11. Write a note on Post Colonialism as this paper uses the heading.8 marks · about 200 words

Post Colonialism is the syllabus spacing; Abrams usually writes postcolonial. The heading names both the historical condition after empire and the later critical school that reads literature for colony, race, language and the “writing back” of the formerly colonised. Companions take 1947 and other mid-century independences as political landmarks; later theory titles come after that. On this paper the heading must also cover early anti-colonial writing. Gandhi’s Hind Swaraj is 1909: not “after” the Raj, but already against a civilisation he calls a disease.

Unit 5 is the prescribed Indian map. Chapter 4, “What is Swaraj,” asks what home rule is for: not the English machine with brown clerks, but self-rule of the self and of a different civilisation. Bharati’s “Phoenix,” “Freedom” and “Ode to Freedom” (Nandakumar’s Sahitya Akademi text) are nationalist lyrics of dying and resurgent Bharat. Tagore’s “The Postmaster” is a village under a colonial office: the postmaster is posted, bored, leaves; Ratan remains. That is not a manifesto; it is the human cost of an outpost. Unit 2 adds Thumboo’s “Words”: Singapore, English as a language one must use, question and own after empire. Zadie Smith is a later Black British voice; “Joy” is not a swaraj tract. Shaw’s Pygmalion is class-speech inside England, not the colony. Eliza is not postcolonial because she is taught to talk.

Three tests keep the heading honest. Is empire, its language, or its civilisational claim on the page? Is there a counter-claim for a people, a village or a tongue? Are the names still this paper’s names? Gandhi, Bharati, Tagore and Thumboo carry the heading. Golding’s island is a dystopia of English schoolboys, not a colony’s reply. Yeats’s Ireland is a nation-question inside European modernism, a cousin of nationalist lyric, not Unit 5.

12. Discuss the age and movements of this paper — Modernism, Post Modernism, Magic Realism, Existentialism, Surrealism, Harlem Renaissance, Post Colonialism — with reference to the prescribed texts.20 marks · about 500 words

The title of the course is 20th Century Literature. Unit 1’s official movements still have to hold a 1891 Tagore story, a 1909 Gandhi chapter, a 1954 Golding novel and a 2018 Smith essay. Dates are a guide, not a cage: they stop Harlem being placed on Golding’s island, magic realism on Behrman’s painted leaf, or postmodernism on Pygmalion. Meanings follow Abrams and Harpham (2011) and Albert (1975). Stream of consciousness, dystopia, allusion and symbolism are tools that can sit inside more than one climate. Each heading below is seated on a prescribed page of this paper.

Modernism is about 1910–1930: broken old forms, war, inner mind, hard lyric. Yeats 1919, Owen’s underworld, Mansfield 1922, Frost’s plain-speech lyrics, Shaw as a play of ideas, Auden remembering Yeats from 1939. It is not O. Henry’s twist and not Tagore’s village tale. The Harlem Renaissance is 1920s Harlem, New Negro arts, Locke 1925; no Harlem author is set. It is modernism’s American Black city-voice, parallel to Yeats’s Ireland, not a copy, and not Unit 5’s India. Surrealism is Breton 1924: dream as method. Illustrations only: Owen’s dream-hell still serving pity; Thomas’s dream-time still serving elegy for youth. Frost’s woods are waking.

Existentialism peaks in the 1940s–50s: choice, anxiety, no ready meaning. Golding’s island is the laboratory — existence first, conch or hunt, Simon’s knowledge that the beast is them, an officer who returns the boys to a larger war. Owen’s “enemy you killed, my friend” and Frost’s choice at the edge of the lovely dark are related glances. Gandhi’s swaraj is ethical-political, not Sartre. Magic Realism is marvel told as ordinary fact, the Latin American stock school. “The Last Leaf” is an explained trick; Golding’s beast is psychology. The list does not set a textbook instance; the two contrasts show that the word has been understood.

Post Modernism, from the 1960s, doubts one grand story and mixes registers. The set page is thin: Smith’s “Joy” and Thumboo’s “Words” are glances, not a second Golding. 1945 is not a stamp on every later page. Post Colonialism must cover early anti-colonial writing as well as later theory: Gandhi chapter 4 (Englistan is not Swaraj), Bharati’s phoenix and freedom lyrics, Tagore’s outpost, Thumboo’s inherited English. Shaw’s Eliza is Cockney London, not a colony. Golding is English schoolboys, not writing back.

The map may close on the tools and the climates together. Tools: stream of consciousness (Frost, Thomas, Mansfield as cousins), dystopia (Golding), allusion (Shaw’s title, Yeats’s Helen, Owen’s underworld, Beelzebub), symbolism (conch, leaf, woods, horn). Climates: Modernism on the war-and-after lyrics and Mansfield; Harlem as a glossary movement without a set author; Surrealism as definition plus Owen and Thomas; Existentialism on the island; Magic Realism as a term not forced onto an explained leaf; Post Modernism as a thin later glance; Post Colonialism on Gandhi, Bharati, Tagore and Thumboo. A Section C answer names the headings the question asks, defines each from Abrams, and ties each to one prescribed page. A list of seven labels without a text is not an essay. Joyce’s Ulysses, Márquez, and a Harlem novelist are not this list. The paper has already chosen the examples.

“The Last Leaf” समझाई चाल है; गोल्डिंग का beast मनोविज्ञान है।

Unit 2 · Poetry

1. Explain Auden’s line “poetry makes nothing happen.” What does he still ask of the poet?2 marks

The line is from section II of W. H. Auden’s “In Memory of W. B. Yeats” (1939). After “You were silly like us; your gift survived it all,” Auden refuses the claim that verse runs history. Poetry survives “in the valley of its making,” a way of happening, a mouth. Mad Ireland hurt Yeats into poetry; armies still move.

The sentence is not a sneer, and it is not the whole elegy. Section I is winter public weather. Section III still commands: in the nightmare of the dark, follow, poet, and “teach the free man how to praise.” The limit and the duty belong together.

पंक्ति W. H. Auden की “In Memory of W. B. Yeats” (1939) के खंड II से है। “You were silly like us; your gift survived it all” के बाद Auden इनकार करते हैं कि पद्य इतिहास चलाता है।

2. Explain Dylan Thomas’s line “Time held me green and dying.”2 marks

The close of “Fern Hill” runs: Time held me green and dying, though I sang in my chains like the sea. Green is youth and the farm’s colour-symbol; dying is already inside that green. Childhood was never outside Time; the farm was already a singing chain. Time is personified; the line is not a calendar footnote.

The lyric is an elegy for youth. The dream-syntax still serves mourning; Thomas is not writing a surrealist manifesto. Frost’s apples in “After Apple-Picking” are labour at the edge of sleep; Thomas’s apples are joy before that sleep. The woods’ “miles to go” belong to another Frost poem.

3. Explain the last stanza of Frost’s “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening.”2 marks

The woods are lovely, dark and deep, but I have promises to keep, and miles to go before I sleep — and the last line is said twice. The woods are a symbol: rest, temptation, even death-sleep, held against duty. The little horse has already shaken its harness bells; the speaker chooses the road, not the dark.

The stanza is a waking choice at the edge of the lovely dark. Sleep said twice can mean ordinary night-sleep and a last sleep. The lyric is not a dystopia and not “After Apple-Picking.” Beside Auden’s “poetry makes nothing happen,” these promises still make something happen: the speaker leaves the woods.

4. Write a short note on Edwin Thumboo’s “Words.”2 marks

Edwin Thumboo is the Singapore poet on this list. “Words” (1977) is a starred Unit 2 lyric about language after it leaves the mouth. Words are dangerous, especially simple words left behind for others. They are understood simply, edited, taken with a careful disregard; their plainness complicates. A polite message — tell him the anger has come to pass, friendship is not maimed — is likely to be quoted as He won’t.

Words are neither valid, merciful nor bad in themselves; nothing unless used, urged, imported into dialogue, becoming part-anger, part-laughter, bruised. Words are words; except for us they are not personalities; we make them into poems. Unit 1 seats the lyric under Post Colonialism as language owned after empire, and under Post Modernism only as a glance: words as words. The worry is quotation and misuse, not Eliza’s vowels in Shaw.

5. Explain the following with reference to the context: “He disappeared in the dead of winter: / The brooks were frozen, the airports almost deserted.”8 marks · RTC · about 200 words

Reference. These are the opening lines of W. H. Auden’s “In Memory of W. B. Yeats,” prescribed in Unit 2 and starred for detailed study. Yeats died in January 1939. The elegy has three sections. This extract is the public weather of section I. The speaker is the elegist, not Yeats in “A Prayer for My Daughter,” and not Owen in the war-tunnel.

Context. Section I treats the day of death as a climate. Snow disfigured the public statues; mercury sank in the mouth of the dying day; the instruments agree that the day of his death was a dark cold day. Far from his illness the wolves ran on through the evergreen forests: nature does not stop. For him it was his last afternoon as himself; the provinces of his body revolted; he became his admirers. Now he is scattered among a hundred cities; the words of a dead man are modified in the guts of the living. Ireland is already in the poem; Europe’s “nightmare of the dark” waits in section III.

Explanation. The extract does two jobs. Allusion: a public man, winter as history, airports as the modern world. Late modernism: the master dies and the thermometer, not the muse, certifies the day. Personification (the dying day, the provinces of the body) and understatement (a few thousand will think of the day as slightly unusual) keep the tone public, not a private sob. The winter opening leads on to “he became his admirers,” then to the limit “poetry makes nothing happen,” and at last to the command to teach the free man how to praise. The three movements belong to one elegy.

ये W. H. Auden की “In Memory of W. B. Yeats” की आरंभिक पंक्तियाँ हैं, इकाई 2, विस्तृत अध्ययन के लिए तारांकित। वक्ता एलीजी-लेखक हैं, “A Prayer for My Daughter” के Yeats नहीं, युद्ध-सुरंग के Owen नहीं।

6. Explain the following with reference to the context: “I am the enemy you killed, my friend.”8 marks · RTC · about 200 words

Reference. The line is spoken in Wilfred Owen’s “Strange Meeting,” the Great War lyric prescribed on this paper in Owen Knowles’s 1999 Wordsworth Editions text. All Unit 2 poems are starred. The first speaker has seemed to escape battle down a profound dull tunnel scooped through granites which titanic wars had groined. Encumbered sleepers groan; one springs up with piteous recognition. They stand in Hell. The other man then names himself.

Context. The stranger continues: I knew you in this dark; for so you frowned yesterday through me as you jabbed and killed. I parried; but my hands were loath and cold. Earlier he has spoken of the pity of war, of the truth untold, of the undone years. Whatever hope is yours was my life also. Owen’s word is pity, not glory. The meeting is strange because the dead enemy is also the friend who shared the same wasted hope. The poem closes: let us sleep now.

Explanation. The extract holds the poem’s conceit in one address: enemy and friend in the same breath. Allusion: an underworld descent, not a second set book of Dante. Irony: official war-language of “the enemy” collapses. After the big words fail, pity is what is left. Dream-hell serves that pity; Owen is not writing Breton’s surrealist chance. The poem does not stamp a nation on the corpse; “the enemy” is the man killed yesterday. The hands loath and cold, and pity as the war lyric’s job, complete the explanation.

7. Explain the following with reference to the context: “And may her bridegroom bring her to a house / Where all’s accustomed, ceremonious.”8 marks · RTC · about 200 words

Reference. These lines come near the close of W. B. Yeats’s “A Prayer for My Daughter” (1919), the last starred lyric of Unit 2. The speaker is the father-poet. The child is Anne Yeats, sleeping while a storm howls upon the tower and the elms. The poem is not Auden’s later elegy for Yeats.

Context. He has walked and prayed an hour. May she be granted beauty, yet not beauty enough to make a stranger’s eye distraught, or her own before a looking-glass; those made beautiful overmuch may never find a friend. Helen being chosen found life unlucky; the great Queen who rose out of the spray chose a bandy-legged smith. The loveliest woman born, out of the mouth of Plenty’s horn, bartered that horn for an old bellows full of angry wind — Maud Gonne glanced, not footnoted. Against that public storm Yeats wants rootedness: a linnet, a green laurel in one dear perpetual place, courtesy, a mind without hatred. How but in custom and in ceremony are innocence and beauty born? Ceremony’s a name for the rich horn, and custom for the spreading laurel tree.

Explanation. The extract is the prayer’s positive room after the Helen-room. Allusion: Helen, Aphrodite, the Irish public woman. Symbolism: ceremony as horn and laurel. Modernism here does not break form; it asks for a ceremony to hold fragments. Frost’s speaker has promises to keep; Yeats’s father wants custom for a child. The storm, the elms and the political wind belong with the ceremonious house; the two rooms are one prayer.

ये पंक्तियाँ W. B. Yeats की “A Prayer for My Daughter” (1919) के अंत के निकट हैं, इकाई 2 की अंतिम तारांकित गीति।

8. Write a critical note on Yeats’s “A Prayer for My Daughter.”8 marks · about 200 words

Yeats’s 1919 prayer is a modernist lyric that answers a public storm with private ceremony. Anne Yeats sleeps under the cradle-hood; the haystack- and roof-levelling wind, bred on the Atlantic, screams upon the tower, under the bridge, and in the elms above the flooded stream. The father has walked and prayed an hour. He will not pray for a beauty like Helen’s, which found life unlucky, or like the goddess from the spray who chose a bandy-legged smith, or like the loveliest woman born who, for an opinionated mind, bartered Plenty’s horn for an old bellows full of angry wind. Those made beautiful overmuch lose natural kindness and may never find a friend. An intellectual hatred is the worst, so let her think opinions are accursed.

The prayer turns to what should root the girl. May she become a flourishing hidden tree; may her thoughts be like the linnet; may she live like some green laurel rooted in one dear perpetual place. Hearts are not had as a gift but hearts are earned; courtesy is the chief learning. If there is no hatred in a mind, assault and battery of the wind cannot tear the linnet from the leaf. Then the bridegroom: may he bring her to a house where all’s accustomed, ceremonious. How but in custom and in ceremony are innocence and beauty born? Ceremony’s a name for the rich horn, and custom for the spreading laurel tree. The horn and the laurel are Unit 1’s symbolism at household scale: form as a living plant.

The lyric is afraid of the same Europe that Auden will later call a nightmare of the dark. Yeats’s answer is not Owen’s pity in hell and not Frost’s quiet woods. It is a social hope for one girl. Allusion does the political work without a speech. Personification of the storm makes history weather. The ceremonial close is the form the argument asks for. The two rooms on the page are storm, Helen, angry wind; then linnet, laurel, custom and ceremony.

9. Discuss the prescribed twentieth-century lyrics — Auden, Dylan Thomas, Frost, Thumboo, Owen and Yeats.20 marks · about 500 words

Unit 2 sets six names, all starred: Auden’s “In Memory of W. B. Yeats”; Dylan Thomas’s “Fern Hill”; Frost’s “After Apple-Picking” and “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening”; Edwin Thumboo’s “Words”; Owen’s “Strange Meeting”; Yeats’s “A Prayer for My Daughter.” The named Owen book is Owen Knowles (Wordsworth Editions, 1999). Albert’s war-and-after climate and Abrams’s terms — allusion, symbolism, the modernist break — are the tools. The essay is these pages, not a survey of modern poetry at large.

Auden (1939) buries Yeats in winter: frozen brooks, empty airports, wolves in evergreen forests, a man who became his admirers. Section II limits art — “poetry makes nothing happen” — and still calls verse a mouth that survives. Section III, ceremonial, lays the Irish vessel to rest and then looks at Europe’s barking dogs: follow, poet, teach the free man how to praise. The elegy is public modernism remembering a master. Yeats’s 1919 prayer is the earlier private ceremony: storm on tower and elms, Helen and the angry wind, then linnet, laurel, custom and ceremony. The two Yeats-pages are a pair, not one poem. Auden writes after the death; the prayer is spoken before the child wakes.

Owen’s tunnel is the war’s underworld. Out of battle into granites titanic wars had groined; sleepers; piteous recognition; “I am the enemy you killed, my friend.” Pity, not glory; enemy and friend in one breath; hands loath and cold. Allusion is the descent; after official meaning fails, pity remains. Thomas’s “Fern Hill” is not a trench. It is green-gold childhood already held by Time, singing in chains like the sea — colour-symbol, elegy of youth, dream-syntax that still serves mourning. Frost’s two lyrics are American speech doing symbol and must not be melted into one snow. “After Apple-Picking”: drowsiness, ice-pane, woodchuck sleep in the cellar bin, a harvest that weighs. “Stopping by Woods”: woods lovely, dark and deep against promises and miles, the last line twice so sleep can mean night and death. A waking choice at the edge of the dark.

Thumboo’s “Words” is the unit’s postcolonial lyric: English as a tongue inherited, used, argued, owned after empire. Simple words twist; a polite message becomes “He won’t”; we make words into poems. The lyric is not Harlem, not Gandhi’s chapter, not Shaw’s Cockney drill. The set therefore has three jobs at once. War and ceremony in Europe and Ireland (Owen, Auden, Yeats). Time, farm, woods and sleep in Thomas and Frost. Words as history in Thumboo. Symbolism is the shared craft: winter weather, green and gold, woods, horn and laurel, the enemy’s address. Allusion is the shared glance: Yeats the public man, Helen, an underworld, a forest that feels like a tale without naming one.

A complete answer walks all six names and ties them to Unit 1. Auden’s limit still ends in praise. Owen’s enemy is not a national insult; it is the man killed yesterday. Fern Hill remains an elegy, not Breton. The woods remain a choice, not a dystopia. Thumboo is not skipped because the other names are more famous. If the question names war, Owen and Auden’s 1939 Europe lead; if it names nature, Fern Hill and Frost lead, with Time and promises so the lyrics do not become scenery. Last lines to keep in the ear: teach the free man how to praise; green and dying; miles to go; the enemy my friend; custom and ceremony; we make them into poems.

इकाई 2 छह नाम निर्धारित करती है, सब तारांकित: Auden की “In Memory of W. B. Yeats”; Dylan Thomas का “Fern Hill”; फ्रॉस्ट के “After Apple-Picking” और “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening”; Edwin Thumboo का “Words”; Owen की “Strange Meeting”; Yeats की “A Prayer for My Daughter।”

युद्ध से निकल कर ग्रेनाइट में, जिसे टाइटन युद्धों ने खोदा; सोए; दयनीय पहचान; “I am the enemy you killed, my friend।”

Unit 3 · Prose / novel

1. How does Zadie Smith distinguish pleasure from joy in “Joy”?2 marks

Smith’s essay “Joy,” collected in Feel Free (2018, pp. 3–12), is a personal essay, not a short story. Pleasure is daily and ownable: an egg sandwich from a grimy van, a pineapple popsicle that stills the anxiety of writing for eight minutes, other people’s faces on Broadway, the private game of “being the dog” until a small child says stop.

Joy is rarer: a strange admixture of terror, pain and delight, known perhaps five or six times. The nightclub Fabric mimicked joy; morning proved it was not. Real joy arrives later: a museum wall, love on a train toward Auschwitz, children who multiply joy dangerously. Julian Barnes’s line, passed through friends: it hurts just as much as it is worth. Sane animals would choose pleasure; humans accept the crazy deal of joy.

2. What does Schumacher mean by “a technology with a human face”?2 marks

The phrase is the title-claim of E. F. Schumacher’s starred chapter in Small Is Beautiful (Harper & Row, 1973, pp. 146–160). The syllabus prints Schumaker; the author is Schumacher. Technology recognises no self-limiting principle of size, speed or violence. Hence a threefold crisis: inhuman organisation, a groaning environment, exhausting fossil fuels. The primary task of technology should be to lighten work so a person can live and develop. Instead, labour-saving machines often steal leisure, and creative hand-work becomes a luxury of the rich.

The human face is therefore intermediate technology: production by the masses, in Gandhi’s sentence, with first-class tools that are small, cheaper than super-technology, and democratic. Man is small, and therefore small is beautiful.

3. What is the twist of O. Henry’s “The Last Leaf”? Why is the story not magic realism?2 marks

The story is starred. The syllabus readings wrongly list Maugham; the author is O. Henry. Johnsy, ill with pneumonia in Greenwich Village, decides she will die when the last ivy leaf falls outside her window. Overnight the last leaf stays. She recovers. Behrman, the old painter who had never made his masterpiece, is found dying of pneumonia: he had painted the leaf on the wall in the icy rain. The masterpiece was labour and love, not weather.

Magic realism needs a marvel told as ordinary fact without a realist explanation. This story explains the marvel as paint. The leaf is a symbol that was also a painting.

4. Explain the following with reference to the context: “We need a technology with a human face.”8 marks · RTC · about 200 words

Reference. The sentence is the title-claim of E. F. Schumacher’s chapter “Technology with a Human Face” in Small Is Beautiful: Economics as if People Mattered (1973, pp. 146–160), starred prose in Unit 3. The syllabus spelling Schumaker is a misprint. Gandhi is quoted later in the chapter on production by the masses; the extract is not chapter 4 of Hind Swaraj.

Context. Technology tumbles from crisis to crisis because, unlike living nature, it does not know where to stop. It is not self-balancing, self-adjusting, self-cleansing; in nature it acts like a foreign body. Three crises at once: human nature revolts against inhuman organisation; the living environment groans; non-renewable resources, especially fossil fuels, head toward exhaustion. Materialism as limitless expansion in a finite world cannot last. Industry has not solved poverty or unemployment. Watching computers, technology seems to lighten work; watching whole societies, leisure tends to sit in inverse proportion to labour-saving machinery. Actual producers are a tiny share of total social time (about three and a half per cent). Prestige goes to those farthest from production. Marx: too many useful things, too many useless people.

Explanation. The extract is therefore a question against giantism. The later pages name the opposite goal: raise productive time, first-class tools, Gandhi’s production by the masses, intermediate technology — vastly superior to the primitive, cheaper than the rich world’s super-technology. Two attitudes will decide the future: the forward stampede and the home-comers. Small is beautiful because man is small. The human face is size, skill and the democracy of tools, not kindness in the abstract. Unit 5’s Hind Swaraj is a different Gandhi page: the soul of home rule, not intermediate tools.

वाक्य E. F. Schumacher के अध्याय “Technology with a Human Face” का शीर्षक-दावा है, Small Is Beautiful: Economics as if People Mattered (1973, पृ. 146–160), इकाई 3 का तारांकित गद्य।

5. Explain the following with reference to the context: “It is Behrman’s masterpiece — he painted it there the night that the last leaf fell.”8 marks · RTC · about 200 words

Reference. The line is the close of O. Henry’s “The Last Leaf,” starred short story in Unit 3. Sue speaks to Johnsy after the old painter Behrman has died of pneumonia. The syllabus readings print Maugham; the author is O. Henry. The scene is Greenwich Village: two young women artists, an ivy vine on the opposite wall.

Context. Johnsy has counted the falling ivy leaves and made a bargain with death: when the last leaf goes, she will go. The doctor wants her to want to live. Sue weeps and works. Behrman, who drinks, talks of a masterpiece he will paint someday, and poses as a model, scoffs at the foolishness of dying because of leaves. A storm night; morning; one leaf still clings. Johnsy’s will returns. Then Behrman is found soaked and icy, a palette and a lantern below the wall. The last leaf had fallen in the night; the one they see is paint.

Explanation. The extract turns a weather-symbol into labour and love. While the leaf was taken for nature it meant hope; when it is known as art it still means hope, and now also sacrifice. Irony, O. Henry’s twist: the masterpiece is not a gallery canvas but a leaf that had to fool a dying girl. Magic realism is not the mode, because the story supplies the realist explanation. The names to keep are Johnsy, Sue and Behrman, and the fact of his death. The vine, the wall and the old man are this paper’s O. Henry.

Irony, ओ.

6. Write a critical note on Katherine Mansfield’s “A Cup of Tea.”8 marks · about 200 words

Mansfield’s “A Cup of Tea” (1922) is the unit’s modernist short story: one afternoon, a tight cast, a social appetite laid bare. Rosemary Fell is rich, pretty, a little extravagant, shopping for an antique box she does not need. In the rain a thin girl, Miss Smith, asks the price of a cup of tea. Rosemary, in a flush of adventure and self-admiration, takes her home as if poverty were a picturesque pet. Tea, bread, a fire, a dream of being splendidly kind. Philip comes in, looks at the girl, and says she is astonishingly pretty. Rosemary’s kindness cools. She gives Miss Smith money and sends her away. Then she asks Philip, “Am I pretty?” The cup of tea was never for the girl; it was a mirror.

Unit 1 places Mansfield with the modernist short story of class and inner noticing, a neighbour of stream of consciousness. The story is fiction, 1922, a drawing-room. O. Henry’s twist in this unit is sacrifice; Mansfield’s twist is vanity. Shaw’s Eliza is picked up for a phonetic bet; Rosemary consumes a feeling and puts it down.

The method is the irony of charity, the cup that is not shared, and a close that turns from the beggar to the wife’s face. The facts to keep are the little box, the rain, Miss Smith, Philip’s “pretty,” and Rosemary’s last question.

7. Write a note on the chief symbols in Golding’s Lord of the Flies.8 marks · about 200 words

Golding’s 1954 fable (the named reprint is UBSP, 2007) maps the island in symbols. The conch is assembly: whoever holds it may speak. When Roger levers the boulder at Castle Rock, the conch explodes and talk-rule dies with Piggy. Fire is double — the rescue-smoke on the mountain, then the island burned to hunt Ralph. Piggy’s glasses are sight, science and the power to light fire; stealing them steals reason. Painted faces unbind shame for the hunt. The pig’s head on a stick, the lord of the flies (Beelzebub in English), speaks to Simon in fever: the beast is not a beast you hunt, it is them. Afterwards it is a pig and a corpse: fever and symbol, not magic realism. The first “beast” the boys fear is a dead parachutist; fear makes a god of a corpse.

Simon, who knows, is killed in the dance, mistaken for the beast. Piggy, the true wise friend, falls forty feet to the rock in the sea. Ralph is hunted like a pig until a naval officer is embarrassed that British boys could not put up a better show. Ralph weeps for the end of innocence, the darkness of man’s heart, and Piggy. A cruiser waits: the laboratory closes; the grown war does not. Piggy is named Piggy by the others, not by his own wish.

Four or five objects at work — conch, glasses, fire, paint, pig’s head — and the officer at the end, so that dystopia includes the uniform, close the note.

8. Lord of the Flies as a dystopia of the pack: discuss the novel with its chief symbols.20 marks · about 500 words

William Golding’s Lord of the Flies (1954; named reprint UBSP Publishers, 2007) is this paper’s long fiction and Unit 1’s set dystopia. A dystopia, in Abrams, is a bad place imagined as a whole society, the opposite of utopia. Schoolboys, crashed, without adults, try to be a British assembly and become a hunt. It is not a police-state novel; it is the pack. Piggy is named by the others. The plot is walked as far as the symbols need: conch, fire, glasses, painted face, parachutist, pig’s head, Simon, Roger’s lever, the officer.

The conch is assembly and a fragile order: whoever holds it may speak. When it explodes under Roger’s boulder at Castle Rock, the talking-game is over. Fire is double: the rescue-smoke on the mountain, then the island fired to smoke Ralph out. Piggy’s glasses are sight, science, the power to light fire; stealing them is stealing reason. Painted faces unbind shame for the hunt. The first beast is a dead parachutist on the mountain; fear makes a god of a corpse. The pig’s head on a stick — the lord of the flies, Beelzebub in English — speaks to Simon in fever: the beast is them. That is existential recognition. Existence first: they were thrown here. The conch was a chosen rule, not a law of nature. Jack’s choir-turned-hunters are another choice. Allusion in the title is brief.

Simon is the one who knows and is killed in the dance, mistaken for the beast. Piggy, the true wise friend, is killed when the conch dies: he falls forty feet to the rock in the sea. Ralph is hunted like a pig. He stumbles onto the beach at the feet of a naval officer who is embarrassed that a pack of British boys could not put up a better show. Ralph weeps for the end of innocence, the darkness of man’s heart, and Piggy’s fall. A cruiser waits. The grown world is still at war. Dystopia does not end when the adult arrives; the laboratory is only closed. The island was not an exception to England; it was England without the uniform.

Among Unit 1’s tools the novel is dystopia plus symbol plus an existential test. Golding may cut into Simon’s head; the book as a whole is not stream of consciousness. The talking head is fever and symbol, then a pig and a corpse — not magic realism. The date 1954 is a mid-century fable, not 1922 fragment-poetry and not postmodern play. It is not postcolonial writing-back: English schoolboys, not Tagore’s village. Schumacher’s inhuman face is organisation and giant tools; Golding’s is the choir with spears. Both distrust limitless force.

The essay therefore defines dystopia, ties it to this plot, spends the middle on symbols at work, and ends with the officer so that the bad place includes the cruiser. Innocence ends; the darkness of man’s heart remains; the true wise friend falls through the air. The order of ruin is rule, sight, pity, then the show the officer wanted and did not get.

Unit 4 · Drama — Shaw, Pygmalion

1. How is the title Pygmalion an allusion? How does Shaw reverse Ovid?2 marks

An allusion is a brief tacit pointer. Shaw’s title glances at Ovid’s sculptor whose statue Galatea comes alive. Higgins is a professor of phonetics, not a god; Eliza Doolittle is a flower girl, not marble. The play of ideas asks whether a duchess can be made from a guttersnipe by changing vowels.

The reverse is Acts IV and V: the statue speaks, throws the slippers, and will not stay grateful. Shaw’s printed sequel has Eliza marry Freddy Eynsford Hill, not Higgins. The letter that makes Doolittle “respectable” is written by Higgins, not by Pickering.

2. What does Act I at Covent Garden already show as the play’s tools?2 marks

Rain, a church portico, late night. Freddy knocks into Eliza Doolittle and scatters her violets. Higgins, the note-taker, is taken for an informer; he places every speaker by vowels. Colonel Pickering, author of a book on spoken Sanskrit, has come from India to meet him. Higgins boasts he could pass the flower girl as a duchess in three months, or as a shop assistant, which takes more cunning. He throws coins; she hears Wimpole Street.

The tools are already named: speech as class-costume; science that can unmake a guttersnipe; a woman who is still a person under the dirt. The play begins in the street, not in the laboratory. No statue stands on the portico.

3. Why does “they done her in” matter at Mrs Higgins’s at-home?2 marks

Act III: Eliza enters magnificent and speaks careful English about the weather and influenza, then, in a rush of her old life, “they done her in,” gin, and a father who drinks. New vowels carry old facts. Clara Eynsford Hill thinks the slang is fashion; Freddy is enchanted; Mrs Eynsford Hill is stricken. Higgins calls it the new small talk.

Phonetics can change the surface and not yet change the store of life underneath. Mrs Higgins repeats Mrs Pearce’s question: what is to become of the girl when the joke is over? The duchess-test happens offstage; this comic peak is unfinished making.

4. Discuss Act IV as the reversal of Ovid and as the play of ideas.8 marks · about 200 words

Midnight, Wimpole Street, after the ball. Higgins and Pickering congratulate themselves: the trick worked; they are tired; they want slippers and bed. Eliza is silent, then blazing. She has won their bet for them and is not even thanked. She is a lady with nowhere to go. She throws the slippers. Higgins is astonished that the creature has feelings. She asks what is to become of her — the question Mrs Pearce asked in Act II and Mrs Higgins in Act III. He suggests marriage or a florist’s shop. She is an object that has been finished and is now in the way. Pickering is kinder and still does not see that the experiment was done on a person. Eliza puts the jewels back and leaves. Freddy is on the pavement. She goes into the night with him, not yet into a settled plot.

Ovid’s sculptor wanted a wife; this sculptor wants his slippers. The play of ideas is sharpest here: class is not only vowels; it is who gets thanked, who owns the success, who may sit by the fire. Higgins’s cruelty in this act is absent-mindedness plus vanity, not a secret love-plot. Eliza’s anger is the beginning of a self that is not a duchess-puppet. Comedy of manners is a cousin — the codes of the house — but the scene is argument, not only etiquette.

Act V still remains: Doolittle in wedding clothes, and Eliza’s thanks to Pickering for treating her as a lady. The statue has spoken; the idea-play asks who the masterpiece belongs to.

5. Pygmalion as a play of ideas: class, speech, and what a person is.8 marks · about 200 words

The course outcome names the play of ideas: argument on stage, not only plot. Shaw’s five rooms — Covent Garden; the Wimpole Street laboratory; Mrs Higgins’s at-home; after the ball; independence — argue whether a person is a voice, a class, or a will. Higgins’s science can drill a duchess-surface in three months. Mrs Pearce and Mrs Higgins ask the moral nerve: a made lady cannot go back to violets, and the maker has not thought of a life. Doolittle sells five pounds of the undeserving poor; Act V makes him “respectable” because Higgins wrote to an American millionaire that he was England’s most original moralist. Middle-class morality is a trap as well as a ladder. Eliza’s last self-possession is not the vowels: she thanks Pickering for treating her as a lady. That treatment, she says, made the difference. She can teach phonetics or marry Freddy and keep a shop. The curtain does not kiss. The sequel is Freddy, a flower shop, Higgins a bachelor of tantrums.

Comedy of manners is a cousin: drawing-room codes, the at-home disaster of “they done her in.” Allusion to Pygmalion and Galatea is the title’s glance, reversed when the statue refuses. The play is not a dystopia and not Golding. Eliza is Cockney London, not a colony; Pickering’s India is a scholar’s travel, not Tagore’s village. Edwardian social nerve sits beside Mansfield’s 1922 cup of tea: both show charity as appetite; Shaw lets the girl keep a trade.

The idea-play on this paper is the shilling lessons, the five pounds, “they done her in,” the slippers, treated as a lady, Freddy not Higgins, and Higgins not Pickering as the letter-writer.

Comedy of manners रिश्तेदार है: बैठक की संहिता, at-home की विपत्ति “they done her in।”

इस पत्र पर विचार-नाटक है शिलिंग पाठ, पाँच पाउंड, “they done her in,” चप्पल, लेडी जैसा व्यवहार, Freddy न कि Higgins, और पत्र-लेखक Higgins न कि Pickering।

6. Discuss Shaw’s Pygmalion as prescribed on this paper: acts, ideas, and the ending Shaw printed.20 marks · about 500 words

G. B. Shaw’s Pygmalion (staged 1913; printed 1916) is the only drama on this paper. The course wants a play of ideas: class, speech, and what a person is, argued in talk. Unit 1 uses the title as allusion to Ovid. Five rooms carry the argument. Act I, Covent Garden: rain, portico, Eliza’s violets, Higgins the note-taker, Pickering from India, the boast about a duchess in three months, coins, Wimpole Street. The street is the social map: who waits under stone, who sells flowers in the wet, who writes down other people’s sounds as specimens. Act II, the laboratory: lamps, phonograph, Mrs Pearce. Eliza will pay a shilling, her proportion of a millionaire’s fee. Pickering bets the cost. Higgins treats her as a squashed cabbage leaf. Mrs Pearce asks what becomes of the girl when the joke is over. Alfred Doolittle wants five pounds, not fifty: he is the undeserving poor and likes it. The contract is speech, money, no love-plot yet.

Act III, Mrs Higgins’s at-home: magnificent Eliza, weather, influenza, then “they done her in.” New vowels, old facts. Clara hears fashion; Freddy is enchanted; Mrs Eynsford Hill is stricken. The ambassador’s garden party happens between III and IV; some later printings add an embassy scene. The point is that the world accepts a voice. Act IV, midnight: slippers, no thanks, “what is to become of me,” jewels put back, Freddy on the pavement. Ovid reversed: the statue speaks; the sculptor wants bed. Act V, next morning: Eliza self-possessed; Doolittle in wedding clothes, victim of a letter Higgins wrote; she thanks Pickering for lady-treatment; she can teach or marry Freddy. Higgins still calls her his masterpiece and still, in his mind, wants slippers fetched. Shaw’s afterword is explicit: she marries Freddy Eynsford Hill; they open a flower shop; Higgins remains a bachelor of science and tantrums. The printed close is not a kiss.

Can a person be separated from a class-voice? Higgins says he treats everyone the same, which is not respect. Pickering’s courtesy does more than the drills. Doolittle proves that money plus “morality” can imprison as well as raise. Eliza’s independence is economic and verbal: she can sell the teaching she was given. Comedy of manners is the drawing-room cousin; the play of ideas is the argument. Allusion is the title; the slippers are comfort the men own. The play is not dystopia, not Golding’s pack, not Unit 5’s colony. Eliza is Cockney; Pickering’s Sanskrit book is not Tagore’s post office. It is not a romance whose prize is the professor.

Acts IV and V must take real space, not only the portico joke. Mrs Pearce, the five pounds, the later bequest, “they done her in,” and the letter-writer — Higgins, not Pickering — belong in the middle. Eliza walks from violets to self-possession: a lady is made by how she is treated, not only by how she sounds. Higgins remains genius, vanity, and a missing life-plan. The ending is Shaw’s sequel, a shop of her own, a phonograph without a wife.

The set play, then, is portico, shilling, five pounds, at-home slang, slippers, treated as a lady, Freddy, and no kiss.

अंक III, मिसेज़ Higgins का at-home: शानदार Eliza, मौसम, इन्फ्लुएंज़ा, फिर “they done her in।”

मिसेज़ Pearce, पाँच पाउंड, बाद की वसीयत, “they done her in,” और पत्र-लेखक — Higgins, Pickering नहीं — मध्य में आएँ।

Unit 5 · Voices from India

1. Explain Gandhi’s word Englistan in Hind Swaraj, chapter 4.2 marks

Chapter 4, “What is Swaraj?” (Navajivan / Mehrotra), is a dialogue of Reader and Editor (1909). The Reader wants the English to leave, then keep their constitution, army and splendour — Canada or South Africa with our flag. The Editor’s verdict: we want English rule without the Englishman. You want the tiger’s nature, but not the tiger. You would make India English; and when it becomes English, it will be called not Hindustan but Englistan. This is not the Swaraj I want.

The chapter is early anti-colonial writing. Swaraj here is a political-ethical refusal of Englistan, not a lyric symbol. Schumacher later quotes Gandhi on production by the masses; that sentence is Unit 3, not this page.

4, “What is Swaraj?”

2. Why is Bharati’s “Phoenix” two panels? Name both.2 marks

Prema Nandakumar, Sahitya Akademi: “Phoenix (Bharat Dying and Resurgent Bharat).” Starred. The syllabus spelling Subramaniam is a misprint; the poet is Subramania Bharati. Panel one is lament: the mother-land under foreign rule, a body that looks finished. Panel two drives out the weak-shouldered mannikin, the shrunken heart, and calls the shining eyes, the steely heart, honeyed speech, the broad-shouldered Titan.

Death is not the last fact if the bird’s nature is to return. An answer needs both the dying and the rising. “Thirst for Freedom” is the next poem in Nandakumar (p. 73); it is not on this list. The set “Freedom” is the tear-watered crop (p. 70).

Prema Nandakumar, साहित्य अकादेमी: “Phoenix (Bharat Dying and Resurgent Bharat)।”

“Thirst for Freedom” Nandakumar

3. Who is Ratan in Tagore’s “The Postmaster,” and what does the leaving show?2 marks

Radice’s Penguin text, pages 10–18, is the named translation; the story is 1891 and starred. Ratan is an orphan village girl in Ulapur, a Bengal village with an indigo factory. She fetches water, minds the house and talks. The homesick Calcutta postmaster teaches her to read; in his fever she nurses him as Dada. When transfer comes she asks to be taken to his home; he laughs, offers extra money; she refuses and does not say goodbye. He takes the river-boat and tells himself he is a practical man.

The nerve is two people in a shed. He is a homesick Bengali clerk of the system, not a cartoon of the Raj. The cruelty is ordinary: transfer, laugh, coin, river.

4. Explain the following with reference to the context: “Freedom, Mother! I shall not forget / to worship thee.”8 marks · RTC · about 200 words

Reference. The lines close a stanza of Subramania Bharati’s “Ode to Freedom” in Prema Nandakumar, Poems of Subramania Bharati, Sahitya Akademi — starred in Unit 5. Freedom is addressed as Mother, Swatantra Devi. The set Bharati lyrics are three: “Phoenix,” “Freedom” (the tear-watered crop, p. 70), and this Ode. “Thirst for Freedom” (p. 73) is not on the list.

Context. Even divorced from the joys of the hearth and consigned to dungeons dark; even forced to exchange a time of cheer for days of gloom; even if ten million troubles raged to consume the speaker entire — the worship does not stop. The Ode is the ceremonial twin of “Freedom,” where the crop was raised not with water, O lord, but with tears, and the prayer is: grant us our boon of freedom ere long. Phoenix supplies the national bird: dying Bharat and the resurgent Titan. Together the three lyrics are public nationalist song, decades before 1947.

Explanation. The extract is Unit 1’s Post Colonialism as early anti-colonial lyric: a colonised voice claiming a goddess of freedom from inside the dungeon. Beside Yeats’s custom and ceremony, Bharati’s ceremony is Freedom herself. Beside Owen’s pity of war, this speaker wants an end of political slavery. Beside Gandhi’s cool dialogue, the Ode shouts worship. Nandakumar, the Mother, the dungeon, and the two sister poems complete the set of three. The extract is worship in the dark, not a biography of Pondicherry.

पंक्तियाँ सुब्रह्मण्य भारती के “Ode to Freedom” के एक स्तंभ का अंत हैं, Prema Nandakumar, Poems of Subramania Bharati, साहित्य अकादेमी — इकाई 5 में तारांकित।

5. Explain the following with reference to the context: Ratan asks to be taken to the postmaster’s home; he laughs and calls it impossible.8 marks · RTC · about 200 words

Reference. The turn is from Rabindranath Tagore’s “The Postmaster,” in William Radice, Selected Short Stories (Penguin, 1991, pp. 10–18), starred in Unit 5. The story is 1891. Ulapur, a Bengal village with an indigo factory; a Calcutta postmaster in a shed; Ratan, an orphan who fetches water.

Context. Lonely, he has told her of his mother and sister; she has taken those relations as hers in play. He has taught her to read; she is quick. In the rains he falls ill; she nurses him as Dada. Recovery makes him apply for transfer; it is granted. She hears he is going and asks to come — she will do the housework. He laughs. He offers extra money; she refuses and does not come to say goodbye. He takes the river-boat, thinks for a moment of turning back, then calls himself a practical man. The last look is Ratan wandering near the shed.

Explanation. The extract holds the story’s ordinary cruelty: a family made in talk and lessons, then cancelled by a laugh and a coin. Postcolonial climate: an outpost of the system — post, transfer, English-company factory — that does not see the girl it used for company. He is a homesick Bengali clerk, not a cartoon of the Raj. Gandhi’s chapter is theory of Swaraj; this page is a leaving. Bharati’s Phoenix raises a nation from ash; Tagore leaves one person on the bank. Imagery: monsoon, river, the factory at a distance. The indigo office and the refused money belong with the shed and the boat.

6. Write a note on Gandhi’s “What is Swaraj?” (Hind Swaraj, chapter 4).8 marks · about 200 words

Hind Swaraj (1909) is a dialogue: Reader and Editor. Chapter 4 is short. The Reader has heard of Congress and Partition and unrest; he wants the Editor’s Swaraj. Many mouths say “drive the English out” without asking why. If we got all we wanted, would we still need to drive them away? The Reader wants only that they leave. After withdrawal he would keep their constitution, army and government. Why drive them? They impoverish India, take money, reserve posts, keep us in slavery, behave insolently. The Editor tests him: if they stopped taking money, became gentle, gave responsible posts — still harmful? The Reader says it is like asking whether a tiger is safe if he changes his nature. Self-government like Canada or South Africa is useless until we have the same powers: flag, navy, army, splendour, a voice that rings through the world.

The Editor’s sentence: we want English rule without the Englishman. You want the tiger’s nature, but not the tiger. You would make India English; and when it becomes English, it will be called not Hindustan but Englistan. This is not the Swaraj that I want. The Reader would copy Spencer, Mill and the Mother of Parliaments. The Editor asks for patience: he will show that what the Reader calls Swaraj is not truly Swaraj. The rest of the book — civilisation, lawyers, doctors, railways — is not this chapter.

Unit 1: early anti-colonial writing. Swaraj here is a political-ethical refusal of Englistan, not a lyric symbol. Beside Bharati’s shout, Gandhi is cool dialogue. Beside Schumacher, the economist quotes Gandhi on production by the masses; this page is the soul of home rule, not intermediate tools. Reader, Editor, tiger, Englistan: that is chapter 4.

7. Voices from India: Gandhi, Bharati and Tagore as prescribed on this paper.20 marks · about 500 words

Unit 5 is three voices. Gandhi, “What is Swaraj?” — chapter 4 of Hind Swaraj (Navajivan / Mehrotra). Subramania Bharati (the syllabus prints Subramaniam), three lyrics in Nandakumar’s Sahitya Akademi text: “Phoenix,” “Freedom,” “Ode to Freedom” — starred. Tagore, “The Postmaster,” Radice Penguin pp. 10–18 — starred. Acharya Nandkishore’s Swaraj, Aadhar aur Aayam is recommended climate, not a fourth set book. Postcolonialism, as Unit 1 uses the heading, covers this early writing. Schumacher’s Gandhi quotation in Unit 3 is not this chapter.

Gandhi’s chapter is dialogue. The Reader wants the English gone and their machine left behind — flag, navy, splendour, Spencer and Mill. The Editor names that desire Englistan: English rule without the Englishman, the tiger’s nature without the tiger. That is not the Swaraj he wants. Cool, short, ethical-political. Bharati is the shout beside that coolness. Phoenix is two panels: Bharat dying under foreign rule, then the weak-shouldered mannikin driven away and the Titan called. “Freedom” (p. 70, not “Thirst” p. 73) is the crop raised with tears, not water, and the prayer for the boon ere long. The Ode worships Freedom Mother from the dungeon: hearth-joys lost, gloom in place of cheer, ten million troubles — I shall not forget to worship thee. Allusion to the phoenix is classical; the job now is Indian resurgence, decades before 1947. Tagore is neither dialogue nor ode. Ulapur, indigo, a shed, Ratan, lessons, Dada, transfer, a laugh, refused coins, a river-boat, a practical man. The outpost of the system does not see the girl. He is a homesick Bengali clerk, not Higgins and not a cartoon Raj. The cruelty is ordinary.

Read as a triangle, not as three separate notes on patriotism. Gandhi refuses Englistan as a false home-rule. Bharati wants a resurgent people who are not that English copy — the Titan is not the Reader’s navy-splendour. Tagore shows what a small office of the same system does to one child when a transfer comes: no phoenix rises on that bank. Thumboo’s “Words” (Unit 2) is a cousin of language after empire, not a fourth Indian voice unless the question crosses units. Shaw’s Eliza is Cockney London. Golding’s island is English schoolboys. Smith’s “Joy” is not a freedom-crop.

The heading is defined from Unit 1; each voice then takes concrete detail: Englistan; mannikin, tears and dungeon; Ulapur and the boat. “Freedom” is not “Thirst for Freedom.” Ratan is a girl in a shed before she is an allegory of India. Bharati and Tagore may supply reference to context; Gandhi is unstarred, but Englistan is the sentence the chapter is built on. If the question names only Tagore, Ulapur still shows the office as a colonial fact. If it names freedom, Bharati’s three titles stand beside Gandhi’s Englistan so freedom is not one English synonym.

Voices from India on this paper are therefore Reader and Editor; dying and resurgent Bharat; the tear-crop and the Mother in the dark; Ratan, Dada and the boat. The tones are dialogue, dungeon-worship and river.

गाँधी, “What is Swaraj?” टैगोर, “The Postmaster,” Radice Penguin पृ. 10–18 — तारांकित।

“Freedom” “Thirst for Freedom” नहीं।
