Unit IV · Reading skills

The official heading is Reading skills: purpose, process, and methodologies of reading; skimming and scanning techniques; reading comprehension (academic texts, news, instructions). Unit II was the ear; this unit is the eye on verbal writing. Writing your own page is Unit V.

Method and comprehension follow Kumar–Pushpalata, Crystal, and Denys Thompson’s Reading and Discrimination (Chatto & Windus, 1954 — the PDF’s “Denys and Thomson”). Skimming maps the whole; scanning hunts one fact; intensive reading takes a hard short text; comprehension proves the meaning arrived without adding a second text.

1 Purpose of reading

Reading is getting meaning from written verbal communication. Kumar and Pushpalata treat it as an active skill, not eye-movement. Crystal reminds you that writing is language made still so that a reader who was not in the room can still hear it. Denys Thompson’s old Reading and Discrimination (the PDF prints Denys and Thomson) asks the next step: not only what the lines say, but what kind of voice they are — fact, puff, instruction, news.

The official first word is purpose. You read to learn (an academic paragraph), to act (instructions), to know what happened (news), to find one fact (scanning, next lessons), or to enjoy a page (not the drill of this internal paper, but still a purpose). Purpose decides speed and method. A scholarship notice is not read like a poem. A research paragraph is not read like a platform board.

Match purpose to Unit I. Inform, instruct, record sit on the page as they sat in the mouth. Name the job of this text: learn, act, find a fact, or know what happened. Units II and III were sound. This unit is the eye.

2 Process of reading

The process is what the mind does with marks on a page. A usable classroom sequence, from Kumar: (1) preview — title, headings, first and last lines, any number or date; (2) read for gist — what the whole is about; (3) read for detail — names, steps, exceptions; (4) check — did the purpose of the reading get done? Feedback here is to yourself or to a question paper, not a nod to a speaker.

The mind does not photograph every letter. It samples headings and key lines, then fills detail where the purpose needs it. Discrimination (Thompson) sits in step 3–4: is this a claim, a fact, an instruction, an advertisement dressed as news? Noise in reading is small type, a second language, fatigue, and the phone — Unit I’s barriers on the page.

Do not confuse process with method (next lesson). Process is the inner cycle: preview → gist → detail → check. Method is the chosen speed: skimming, scanning, intensive, extensive. A student who starts copying from line one without a preview has skipped the process.

3 Methodologies of reading

Methodologies (the PDF’s word) are the named ways of reading. Four are enough. Skimming and scanning have their own official bullets and the next two lessons. Intensive reading is slow, full, for a short hard text: a definition, a legal line, an academic paragraph you must answer on. Extensive reading is longer, lighter, for flow: a news feature, a chapter you need as background. Silent reading is the default for comprehension.

Choose the method from the purpose. Instructions and academic definitions want intensive. A newspaper page when you only need the cricket score wants scanning. A first look at a long report wants skimming, then intensive on one section. Mixing methods is allowed; keep the names apart: skimming is not scanning.

Thompson’s “discrimination” is a method of attention inside intensive reading: you judge tone and worth. It is not a fifth speed. Do not import Unit V’s paragraph-writing here. Reading methods take meaning off a page; writing methods put it on.

MethodSpeed and widthUse on this paper
SkimmingFast; whole surfaceGist of a news page or a long notice
ScanningFast; one targetA time, a name, a gate, a score

Scanningतेज़; एक निशानासमय, नाम, गेट, स्कोर
Intensiveधीमा; हर पंक्तिशैक्षिक अनुच्छेद; निर्देश
Extensiveस्थिर; लंबा फैलावपृष्ठभूमि, फीचर

4 Skimming

Skimming is reading quickly for the gist — what the text is about as a whole — not for every date. Kumar: title, sub-headings, first sentences of paragraphs, any boxed or bold line, the close. You do not move your finger under every word. You sample the peaks.

Use skimming when the pile is large and your purpose is to decide: is this the right article? what is the news in one line? should I now read intensively? A student who skims a three-page circular learns: meeting, Friday, all Semester V — then goes back for the room number if needed (that second move may be scanning).

Skimming is not skipping in a panic, and it is not scanning. Scanning hunts one known item. Skimming builds a map. If the task is the main idea of the passage, you skim (and then check). If it is which paragraph holds the date, you scan.

5 Scanning

Scanning is reading quickly for a known target: a name, a time, a number, a word in a list. The eye does not build the whole map; it hunts. Railway boards, indexes, dictionaries, result PDFs, and the airport screen are scanning jobs. You already know what you want: 20498, SG 2941, roll 2145, “gate.”

Method: picture the shape of the target (digits look different from words); run the eye down columns; stop only on a match; then read the few words around it so that you do not steal the wrong 2145. Scanning without a check is how people board the wrong coach. Completeness here is local: the number plus the word next to it.

Pair with Unit II. Listening to an announcement is scanning with the ear. Reading the same facts on a board is scanning with the eye. If both disagree, do not guess — ask (Unit III) or wait for a repeat. Skimming a news page then scanning for the score is a normal two-step; keep the names apart in an answer.

6 Comprehension — academic texts, news, instructions

Comprehension is proving that the meaning arrived. The PDF names three sources: academic texts, news, instructions. Kumar: gist first, then detail; answers from the page, not from general knowledge; keep the question’s tense. Thompson: discriminate — a news report should be facts in order; an academic paragraph may define and then limit; instructions should be steps you can do. Inference is allowed only when the lines together force it. A title covers the whole, not the last sentence.

Academic: terms, definitions, because-clauses; intensive reading; do not turn a definition into a story. News: who, what, when, where, what next; watch for a headline that shouts more than the body (discrimination). Instructions: numbered or implied steps in time-order; verbs that tell you to act; if a step is missing, completeness has failed — do not invent a dangerous step.

Project link: an interview report still needs you to read your notes; a video script still needs you to read instructions. Comprehension is Unit I’s decoding on a page.

Academic. Feedback is the receiver’s return signal that a message arrived. Without feedback the sender cannot know whether decoding succeeded.

News. Bikaner, 18 September. The 20498 Intercity to Delhi left forty minutes late after a signal fault at the outer cabin. Railway staff said platform 3 was unchanged. No injury was reported.

Instructions. To submit the internal project: 1. Choose one option (interview / audio-video / event report). 2. Write 500–800 words or record 3–5 minutes. 3. Put your name, class and roll on the first page or in the file name. 4. Submit by the date on the notice-board.
