Unit 1 · Literary terms, age and movements
1. Define aestheticism. Illustrate from a text prescribed on this paper.2 marks
Aestheticism is the late-nineteenth-century claim that art exists for beauty, not for a moral lesson or a social use. Abrams: art is an autonomous end. The French tag is l’art pour l’art. Walter Pater’s intensity of sensation is the English critical voice; Oscar Wilde is the set name on this paper.
The set book is The Picture of Dorian Gray. The Preface says there is no moral or immoral book, only well or badly written; all art is quite useless (quite = completely). The portrait then carries the stain the beautiful face refuses. Tennyson and Hopkins argue grief, faith, or God’s pattern; they are not this doctrine.
The Picture of Dorian Gray है।
2. What is a dramatic monologue? Name the set poem.2 marks
A dramatic monologue is a poem spoken by one person who is not the poet, at a revealing moment, to a silent auditor. Abrams: one speaker, a situation, a listener who shapes what is said, and a character who gives himself away. Irony is the method. It is not a soliloquy and not the poet’s own lyric “I.”
The set poem is Browning’s “My Last Duchess” (1842). The Duke of Ferrara shows a painted wife to the Count’s silent envoy, then “I gave commands; / Then all smiles stopped together.” Tennyson’s mariners speak as a chorus; Yeats’s “The Second Coming” is a vision: neither has this silent listener in a room.
निर्धारित कविता ब्राउनिंग की “My Last Duchess” (1842) है। फेरारा का ड्यूक चित्रित पत्नी काउंट के चुप दूत को दिखाता है, फिर “I gave commands; / Then all smiles stopped together।”
3. Define short story. Why is Hawthorne the exhibit on this paper?2 marks
A short story is brief prose fiction, tight in time, place and cast, aimed at one pressure or revelation. Abrams: more concentrated than a novel; often a single action and a close. It is not an essay, not a play, and not a novel chapter torn out.
Hawthorne’s “Dr. Heidegger’s Experiment” is the set story: one room, a Fountain of Youth, four friends who grow young, repeat their vanities, smash the vase, and age again. On this paper Stevenson, Huxley, Belloc and Chesterton are essays; Chekhov’s The Seagull is a play; Wilde is a novel.
4. Distinguish inscape and instress, with “Spring and Fall.”2 marks
Inscape is Hopkins’s word for the inner distinctive design that makes a thing this thing. Instress is the force that holds that pattern, and the stress by which it strikes a beholder. In Hopkins the energy is finally God’s. Inscape is not scenery; instress is not ordinary strain.
In “Spring and Fall,” Goldengrove unleaving has the inscape of mortality in falling gold. Instress is what hits Margaret before she has the word death: “It is Margaret you mourn for.” Arnold’s sea in “Dover Beach” is a symbol of withdrawing faith, not inscape.
Instress वह है जो मार्गारेट पर शब्द death से पहले लगता है: “It is Margaret you mourn for।”
5. What is sprung rhythm? Illustrate from the set Hopkins lyric.2 marks
Sprung rhythm is Hopkins’s metre. Abrams: the line is counted by stresses, not by a fixed syllable-count. A foot has one stress and variable slack. Neighbouring stresses can stand together; the line “springs.” It is not free verse: the lifts are still numbered. It is not rhyme.
“Spring and Fall” opens with four lifts in a short line: Már-ga-rét, áre you gríev-ing. “It ís the blight” forces a stress on is. Tennyson’s ABBA tetrameter, Browning’s pentameter couplets, and Arnold’s irregular beach-lines are counted differently; they are not sprung rhythm.
“Spring and Fall” छोटी पंक्ति में चार उठान से खुलती है: Márgarét, áre you gríeving। “It ís the blight” is
6. What is utilitarianism? Name one set collision on this paper.2 marks
Utilitarianism is the moral theory that the right act produces the greatest happiness for the greatest number. This paper names Mill’s Utilitarianism. Bentham made use and a pleasure-calculus public; Mill keeps the test but argues for higher and lower pleasures: poetry is not a pin-game. The word also names a Victorian temper: measure schools, laws, even churches, by results.
The clearest imaginative refusal on this paper is the choric song of “The Lotos-Eaters”: the mariners will not toil; rest is an end. Wilde’s Preface — “All art is quite useless” — refuses the same usefulness-test applied to books.
7. What is Darwinism as this paper uses the term?2 marks
Darwinism, in Bowler’s sense, is the biological theory of On the Origin of Species (1859): species change; natural selection favours what survives; human beings belong inside that nature. The syllabus wants the shock to faith and to design. Distinguish biology from later “social Darwinism” (competition treated as an ethic).
In Memoriam is 1850, nine years before Origin. Lyric 54 already trusts that good is the goal of ill, including “taints of blood.” After 1859 readers reread that trust. “Dover Beach” (1867) is the set post-Origin lyric: the Sea of Faith withdraws. The poems do not name Darwin as a character.
On the Origin of Species
8. Write a note on the Victorian Age and the Industrial Revolution, with reference to the set poems.8 marks · about 200 words
The Victorian Age is the reign of Queen Victoria, 1837–1901. This paper splits it into Early (1837–1851), Middle (1851–1870) and Late (1870–1901). Houghton’s “frame of mind” for the middle decades is earnestness: work, duty, the home, a public moral language, and, beside them, a growing doubt. Sanders treats the same years as the age when the novel and a public poetry had to live with reform, empire, city crowds and science. Yeats’s “The Second Coming” (1919) is prescribed in Unit 2, but it is not a Victorian poem; it is a later contrast.
The Industrial Revolution, in Ashton’s classic sense, is the economic shift of about 1760–1830: machines, factories, coal, cotton, a new speed of production. Victorian literature lives in the consequences. Railways and steam shrink distance; towns swallow villages; clock-time disciplines labour. 1851, the Great Exhibition, is the hinge into Middle Victorian confidence — glass, iron, the world’s goods in London. The same decades produce smoke, slums, and a religious question: if nature and society are engines, where is Providence? This list does not set a Dickens novel, yet the machine-age is still the ground under Arnold’s grating world and Tennyson’s tired mariners.
The set pages breathe this weather. In “The Lotos-Eaters” sailors refuse toil; the island is a dream of rest against the Victorian gospel of labour. In Memoriam lyric 7 is a dark house on a bald, unlovely street in drizzle — grief in a modern town, not a Romantic lake. Lyric 54 tries to keep faith while nature looks pitiless. In “Dover Beach” the Sea of Faith was once full; now there is a melancholy, long, withdrawing roar, and a last picture of a darkling plain and ignorant armies. Wilde’s late-Victorian London is luxury and a studio, not a mill, but it is still the city the century built. The Industrial Revolution is that material weather, not a school of metres.
9. Write a note on Victorian poetry as this paper uses the heading.8 marks · about 200 words
Victorian poetry in Armstrong’s sense is not “weaker Romanticism.” It is public speech under pressure: the poet as laureate and as doubter, the dramatic mask, the long elegy, the lyric of culture against a machine world. Form often stays regular (Tennyson’s ABBA stanza, Browning’s couplets) even when faith does not. Late in the reign Hopkins breaks the ear with sprung rhythm. Yeats, on this paper, has already crossed into modern apocalypse. Name Victorian poetry as a climate with several voices, not as one smooth style.
The set lyrics have clear jobs. Tennyson, Poet Laureate from 1850: “The Lotos-Eaters” (1832, revised 1842) — choric wish to cease from labour; In Memoriam (1850), lyrics 7 and 54 — private grief in a street, then a willed trust that good is the goal of ill. Browning: the dramatic monologue as character and power (“My Last Duchess,” 1842). Arnold: “Dover Beach” (1867) — faith as a receding sea, love as the last shore. Hopkins: “Spring and Fall” (1880) — inscape of mortality in a child’s grove, sprung line. Yeats: “The Second Coming” (1919) — already modern; the centre cannot hold. Armstrong’s politics sit in different keys: idle mariners against work; a Duke’s command over a wife’s smile; armies on a darkling plain.
Romantic poetry trusted imagination, nature as teacher, and the lyric “I.” Victorian poetry still uses landscape (lotos island, Dover shingle, Goldengrove), but the question has changed: can meaning survive factory, geology, and the death of a friend? “Dover Beach” has a sea, yet it is a lyric of doubt, not a Romantic nature ode. “The Lotos-Eaters” is lush, yet it is a choric refusal of labour, not a Pre-Raphaelite canvas. If the question is “Victorian poetry,” the centre is Tennyson, Browning, Arnold and Hopkins; Yeats is the paper’s last, already modern, contrast.
10. Write a note on the Victorian novel, with Wilde’s Dorian Gray as the set book.8 marks · about 200 words
The Victorian novel is the age’s great prose form: long, often serial fiction of social life, class, money, marriage, work and conscience. Sanders: the novel becomes the central English kind of the mid-century. Houghton’s earnestness is at home here — a plot that educates, a narrator who judges, a world of houses and streets that claims to be the real England. It is realism as a public contract, not a romance of knights. This paper does not set Dickens, Eliot or a Brontë. The heading is still in Unit 1 because the age is the novel’s age, and because the one set novel answers that age from the other end.
The set novel is Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray (1890–91). It uses the century’s city, studio, dinner table and fashion, but it inverts the moral-education plot. A Victorian three-decker would usually punish vice and reward duty in the open. Wilde’s Preface denies that a book is moral or immoral; the portrait then hides the punishment in the attic. Dorian Gray is a late-Victorian novel of aestheticism, not a Condition-of-England novel. Hawthorne’s “Dr. Heidegger’s Experiment” is an American short story, one sitting; Chekhov’s The Seagull is drama. Stevenson and Chesterton write essays, not novels.
So the heading has two rooms. As a historical form, the Victorian novel is the social-moral long book of class and conscience. As the set book on this paper, it is Wilde’s aesthetic inversion: the age trusted a moral plot; this novel refuses that trust in the Preface and then, in the portrait, cannot quite escape a moral. The form the century believed in, and the one book the syllabus actually names, must both appear in the answer.
The Picture of Dorian Gray (1890–91) है।
11. Write a note on the Oxford Movement and Pre-Raphaelitism.8 marks · about 200 words
The Oxford Movement (Tractarianism) is a church movement, not first a school of metres. It begins in Oxford in the 1830s — conventionally with John Keble’s 1833 sermon on national apostasy — and gathers John Henry Newman, E. B. Pusey and the Tracts for the Times. The claim: the Church of England is apostolic, sacramental, catholic in the old sense; it is not a department of the state and not a useful moral club. Against liberal Protestant thinning, and against a utilitarian measuring of religion by social happiness, the Tractarians restore ritual, tradition, and the authority of the early Church. Newman’s conversion to Rome in 1845 is the crisis everyone names. Houghton’s Victorian mind is religious even when it doubts; this movement is one strong religious answer, as utilitarianism and later Darwinism are others.
On this paper the poet closest to a sacramental seeing is Hopkins — convert, Jesuit, writer of inscape as God’s pattern in things. He is not a Tractarian pamphleteer, and “Spring and Fall” is not a tract. Still, the Catholic-sacramental eye that finds a grove’s thisness belongs to the century’s recovered seriousness about sacrament. Arnold is the other pole: son of Thomas Arnold of Rugby, who opposed the Tractarians; “Dover Beach” is liberal-agnostic melancholy, a withdrawing sea of faith, not a return to the altar. Tennyson’s lyric 54 is a private theodicy, not Oxford’s apostolic church. Wilde’s aestheticism is another late religion, of beauty, not of the Tracts.
Pre-Raphaelitism begins as a painters’ brotherhood in 1848: Dante Gabriel Rossetti, William Holman Hunt, John Everett Millais, and the short-lived PRB. Prettejohn: they reject the academic smoothness associated with Raphael’s followers — brown shadows, generalised bodies. They want brilliant colour, sharp natural detail, and often medieval or biblical subjects taken seriously. No Rossetti lyric is prescribed. Exact looking at a leaf feeds the cult of the beautiful object that aestheticism will push further, yet the PRB still usually wants a moral or sacred story; Wilde’s Preface drops that story. Hopkins’s hunger for the inscape of a grove shares the PRB refusal of a vague general tree, though his end is Jesuit. The heading therefore names 1848 and Hunt–Millais–Rossetti, then lights two set pages: Wilde’s beauty-cult and, by exact seeing, Hopkins.
12. Discuss the age and movements of this paper — Victorian Age and Industrial Revolution, Victorian poetry and novel, Oxford Movement, utilitarianism, Darwinism, Pre-Raphaelitism, aestheticism — with reference to the prescribed texts.20 marks · about 500 words
The course is titled 19th Century Literature; Unit 1’s official movements are Victorian. Dates follow Victoria’s reign, split into Early (1837–1851), Middle (1851–1870) and Late (1870–1901). Each heading belongs on a set page. Hawthorne’s American short story and Chekhov’s Russian play (1896) are nineteenth-century in date, not British-Victorian headings. Yeats (1919) is prescribed and is not swallowed into 1837–1901.
The Victorian Age is Victoria’s reign. Houghton’s middle-decade earnestness is work, duty, home, public morals, and a growing doubt. The Industrial Revolution, Ashton’s core about 1760–1830, is the ground, not a sixth poetic school: factory, railway, city labour, the 1851 Exhibition. Set weather: lotos-rest against toil; lyric 7’s bald street; Dover’s darkling plain. Victorian poetry in Armstrong is public speech under pressure — laureate and doubter, mask, elegy, culture against machinery. Tennyson’s “The Lotos-Eaters” and In Memoriam 7 and 54; Browning’s “My Last Duchess”; Arnold’s “Dover Beach”; Hopkins’s “Spring and Fall.” Yeats is the paper’s last, already modern, contrast: the centre cannot hold. “Dover Beach” has a sea, yet it is a lyric of withdrawn faith, not a Romantic nature ode.
The Victorian novel is the age’s central prose: serial, class, money, marriage, conscience, a narrator who judges. Dickens is not set. The set novel is Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray, a late-Victorian aesthetic inversion: the Preface denies a moral book; the portrait hides the punishment in the attic. It is the exhibit of aestheticism and also of its cost. Aestheticism, in Abrams, is art for beauty, not for use: l’art pour l’art, Pater’s gem-like flame, Wilde’s “all art is quite useless.” It is a revolt inside the same century. Pre-Raphaelitism (PRB, 1848: Rossetti, Hunt, Millais) still usually wants a moral or sacred story in exact colour; Wilde drops the sermon and keeps the cult of the beautiful object. No Rossetti lyric is prescribed. Hopkins’s exact eye shares the refusal of a vague general tree; his end is Jesuit, not brotherhood painting.
The Oxford Movement (Keble 1833, Newman, Pusey, the Tracts) restores an apostolic, sacramental church against a useful moral club. Hopkins’s inscape is the literary neighbour; Arnold’s withdrawing Sea of Faith is the opposed shore. Utilitarianism, Mill after Bentham, judges the right act by the greatest happiness of the greatest number, with higher and lower pleasures. Lotos-rest and Wilde’s useless art are the set collisions. Darwinism is the 1859 shock of natural selection. Lyric 54 (1850) may be reread beside evolution; it does not quote the Origin. “Dover Beach” (1867) lives in the post-Origin air. Biology is distinct from later social Darwinism. The five literary terms sit on the same pages: aestheticism–Wilde; dramatic monologue–Browning; short story–Hawthorne; inscape, instress, sprung rhythm–Hopkins.
The map is therefore this. Ground: Industrial Revolution. Climate: Victorian Age, three decades. Voices: Tennyson, Browning, Arnold, Hopkins as Victorian poetry; Wilde as the novel of aesthetic revolt; Hawthorne as the short story, not the Victorian novel; Chekhov as drama; Yeats as 1919. Church and science: Oxford Movement, utilitarianism, Darwinism. Looking: Pre-Raphaelitism feeding, then differing from, aestheticism. Each heading is defined and then tied to one set page. Pope, Dickens, a Rossetti lyric, or Darwin as a character inside the poems do not belong on this list.
टेनिसन का “The Lotos-Eaters” और In Memoriam 7 तथा 54; ब्राउनिंग की “My Last Duchess”; आर्नल्ड का “Dover Beach”; हॉप्किन्स का “Spring and Fall।”
The Picture of Dorian Gray
Unit 2 · Poetry
1. Identify the poem that begins “‘Courage!’ he said, and pointed toward the land.” Name the form of the first movement.2 marks
The line opens Tennyson’s “The Lotos-Eaters” (1832; revised 1842), the first set lyric of Unit 2. The story is Homeric: Odysseus’s men taste the lotos and lose the will to sail. The first movement is narrative, in Spenserian stanzas (nine lines, the last an alexandrine). It is not a dramatic monologue. A narrator lands them; then they will sing as “we.”
The island is always afternoon: downward smoke of streams, slow-dropping veils of thinnest lawn (fine cloth, not grass). They sit between sun and moon and the oar already seems weary. Victorian labour is the thing they put down. The choric song, with its oath to lie reclined, is the second movement.
2. Explain “I gave commands; / Then all smiles stopped together.”2 marks
The couplet is the hinge of Browning’s “My Last Duchess” (1842), Unit 1’s dramatic monologue in practice. The Duke of Ferrara tells the Count’s silent envoy that his last duchess ranked a nine-hundred-years-old name with a sunset, cherries, a white mule. He would not stoop to explain. Then the commands. Then the smiles stop. The painted woman still stands as if alive.
We hear courtesy; we infer murder. Stoop is the keyword. The envoy is being shown the rule for the next bride. Last owned rarity: Neptune taming a sea-horse, bronze by Claus of Innsbruck, like the painted wife.
3. What is a gyre in Yeats’s “The Second Coming”? What is Spiritus Mundi?2 marks
A gyre is Yeats’s image of history as a widening spiral (two cones turning against each other in his system). “Turning and turning in the widening gyre / The falcon cannot hear the falconer”: civilisation has flown beyond the centre that once steered it. Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold; mere anarchy is loosed. The lyric is 1919, prescribed here, not Victorian.
Spiritus Mundi is Yeats’s name for the store of images in the world’s soul, from which a seer pulls a picture he did not invent: a desert shape, lion body, head of a man. The “Second Coming” is not a gentle Christ; it is a rough beast slouching toward Bethlehem to be born. It is a vision, not a dramatic monologue.
“Turning and turning in the widening gyre / The falcon cannot hear the falconer”:
4. What is the argument of In Memoriam lyric 54? Why does the Darwin date matter?2 marks
Lyric 54 is five ABBA tetrameter quatrains of willed faith in the 1850 elegy for Hallam. It trusts that good is the final goal of ill — nature’s pangs, sins of will, defects of doubt, taints of blood. Then the check: “Behold, we know not anything.” He is an infant crying in the night, with no language but a cry. The movement is trust, then “we know not,” then the child.
The lyric is 1850; Origin of Species is 1859. After 1859 readers reread “taints of blood” beside natural selection. The age paired Tennyson with Darwin; the lyric itself does not quote the Origin. Beside lyric 7’s street-grief, 54 tries to keep Providence. Beside “Dover Beach” (1867), it still trusts.
फिर रोक: “Behold, we know not anything।”
5. Explain the following with reference to the context: “Dark house, by which once more I stand / Here in the long unlovely street.”8 marks · about 200 words
Reference. These are the opening lines of Tennyson’s In Memoriam A.H.H. lyric 7, from the 1850 elegy for Arthur Henry Hallam, dead in 1833. The form is the In Memoriam stanza: iambic tetrameter, rhyme ABBA, three enclosed quatrains. The voice is the poet’s own “I,” not a mask: elegiac lyric, not dramatic monologue.
Context. The house is Hallam’s, in a London street. The next lines wait for a hand that can be clasped no more. He cannot sleep; like a guilty thing he creeps at earliest morning to the door. “He is not here; but far away / The noise of life begins again.” Through drizzle, on the bald street, the blank day breaks. The three quatrains are three rooms: the dark house and the waiting heart; the creeping at dawn; the street that starts without him. Bald here means bare, treeless, unlovely — an industrial-age town, not a Romantic lake.
Explanation. The extract gives the picture — dark house, unlovely street — and names the Victorian climate: grief that must walk a modern city. The guilty creeping is the body still keeping an appointment the dead cannot keep. Beside lyric 54’s willed trust, lyric 7 has no theodicy yet, only absence and drizzle. Beside “Dover Beach,” the street is private; Arnold’s armies are public. The set page is this lyric only, not the whole of In Memoriam (131 numbered lyrics plus prologue and epilogue). The bald street is urban weather, not a Pre-Raphaelite leaf.
In Memoriam A.H.H.
“He is not here; but far away / The noise of life begins again।”
6. Explain the following with reference to the context: “The Sea of Faith / Was once, too, at the full, and round earth’s shore / Lay like the folds of a bright girdle furled.”8 marks · about 200 words
Reference. These lines sit in Matthew Arnold’s “Dover Beach,” published in New Poems (1867), the set lyric of Unit 2 and the paper’s post-Origin spiritual-crisis poem. The lyric is irregular in line-length, rhymed in patches, not sprung. A speaker at a window on the Dover strait addresses a beloved. Arnold wrote as a schools inspector and as the critic of “culture” against machinery.
Context. The poem opens in calm: the sea is calm tonight; the moon lies fair; the night-air is sweet. Then the grating roar of pebbles which the waves draw back and fling — an eternal note of sadness. Sophocles heard the same ebb on the Aegean as human misery. Arnold hears the withdrawal of Faith. After the girdle image, “now I only hear / Its melancholy, long, withdrawing roar.” The world that seemed a land of dreams has neither joy, nor love, nor light, nor certitude, nor peace, nor help for pain. Last picture: a darkling plain, confused alarms of struggle and flight, ignorant armies that clash by night. The one human stay is “Ah, love, let us be true / To one another!”
Explanation. The extract is the poem’s theological hinge. The Sea of Faith once lay round the earth like a bright girdle: a full, holding, beautiful enclosure. Now the girdle is gone; only the roar of withdrawal remains. Houghton’s Victorian doubt after science and the machine age is here in one figure. The Darwin date stays honest: 1867 is after 1859; Tennyson’s lyric 54 (1850) still trusts a spring. Yeats’s later centre that cannot hold is a harsher night still. The form is lyric address to a beloved, not a Duke’s bargain with an envoy. Moonlight is the opening weather, not a nature ode’s subject.
कमरबंद-चित्र के बाद, “now I only hear / Its melancholy, long, withdrawing roar।” एक मानवीय थाम “Ah, love, let us be true / To one another!”
7. Explain the following with reference to the context: “It ís the blight man was born for, / It is Margaret you mourn for.”8 marks · about 200 words
Reference. These are the last two lines of Gerard Manley Hopkins’s “Spring and Fall,” written 1880, the set page for inscape, instress and sprung rhythm. A knowing adult speaks to a child, Margaret, who grieves over Goldengrove unleaving. The address is close to the poet; it is not Browning’s criminal mask. Hopkins marks the stress on is in the first of these lines.
Context. The lyric opens “Márgarét, áre you gríeving / Over Goldengrove unleaving?” Leaves are like the things of man; she cares with fresh thoughts. As the heart grows older it will come to such sights colder; worlds of wanwood may lie leafmeal, and she will not spare a sigh — and yet she will weep and know why. “Sorrow’s springs are the same.” Neither mouth nor mind has expressed what heart heard and ghost guessed. Then the last couplet: the blight man was born for; Margaret you mourn for. You, not she: the speaker tells the child that the grief is already hers.
Explanation. Inscape: the grove’s distinctive pattern is mortality in falling gold. Instress: that pattern strikes the child before she has the word death. Sprung rhythm: counted stresses, packed slack, the name Márgarét itself sprung; the forced lift on ís. The blight is original mortality, not a Darwin lesson: Hopkins still reads a meaningful thisness, not blind selection. Arnold’s irregular beach-lines are not sprung; they do not use Hopkins’s foot-law. Beside Tennyson 54, the child weeps without theodicy.
गीति “Márgarét, áre you gríeving / Over Goldengrove unleaving?” “Sorrow’s springs are the same।”
8. Write a critical note on Browning’s “My Last Duchess.”8 marks · about 200 words
Browning printed the poem in Dramatic Lyrics (1842). Fifty-six lines of iambic pentameter couplets, so enjambed that the rhyme is half-hidden — talk, not snap. This is Unit 1’s dramatic monologue: one speaker who is not the poet; a silent auditor (the Count’s envoy); a revealing moment; a character who gives himself away. The Duke of Ferrara shows a portrait by Frà Pandolf. The duchess looks as if she were alive. A spot of joy; a heart too soon made glad; she ranked the Duke’s nine-hundred-years-old name with a sunset, a bough of cherries, a white mule. He would not stoop to explain. “I gave commands; / Then all smiles stopped together.” He now treats of the next marriage and of the dowry, as if still talking of art.
Irony is the whole method. We hear courtesy, taste, connoisseurship; we infer murder and collection. Stoop is the Duke’s keyword: he would not stoop to instruct her; he will not stoop now. The envoy’s silence is the point — the next bride’s family is being shown the rule. Last gesture: Neptune taming a sea-horse, bronze by Claus of Innsbruck — another owned rarity, like the painted wife. The curtain he mentioned at the start is power: he controls who looks.
The neighbours keep the form exact. Tennyson’s mariners speak as “we” after a narrator lands them; there is no silent envoy. In Memoriam 7 and 54 are the poet’s own grief. Arnold addresses a beloved. Hopkins speaks to a child. Yeats has a vision, not a room. Frà Pandolf is an Italian painter inside the dramatic poem, not a Pre-Raphaelite brother.
“I gave commands; / Then all smiles stopped together।”
9. Write a note on the choric song of Tennyson’s “The Lotos-Eaters.”8 marks · about 200 words
The second movement is headed CHORIC SONG: eight numbered sections of irregular lyric, not Spenserian stanza. The mariners speak together after the narrator has landed them in the land of always-afternoon. Music falls softer than blown-rose petals; the stream is like a downward smoke; the lotos blooms below a barren peak. The question is Victorian even inside Homer: why are we weighed with heaviness while all things else have rest? Death is the end of life — why should we toil? Memory of wedded lives is dear, yet the labour of the oar is dearer to refuse.
They swear an oath, with an equal mind, in the hollow Lotos-land to live and lie reclined on the hills like gods together, careless of mankind. They will smile on men as men smile on the motes in a sunbeam — without care. The last cadence: slumber is sweeter than toil; the shore than mid-ocean labour; “O rest ye, brother mariners, we will not wander more.” Unit 1’s utilitarianism is the collision: a gospel of useful work, and a lyric that blesses stopping. Houghton’s earnest labour is exactly what they put down. The poem is not a treatise against Mill; it is the imaginative refusal of that gospel.
The form is a chorus, not a dramatic monologue: there is no silent envoy. The heavy fruit is Homeric weather, not a Pre-Raphaelite canvas. Odysseus himself is almost erased after the first “Courage!” Beside lyric 7’s urban grief and lyric 54’s trust, this is the wish to cease. Beside Arnold, the mariners have found a shore; Dover’s speaker has only love on a darkling plain. Tennyson’s title keeps Lotos.
अंतिम लय: निद्रा श्रम से मीठी; तट मध्य-सागर के श्रम से; “O rest ye, brother mariners, we will not wander more।”
10. Explain the following with reference to the context: “Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold; / Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world.”8 marks · about 200 words
Reference. These lines sit in the first verse-paragraph of W. B. Yeats’s “The Second Coming,” written in 1919 after the First World War and during the Irish troubles, printed 1920. The lyric is prescribed as the last poet of Unit 2 on this nineteenth-century paper. It is not Victorian reassurance. Two verse paragraphs, largely loose pentameter.
Context. The lyric opens “Turning and turning in the widening gyre / The falcon cannot hear the falconer.” A gyre is Yeats’s image of history as a widening spiral. Civilisation has flown beyond the centre that once steered it. After the extract: the blood-dimmed tide is loosed; the ceremony of innocence is drowned; the best lack all conviction; the worst are full of passionate intensity. The second movement turns from that present break to a vision drawn from Spiritus Mundi — the store of images in the world’s soul. He sees a desert shape: lion body, head of a man, slow thighs, indignant desert birds. Twenty centuries of stony sleep (the Christian age after Bethlehem) were vexed to nightmare. The closing question: what rough beast, its hour come round at last, slouches towards Bethlehem to be born?
Explanation. The two lines name the poem’s political-spiritual hinge: not only armies in confusion (Arnold’s darkling plain) but the failure of the centre itself. “Mere anarchy” is Yeats’s word for a world whose steering-point has gone. The “Second Coming” is not a gentle Christ; it is a rough beast. Beside Tennyson 54 there is no infant crying for light — there is a beast being born. The date is 1919, not 1837–1901. The form is a vision, not a dramatic monologue: no silent auditor in a room. The four names of the vision are gyre, falcon, Spiritus Mundi, and the beast.
गीति “Turning and turning in the widening gyre / The falcon cannot hear the falconer” से खुलती है।
11. Discuss the poetry prescribed in Unit 2 — Tennyson, Hopkins, Arnold, Browning, Yeats — as this paper’s map of Victorian voice and its late hinge.20 marks · about 500 words
Unit 2 sets five poets, each with a distinct form. Tennyson, Hopkins, Arnold and Browning belong to the Victorian climate; Yeats’s lyric is 1919, prescribed here as a late hinge, not as a Victorian exhibit. Dramatic monologue, inscape, instress, sprung rhythm and aestheticism are Unit 1 terms that these pages illustrate. The five voices are not one “Victorian style.”
Tennyson, Poet Laureate from 1850, gives three set pages. “The Lotos-Eaters” (1832/42) opens in Spenserian stanzas: always-afternoon, veils of thinnest lawn (fine cloth, not grass), a weary oar; then a choric song of eight sections whose oath is to lie reclined like gods, careless of mankind. Utilitarianism collides here: useful labour against blessed rest. The form is a chorus after a narrator lands them; there is no silent envoy. In Memoriam lyric 7 is three ABBA tetrameter quatrains at Hallam’s dark house in the long unlovely street — urban grief, bald (bare, treeless) drizzle, a hand that cannot be clasped. Lyric 54 is five quatrains of willed theodicy: “Oh yet we trust that somehow good / Will be the final goal of ill,” then “Behold, we know not anything,” then the infant crying in the night. The lyrics are 1850, nine years before Origin of Species. After 1859 the age reread “taints of blood”; the lyric does not quote Darwin. The set pages are these lyrics only, not the whole elegy of 131 numbered lyrics.
Browning’s “My Last Duchess” (1842) is the set dramatic monologue: one speaker who is not the poet, one silent envoy of a Count, a revealing moment, a character who gives himself away. Stoop is the keyword; then “I gave commands; / Then all smiles stopped together”; last owned rarity, Neptune taming a sea-horse. We hear connoisseurship; we infer murder and collection. Arnold’s “Dover Beach” (1867) is irregular lyric address to a beloved, not sprung rhythm: the Sea of Faith once a bright girdle; now a melancholy, long, withdrawing roar; love the last stay; ignorant armies on a darkling plain. It is the set post-Origin spiritual lyric. Hopkins’s “Spring and Fall” (1880) owns inscape (the grove’s thisness as mortality), instress (the blow on the child before the word death), and sprung rhythm (counted stresses, packed slack, Márgarét, the lift on ís). Last couplet: it is Margaret you mourn for. Arnold’s beach-lines use a different foot-law; Hopkins still reads a meaningful thisness, not blind selection.
Yeats’s “The Second Coming” is the paper’s late hinge. Two verse paragraphs, largely loose pentameter. A gyre is a widening spiral of history; the falcon cannot hear the falconer; things fall apart; the centre cannot hold; mere anarchy is loosed. Spiritus Mundi is the world’s store of images: lion body, head of a man, a rough beast slouching toward Bethlehem — not a gentle Christ. Beside Arnold, the armies are no longer only ignorant; the centre itself fails. Beside Tennyson 54, there is no infant crying for light — there is a beast being born. It is a vision, not a monologue, not Victorian reassurance. The date 1919 is after the First World War and during the Irish troubles; it is not 1837–1901.
The map of the unit is therefore six pages and six forms: choric rest (Lotos: Spenserian plus chorus); street-grief and willed trust (In Memoriam 7 and 54: ABBA elegy); ironic power (Duchess: enjambed pentameter couplets); faith withdrawing (Dover: irregular lyric); sacramental mortality (Spring and Fall: sprung lyric); apocalypse after empire’s war (Second Coming: visionary lyric). Victorian poetry as a heading centres Tennyson, Browning, Arnold and Hopkins; poetry on this paper includes all five, with Yeats named as 1919. Each page illustrates a Unit 1 term where it fits: utilitarianism against lotos-rest; dramatic monologue in the Duke’s room; Darwin-date honesty on lyric 54 and Dover; inscape, instress and sprung rhythm on Margaret’s grove; aestheticism is Wilde’s novel, not these lyrics.
गीत 54 चाहे गए ईश्वर-न्याय की पाँच चतुष्पदी हैं: “Oh yet we trust…,” फिर “Behold, we know not anything,” फिर रात में रोता शिशु।
Stoop कीवर्ड है; फिर “I gave commands; / Then all smiles stopped together”; अंतिम दुर्लभ संपत्ति, नेपचून घोड़े को वश में करता।

1. What happens to the withered rose in “Dr. Heidegger’s Experiment”?2 marks
Dr Heidegger shows a rose fifty-five years old, his dead fiancée’s. He drops it in the cut-glass vase of water from the Fountain of Youth; it blooms. The four aged friends drink; they grow young, vain, quarrel, smash the vase. The rose withers again. They wither. The doctor has not drunk.
The rose is the tale’s one device: it blooms and withers with the drinkers in a single sitting. A second youth would not teach them; as soon as they are old they plan a pilgrimage to Florida.
2. Why, according to Stevenson, should a walking tour be gone upon alone?2 marks
Stevenson’s “On Walking Tours” (Virginibus Puerisque, 1881) is a personal essay in the line of Hazlitt, whom he quotes. A walking tour is not mainly a better way to see landscape: the railway sees landscape vividly enough. The walker goes for “certain jolly humours” — morning hope, evening peace. To be properly enjoyed, the tour should be gone upon alone. Company turns it into a picnic. Freedom is of the essence: your own pace, your own stops.
The overwalker who stupefies himself with miles misses the happiness. Night after dinner is the best hour. Stevenson names Hazlitt’s On Going a Journey as his master.
3. What is Huxley’s first sentence in “Selected Snobberies”? Name two types he sorts.2 marks
All men are snobs about something. He then sorts the fashions: disease-snobbery (Keats-like fading; fashionable maladies and spas); family-snobbery in decline; culture-snobbery wrestling with a snobbery of ignorance; booze-snobbery born of American Prohibition; modernity-snobbery as the age’s economic engine — “We are all modernity-snobs now”; art-snobbery, platonic and unplatonic.
He votes a middle: approve snobberies that provoke better activities (culture-snobs make philistines pay a tribute to mind); detest the rest. The syllabus names Huxley’s On the Margin; this essay is the snobbery-classification, also collected in Music at Night.
पाठ्यक्रम हक्सले की On the Margin नाम करता है; यह निबंध स्नोबरी-वर्गीकरण है, Music at Night में भी।
4. Write a note on Hawthorne’s “Dr. Heidegger’s Experiment” as the set short story.8 marks · about 200 words
Hawthorne’s tale (among the Twice-Told Tales) is American nineteenth-century short fiction, not a British Victorian novel. One sitting, one room, one test. Dr Heidegger, elderly, invites four aged friends: Mr Medbourne, ruined in speculation; Colonel Killigrew, worn by pleasure; Mr Gascoigne, a ruined politician; and Widow Wycherly, once a beauty, now a scandal. The study holds dust, cobwebs, a skeleton in the closet, a bust of Hippocrates, a black folio of magic. On the table a cut-glass vase of water said to be from the Fountain of Youth in Florida.
He shows a withered rose, fifty-five years old, his dead fiancée’s. He drops it in the vase; it blooms. The four laugh, then drink. Colour returns; wrinkles go; they are young again and immediately vain. The Widow’s mirror, the men’s rivalry, the same flirtation and quarrel they had in youth — all return in minutes. They dance, lunge, knock the table; the vase smashes; the precious water is a puddle on the floor. The rose withers. They wither. Dr Heidegger has not drunk. He has learned enough from the evening. The four have learned nothing they will keep. As soon as they are old again they plan a pilgrimage to Florida to drink from the Fountain itself.
That is why the tale is a short story of revelation, not a sermon pasted on. Abrams’s tests: brief, concentrated, one action, a close that turns the knife. Wilde’s portrait hides vice while the face stays young; Hawthorne’s friends show vice as soon as they are young, in public, in one room. Stevenson’s walking tour is an essay. Chekhov’s The Seagull is a play. The exhibit of “short story” on this paper is this one sitting: one experiment, one smashed vase, one refusal to learn. The Scarlet Letter is another Hawthorne book; this tale is the set page.
5. Write a note on Stevenson’s “On Walking Tours.”8 marks · about 200 words
Stevenson’s essay (1876; collected in Virginibus Puerisque, 1881) is a personal essay in the line of Hazlitt, whom he quotes. A walking tour is not mainly a better way to see landscape: the railway sees landscape vividly enough. The walker goes for “certain jolly humours” — morning hope, evening peace. Pleasure must lead on to pleasure. The overwalker who stupefies himself with miles comes to the inn with frost on his wits and misses the happiness. To be properly enjoyed, the tour should be gone upon alone. Company turns it into a picnic. Freedom is of the essence: your own pace, your own stops, thoughts taking colour from what you see. Hazlitt: walking and talking at once is no wit; in the country one wishes to vegetate like the country.
The day has a curve: exhilaration of the start; then open-air drunkenness, a cheerful dream of muscle and road; bivouac at a milestone, pipe, no clock — “Not to keep hours for a lifetime is, I was going to say, to live for ever.” Night after dinner is the best hour: the pipe, the book that sounds as if you had written it, talk at the inn door, or “happy thinking” by the fire when weather imprisons you. Modern haste, clocks, projects, forget that the point is to live. Next morning the parish of the infinite changes.
The essay’s three claims are therefore: the tour should be gone upon alone; the overwalker misses the happiness; night after dinner is the best hour. It is a personal essay, not a short story and not Huxley’s classification of snobs. Beside Belloc, both distrust modern haste; Stevenson’s walker empties the mind by stride, Belloc by refusing false knowledge. Beside Chesterton, another essay against hurry — here on a road, there in a life. Stevenson names Hazlitt’s On Going a Journey as his master; the genre is that line of the personal essay, a day’s curve rather than a health sermon.
6. Write a note on Huxley’s “Selected Snobberies.”8 marks · about 200 words
Huxley’s essay opens with a hard sentence: all men are snobs about something. He then sorts the fashions. Disease-snobbery: the adolescent who thinks it romantic to fade like Keats, and the richer sort who collect fashionable maladies and spas. Family-snobbery is in decline. Culture-snobbery still strong, wrestling with a snobbery of ignorance. Booze-snobbery, born of American Prohibition, makes drunkenness socially creditable. Modernity-snobbery is the age’s economic engine: machines overproduce, so advertising teaches us to throw away and buy again — “We are all modernity-snobs now.” Art-snobbery splits: platonic (an “interest” in art) and unplatonic (buying art as culture-symbol and wealth-symbol). Old Masters are safer than living painters; a few modernity-art-snobs, plus eccentrics who like art for itself, keep artists alive.
The humanistic “point” of snobbery is that it stimulates activity: a society with plenty of snobberies is like a dog with fleas — not comatose. If activity is good, snobberies are good; a Buddhist would condemn them all. Huxley votes a middle: approve those snobberies that provoke better activities (the intellectual will even stomach culture-snobs because they make philistines pay a tribute to mind); detest the rest. Each hierarchy culminates in its own Pope.
The essay is therefore witty classification plus this moral of the middle: some snobberies stir better work; the rest are detestable. It is sociology of prestige, not Wilde’s Preface of art for art. Huxley maps a snobbery of ignorance as one type; Belloc’s “In Praise of Ignorance” defends a humble not-knowing that is the opposite of that low-brow pose. The syllabus names Huxley’s On the Margin (1923) among readings; this set essay is the snobbery-classification, also collected in Music at Night. The types and the middle vote are the argument; “snobs are bad” is only the first sentence inverted.
पाठ्यक्रम हक्सले की On the Margin (1923) नाम करता है; निर्धारित निबंध स्नोबरी-वर्गीकरण है, Music at Night में भी।
7. Write a note on Belloc’s “In Praise of Ignorance” and Chesterton’s “On the Pleasures of No Longer Being Very Young.”8 marks · about 200 words
Belloc opens with a joke of dates: Erasmus wrote In Praise of Folly; four hundred years later he will write in praise of Ignorance. The target is not illiteracy. It is the modern pride of knowing a little of everything, and the specialist who knows more and more about less and less, then speaks as if that sliver were the world. Print and fashionable theory can be a tyranny: people repeat what they have not tested. There is a health in saying “I do not know,” in keeping wonder, common sense, and the knowledge of ordinary things — a craft, a road, a parish — against the man stuffed with newspaper. Some ignorance is even a protection: not every vice and not every pretension needs to be studied before a conscience can judge. It is a paradox essay: information is not wisdom, and remaining untaught is not the counsel.
Chesterton’s essay (All Is Grist) is a defence of maturity against the cult of youth. The young have energy and innocence, but they have little past with which to compare a new thing: they cannot taste “new” until they have an “old.” They also have little patience for a proverb they have not yet found true. The person who is no longer very young has the pleasure of recognition: this has happened before; the proverb fits; the joke is on the latest fashion. Proverbs become usable because experience has paid for them. Happiness, here, is not a defeat called old age; it is being better equipped. Age is not automatically wisdom (a fool can grow old), but perspective, humour, and tested sayings are pleasures the very young cannot yet have.
Beside Huxley: Huxley maps a snobbery of ignorance and a modernity-snob; Belloc defends humble not-knowing; Chesterton refuses to treat newness as a duty. Beside Stevenson, both later essays also distrust haste — not only on a road, but in a life and in a mind stuffed with print. Neither is a short story. The pair is paradox, not the slogan “old is good” or “study is bad”: Erasmus’s hook; the specialist’s sliver treated as the world; the health of “I do not know”; youth’s lack of comparison; the proverb as earned wisdom.
8. Discuss the prose of Unit 3 — Hawthorne’s short story and the four essays — as this paper maps story against essay.20 marks · about 500 words
The official prose is one short story and four essays. Nathaniel Hawthorne, “Dr. Heidegger’s Experiment.” Robert Louis Stevenson, “On Walking Tours” (Virginibus Puerisque, 1881). Aldous Huxley, “Selected Snobberies.” Hilaire Belloc, “In Praise of Ignorance.” G. K. Chesterton, “On the Pleasures of No Longer Being Very Young” (All Is Grist). Hawthorne is the short story; the rest are essays, not novels and not Chekhov’s play. The five pages are not all “stories” and not all “Victorian essays.” Hawthorne is American nineteenth-century fiction. Huxley, Belloc and Chesterton sit after Victoria; they belong on this nineteenth-century paper by the syllabus names story and essay, not by the dates 1837–1901.
Hawthorne’s tale is one sitting, one room, one test. Four aged friends drink Fountain-water: Mr Medbourne, ruined in speculation; Colonel Killigrew, worn by pleasure; Mr Gascoigne, a ruined politician; Widow Wycherly, once a beauty. A fifty-five-year rose, the doctor’s dead fiancée’s, blooms and withers with them; they smash the vase; they would drink again. Short-story method: limited cast, one device, a close that turns the knife. Wilde’s portrait hides vice while the face stays young; these four show vice as soon as they are young. The set page is this tale, not The Scarlet Letter. Stevenson’s walker goes not for landscape the railway cannot see, but for jolly humours: alone, not the overwalker, the evening’s repletion, Hazlitt as master, no clock, “happy thinking.” It is a personal essay of a day’s curve, not a plotted event.
Huxley classifies: all men are snobs about something — disease, family, culture, booze, modernity, art (platonic and unplatonic). Modernity-snobbery is the economic engine of throw-away and buy-again. He votes a middle: approve snobberies that provoke better activities; philistines paying tribute to mind; detest the rest. A society with snobberies is a dog with fleas, not comatose. The syllabus names On the Margin; this essay is the snobbery-classification, also in Music at Night. It is sociology of prestige, not Wilde’s art-for-art Preface.
Belloc’s paradox: Erasmus praised Folly; he praises Ignorance — not stupidity, not illiteracy, but the specialist’s sliver treated as the world, and the health of “I do not know.” Chesterton defends maturity against the cult of youth: the young cannot taste “new” without an “old”; the proverb becomes usable when experience has paid; pleasure is perspective, not decline. Beside Huxley’s modernity-snob, Chesterton refuses newness as a duty. Beside Stevenson, all three later essays distrust haste — stride, print, fashion. Chekhov’s The Seagull is drama; Wilde’s Dorian Gray is the novel: neither belongs under this unit’s two names.
The map of the unit is therefore five machines. Story: Hawthorne’s smashed vase and the refusal to learn. Essay of the body and the day: Stevenson. Essay of types: Huxley. Essays of paradox: Belloc’s Erasmus hook and Chesterton’s earned proverb. “Short story” on this paper has one honest exhibit, the Fountain evening. “The essay on this paper” may be one of the four, or the four together as a climate against snobbery, haste, and the cult of youth. Rose, road, snob-list, Erasmus, proverb: those five pages are the long answer.
Heidegger’s Experiment।” स्टीवेन्सन, “On Walking Tours” (Virginibus Puerisque, 1881)। हक्सले, “Selected Snobberies।” बेलोक, “In Praise of Ignorance।” चेस्टर्टन, “On the Pleasures of No Longer Being Very Young” (All Is Grist)।
पाठ्यक्रम On the Margin नाम करता है; यह निबंध स्नोबरी-वर्गीकरण है, Music at Night में भी।
Unit 4 · Drama and novel
1. What does Treplev lay at Nina’s feet in Act II of The Seagull?2 marks
A seagull he has shot. It is a piece of his own ruined theatre after Arkadina mocked his outdoor play. Trigorin notes a subject: a girl lives by a lake; a man comes; he destroys her as that bird was destroyed, for want of something to do. Nina hears fame, not the warning.
The bird is wasted life made into a story, offered as a love-token that is really a wound — the emblem before it is the play’s title.
2. What does Dorian wish when he sees Basil’s finished portrait?2 marks
He wishes that the picture would age and that he would stay as he is. The wish takes. From here the plot is a double: the face in the world, the face in the attic. Lord Henry has already talked youth, sensation, the new Hedonism. The Preface has already said all art is quite useless (quite = completely).
The novel then tests the doctrine: the portrait keeps the stain the beautiful face refuses.
3. Explain Wilde’s sentence “All art is quite useless.”2 marks
It is the last sentence of the Preface to The Picture of Dorian Gray, Unit 1’s aestheticism in an exam phrase. Quite here means completely, not “fairly.” Art exists for beauty, not for a moral or a social use. There is no moral or immoral book, only well written or badly written.
The plot then refuses to stay useless: the portrait keeps moral accounts the beautiful face will not. Huxley’s snobberies are sociology of prestige; Hopkins’s inscape is sacramental thisness: neither is this sentence.
यह The Picture of Dorian Gray
4. Write a note on the seagull as symbol, and on Nina’s last visit.8 marks · about 200 words
Chekhov’s The Seagull (1896), in Senelick’s Norton translation, is a four-act play, not a short story. Act I: Treplev stages an outdoor play on Sorin’s estate; Nina as the World Soul; Arkadina mocks the form; Treplev stops the play. He loves Nina; Nina is drawn to Trigorin. Masha, in black, loves Treplev and will marry Medvedenko out of despair. Dorn almost alone takes the young play seriously. Already the pattern: art against career, mother against son, everyone loving the wrong person. It is Chekhov’s comedy that hurts, not a well-made plot of villains.
Act II: Treplev lays a shot seagull at Nina’s feet. Trigorin notes a subject: a girl by a lake; a man destroys her as that bird was destroyed, for want of something to do. Nina hears fame. Act III: Treplev’s failed suicide, bandage, quarrel; Arkadina keeps Trigorin; Nina will follow him to Moscow. Act IV, two years later: Nina has been a poor actress, has had Trigorin’s child, the child is dead, Trigorin has gone back to Arkadina. She comes in the night, wet, calls herself a seagull, then an actress — “I am a seagull… No, that’s not it… I am an actress” — recites the old World Soul speech, and leaves. Treplev tears up his manuscripts. A shot offstage. Dorn closes the door so that Arkadina will not be told at once.
The stuffed bird on the shelf is Shamraev’s doing: the estate manager had it mounted because Trigorin once asked; Trigorin no longer remembers. That is the symbol: not a riddle to decode once, but a wasted thing kept in the room. Nina has failed and still chooses the work. Treplev has talent and no faith in a form; he cannot live. The play is Chekhov’s comedy that hurts, not a lecture on Hamlet and not a Victorian comedy of manners. The lake, the failed play, the dead bird, the notebook, and the muffled shot are the machine.
No, that’s not it…
5. Write a note on Sibyl Vane and the first change in the portrait.8 marks · about 200 words
Dorian falls in love with Sibyl Vane, a poor actress who plays Shakespeare in a mean theatre. He loves her as Juliet, as Rosalind — as art. When she loves him, her acting dies: the painted heroines are nothing beside a real person. He rejects her in the name of ruined art. That night the portrait changes: a touch of cruelty in the mouth. Sibyl kills herself. Lord Henry converts the suicide into a romance; Basil wants repentance; Dorian locks the picture away and chooses Henry’s reading of the event. The yellow book (a poisonous French novel Henry sends) becomes the handbook of his later style.
The irony of aestheticism is already visible. He wanted a girl who was a work of art; when she became a woman who loved, he called that a bad performance. The portrait, not the Preface, now keeps the moral. Hawthorne’s friends showed their vice in the room; Dorian hides his in the attic and walks beautiful. Sibyl is the first corpse of the doctrine. James Vane, her brother, will hunt Dorian later and die by accident at a shooting party.
“All art is quite useless” meant completely useless; the plot then refuses to stay useless. The first stain is this night: the theatre, the ruined performance, the cruel mouth, the suicide, Henry’s conversion of grief into style. That is the first room of the cost Unit 1 named. The wish and the Preface stand before Sibyl; Basil’s murder stands after.
6. Discuss Chekhov’s The Seagull as a four-act play of wrong loves and wasted art.20 marks · about 500 words
Anton Chekhov’s The Seagull (1896) is a play of four acts, not a short story. Chekhov is drama; Wilde is the late-Victorian aesthetic novel. The play is 1890s Russian ensemble, on this paper’s nineteenth-century list by date and by the syllabus names drama and novel. It is Chekhov’s comedy that hurts, not a Victorian comedy of manners and not another Chekhov play imported in. Treplev talks restlessly of old theatre; the play is not a lecture on Hamlet.
The estate is Sorin’s, by a lake. Konstantin Treplev, young writer, stages an outdoor play: Nina Zarechnaya as the World Soul, a speech of lonely spirits after all life has gone. His mother, Irina Arkadina, a famous actress, mocks the form. Treplev stops the play. He loves Nina; Nina is drawn to Boris Trigorin, the successful novelist who is Arkadina’s lover. Masha, in black, loves Treplev and will marry the schoolmaster Medvedenko out of despair. Dorn, the doctor, is almost the only one who takes the young play seriously. Polina is Shamraev’s wife; Shamraev manages the estate. Already the pattern: art against career, mother against son, everyone loving the wrong person. It is not a well-made plot of villains.
Act II: croquet weather, idle talk, Nina lingering near Trigorin. Treplev has shot a seagull and lays it at Nina’s feet — a piece of his own ruined theatre. Trigorin notes a subject: a girl lives by a lake; a man comes; he destroys her as that bird was destroyed, for want of something to do. Nina does not hear the warning as warning. She hears fame. The bird is wasted life, made into a story, offered as a love-token that is really a wound. Act III: packing, bandage, quarrel. Treplev has tried to shoot himself and failed. Arkadina binds his head, then they tear each other — her stinginess, his need, Trigorin between them. She keeps Trigorin by a scene of actress-passion. Nina finds Trigorin; they agree she will follow him to Moscow. The lake will lose her.
Act IV is two years later, autumn, Treplev’s study, the same house. He has some success in magazines and no peace. Masha is married and still unhappy. Nina has been a poor actress, has had Trigorin’s child, the child is dead, Trigorin has gone back to Arkadina. She comes in the night, wet, calls herself a seagull, then an actress — “I am a seagull… No, that’s not it… I am an actress” — recites the old World Soul speech, and leaves. That visit is the growth inside the wreck: she has failed and still chooses the work. Treplev has talent and no faith in a form; he cannot live. He tears up his manuscripts. A shot offstage. Dorn closes the door so that Arkadina will not be told at once. The play ends on that muffling, not on a tragic oration. Trigorin will go on fishing and writing. Arkadina will go on touring.
The stuffed bird on the shelf is Shamraev’s doing: he had it mounted because Trigorin once asked; Trigorin no longer remembers. That is Chekhov’s symbol: not a riddle to decode once, but a wasted thing kept in the room. The persons of the house: Sorin (the house stays); Arkadina (mocks the new play, keeps Trigorin); Treplev (failed form, last shot); Nina (seagull then actress, she leaves); Trigorin (notebook plot, forgets the bird); Masha and Medvedenko (wrong marriage); Dorn and Shamraev. The long answer walks four acts, the bird twice (shot, stuffed), Nina’s correction of the name, and the muffled close. Plot without the symbol is a catalogue; the symbol without the acts is a riddle. The play wants both.
No, that’s not it…
7. Discuss Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray as the paper’s novel of aestheticism and its cost.20 marks · about 500 words
Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray (1890 magazine; 1891 volume) is the one set novel on this paper. Unit 1 named aestheticism: art for beauty, not for a moral use; l’art pour l’art; Pater’s gem-like flame; the Preface’s exam sentences — no moral or immoral book, only well or badly written; all art is quite useless (quite = completely). Unit 4 walks the cost. “Art for art’s sake” is the doctrine; the wish, Sibyl, Basil, and the stabbed canvas are the plot that tests it. Chekhov’s shot is offstage and social; Wilde’s knife is in the attic and allegorical.
Basil Hallward paints Dorian in a London studio. Lord Henry Wotton talks youth, sensation, the new Hedonism. He is not the narrator and not Wilde in a simple way; he is the tempter whose epigrams Dorian lives. Dorian looks at the finished portrait and wishes that the picture would age and that he would stay as he is. The wish takes. From here the plot is a double: the face in the world, the face in the attic. Victorian earnestness (Houghton) would educate a young man through work and marriage. This novel educates him through a studio, a garden, and a poisonous book Lord Henry later sends. The Preface and the wish are the first room.
Dorian falls in love with Sibyl Vane, a poor actress who plays Shakespeare in a mean theatre. He loves her as Juliet, as Rosalind — as art. When she loves him, her acting dies. He rejects her in the name of ruined art. That night the portrait changes: a touch of cruelty in the mouth. Sibyl kills herself. Lord Henry converts the suicide into a romance; Basil wants repentance; Dorian locks the picture away and chooses Henry’s reading. The yellow book becomes the handbook of his later style. The irony of the doctrine is already visible: he wanted a girl who was a work of art; when she became a woman who loved, he called that a bad performance. The portrait, not the Preface, now keeps the moral. Hawthorne’s friends showed vice in the room; Dorian hides his in the attic and walks beautiful.
About eighteen years pass. Dorian does not age. Rumours of corruption gather; he is still received because the face is innocent. He shows Basil the portrait. Basil begs him to pray. Dorian murders Basil and has the chemist Alan Campbell destroy the body. James Vane, Sibyl’s brother, hunts him and dies by accident at a shooting party. The last night Dorian resolves to be good, tests the portrait, finds a look of cunning added to the rest, and stabs the painted canvas. The servants find an old, withered man they hardly know, and a portrait of their master as they had last seen him, exquisite. The double is reversed at the cost of a life.
So the novel both proclaims aestheticism and cannot quite escape a moral fable: the soul (or the picture) keeps accounts. That is why Unit 1 called it the exhibit and the cost. Pre-Raphaelitism still usually wants a sacred story in the frame; Wilde’s Preface drops that story and keeps the cult of the beautiful object; the attic then restores a hidden sermon. A question that quotes the Preface wants the uselessness of art glossed, then the plot that refuses to stay useless. Dickens is not this book; Darwin is not a character in it. Wish, Sibyl, Basil, knife: four beats of the long answer.
The Picture of Dorian Gray
Unit 5 · Voices from India
1. What does Rama ask in doha 5, and how does Sugriva answer in 5(1–7)?2 marks
After the fire-sealed friendship and Sita’s dropped cloth (context just before the numbered span), doha 5: Rama, ocean of grace, asks — Sugriva, why do you live in the forest? Chaupais 5(1–7), running toward doha 6, are Sugriva’s history: Bali and he were brothers; Mayavi hid in a cave; Sugriva sealed the cave, thinking Bali dead; ministers forced the crown on him; Bali returned, beat him, took his all and his wife. A curse keeps Bali from Rishyamuka, yet fear stays.
Doha 6: Rama will kill Bali with one arrow; even if Bali ran to Brahma or Rudra, his life would not be saved. The knot is political and personal: stolen wife, forced kingship, a vow of one shaft. Bali’s later speech is katha, not Browning’s dramatic monologue.
2. What, according to the set chaupais after doha 6, is a true friend?2 marks
Those who are not pained by a friend’s pain — to look at them is heavy sin. One’s own sorrow should be dust; a friend’s sorrow, Meru. A friend turns one from the wrong path, shows virtue, hides fault, gives and takes without suspicion, always does good according to his strength, and in calamity loves a hundredfold — that, say the scriptures, is a saint’s friend. Four thorns: a stupid servant, a miser king, a bad woman, a deceitful friend.
The syllabus span 6(1–15) also takes Dundubhi’s bones and the palms as a test of Rama’s strength, and the start of Sugriva’s vairagya. Bali’s death belongs to the later numbered span (doha 8), not to 6(1–15).
3. What is Vivekananda’s rank of help in “The Secret of Work”?2 marks
Chapter III of Karma Yoga (Complete Works Vol. I, Advaita Ashrama) ranks help by the reach of the need. Food for an hour is help; food for a year is more; that which removes want for ever is greatest. Spiritual knowledge alone destroys misery for good; intellectual gift is next; physical help is last and least as a cure, because hunger returns. Hospitals will not end misery until character changes. Ignorance is the mother of evil.
The Gita’s command is to work incessantly, unattached, so that action does not bind. Character is the sum of samskaras, marks a wave leaves on the lake of mind. The mongoose at the Pandavas’ sacrifice is the set parable of true giving.
4. Who is Prannath on this paper, and what are the eight set Kirantan titles?2 marks
Mahamati Prannath (1618–1694) was born at Jamnagar in Kathiawar (Gujarat) and taught later in Bundelkhand (Panna). Arora’s 1994 English, Kirantan: The Divine Symphony of Mahamati Prannath, is the set rendering. The eight headings, in set order: Know thyself; The World is a strange show; To the seekers of Truth; To the seekers of Limitless; O my Soul; I want to ask the learned; The world is a play of mind; The souls of the Limitless.
The beloved of “O my Soul” is the unform Limitless, not Kishkindha’s bow-bearing Rama. The eight titles are the set, not the whole of Kirantan.
Kirantan: The Divine Symphony of Mahamati Prannath, Know thyself; The World is a strange show; To the seekers of Truth; To the seekers of Limitless; O my Soul; I want to ask the learned; The world is a play of mind; The souls of the Limitless।
5. Write a note on Kishkindha 5(1–7) and 6(1–15): Sugriva’s tale and the true friend.8 marks · about 200 words
Gita Press Gorakhpur 2014 numbers the set span. Just before doha 5 (context, not the numbered 5(1–7)): fire-sealed friendship, Sita’s dropped cloth, Rama heavy with thought. Doha 5: Rama, ocean of grace, asks — Sugriva, why do you live in the forest? Chaupais 5(1–7), running toward doha 6, are Sugriva’s history. Bali and he were brothers. Mayavi hid in a cave; Sugriva sealed it, thinking Bali dead; ministers forced the crown on him; Bali returned, beat him, took his all and his wife.
The first fifteen chaupais after doha 6 are the set moral core. Sugriva then shows Dundubhi’s bones and the palms; Rama fells them without effort; faith that Bali can be killed is born. For a moment knowledge rises: wealth and family hinder Rama-bhakti; enemy and friend are maya. The syllabus cuts at chaupai 15, as that vairagya speech begins — not yet the walk to the duel.
A question on only 5–6 therefore stops before Bali’s death. The true-friend list, the four thorns, Dundubhi as a test of strength, and Sugriva’s first turning from kingship toward bhajan are the set. Form is Awadhi chaupai closed by a doha. On the Gita Press page, 5(1–7) means the seven chaupais after doha 5, not a random seven from the kand. This is Voices from India: Sugriva’s tale is katha, not a dramatic monologue. Earlier dohas (Hanuman’s recognition, the fire-witness) are context; later dohas (the chest-arrow, the hunter charge) belong to the next numbered span. Rama here is sagun: bow, vow, a friend’s grief.
6. Write a note on Kishkindha 7(1–4), 8(1–5) and 9(1–2): the arrow and the charge.8 marks · about 200 words
Lead-in (Tara’s warning and doha 7, needed to seat the set four): Tara tells Bali that the two with Sugriva are Rama and Lakshmana, sons of the Kosala king, able to beat even Death; Bali calls her timid. Doha 7: if they kill me I shall still have found a lord. Then the set 7(1–4): he goes, proud, counting Sugriva a blade of grass. They fight; Bali strikes; Sugriva flees; the fist is like thunder. Sugriva cries that this wretch is not his brother in any good sense — which is what he had told Rama. (The next un-set chaupais explain Rama’s delay: the brothers look alike.) The set four lines are the pride, the blow, the flight.
Doha 8: Rama draws and strikes Bali in the chest. 8(1–5): Bali falls, rises, sees the dark body, matted hair, red eyes, bow strung; he fixes his heart on the feet, counts the birth fulfilled because he has recognised the Lord — then his mouth is hard. “You took body for dharma, and killed me like a hunter.” The next breath of the charge (just after the fifth) names the knot: I was the enemy, Sugriva the dear one — what was my fault? Hunter, dharma, and the hidden arrow are the charge. 9(1–2) begins the answer of grace: Rama, hearing the tender pain inside the hard words, touches Bali’s head with his hand, and offers to make the body deathless if Bali will keep his life.
Bali’s full reply and the chhand of leaving the body fall after the syllabus cut. The set speech stops at the touch and the offer. “Rama killed Bali” is the event; hunter, dharma, the chest-arrow, and the hand on the head are the set. This is Voices from India: Bali speaks inside katha, not a Browning dramatic monologue. Earlier dohas (Hanuman’s recognition, the fire-witness) are context; later dohas (the full death-song, the rains, the search for Sita) are not this span. Gita Press numbering: 5(1–7) means the seven chaupais after doha 5, not a random seven from the kand.
7. Write a note on Prannath’s eight Kirantan titles (Arora, 1994).8 marks · about 200 words
Mahamati Prannath (1618–1694) was born at Jamnagar in Kathiawar (Gujarat) and taught in western India and later Bundelkhand (Panna). His verses were sung; Kirantan is that sung book. The larger corpus (Kulzam Swaroop) gathers Veda and Quran and other books toward one claim: the soul’s home is the Supreme, the Limitless, beyond even the usual heavens of the learned, and the religions are roads if they wake that soul. Arora’s 1994 English, Kirantan: The Divine Symphony of Mahamati Prannath, is the paper’s set rendering. The eight headings are the set, not the whole of Kirantan. Because the English wording is Arora’s, the titles and the doctrine belong in the answer rather than a rival translation.
The eight are a path, not eight stray hymns. Know thyself — the work is inward: who is the soul, whose is the body. The World is a strange show and The world is a play of mind — the bazaar, the court, the sects are a spectacle and a mental play, not the Limitless; bondage is imagination’s, not a stone wall. To the seekers of Truth and To the seekers of Limitless — two addresses to those who have already left display; truth is not a school-label; the Limitless is the goal named in Prannath’s paramdham teaching. O my Soul — the singer turns from crowd to the companion within. I want to ask the learned — pandit and priest are questioned: your reading has not ended the soul’s exile. The souls of the Limitless — the company of those who belong to that home.
“O my Soul” sounds like a bhakti pad, but the beloved is the unform Limitless, not Kishkindha’s bow-bearing Rama. Beside Tulsidas: Rama is sagun, with bow, vow, and a friend’s grief; Prannath’s Limitless is the end of shows. Beside Vivekananda: work without attachment is a yoga of action in the world; these titles stress waking from the show. The three Voices from India are therefore three machines, not one “bhakti.” Arora’s eight titles in order, and that contrast with sagun Rama, are the note.
Kirantan: The Divine Symphony of Mahamati Prannath,
The World is a strange show और The world is a play of mind — बाज़ार, दरबार, पंथ तमाशा और मन-क्रीड़ा हैं, असीम नहीं; बंधन कल्पना का है, पत्थर-दीवार का नहीं। To the seekers of Truth और I want to ask the learned — पंडित-पुरोहित से प्रश्न: तुम्हारे पाठ ने आत्मा का निर्वासन नहीं तोड़ा। The souls of the Limitless — उस घर वालों का संग।
8. Write a note on Vivekananda’s “The Secret of Work” (Karma Yoga, Chapter III).8 marks · about 200 words
Chapter III of Karma Yoga is the set prose, from the Advaita Ashrama Complete Works Volume I. Helping others physically is good, but the greatness of help follows the reach of the need. Food for an hour is help; food for a year is more; that which removes want for ever is greatest. Spiritual knowledge alone destroys misery for good; intellectual gift is next; physical help is last and least as a cure, because hunger returns. Hospitals and asylums will not end misery until character changes. Ignorance is the mother of evil. The Gita’s command is to work incessantly. Every work mixes good and evil; both bind the soul. The Gita’s solution: do not attach yourselves to the work, and it will not bind.
Samskara is the mark a wave leaves on the lake of mind, the chance of that wave returning. Character is the sum of such impressions. Bad words, thoughts, acts fill the mind with bad marks; good marks can force a man to good even against a passing wish. When the good tendency is established, the tortoise-head of the senses stays in the shell. Higher still is the desire for liberation: freedom from the golden chain as well as the iron. Bad tendencies are pulled out by good ones, as a thorn by a thorn; then both thorns are thrown away. Work, but let not action cut a deep mark on the soul. Work like a master, not a slave. Give, expect nothing. Work as worship if you hold a Personal God: fruits given to the Lord, as water does not wet the lotus leaf.
The mongoose at the Pandavas’ sacrifice is the set parable. Half its body is gold from rolling on a poor Brahmin household’s last flour, given to a starving guest until the family died. The rich royal sacrifice cannot turn the other half gold. Charity that advertises is not that death-point giving. To be an ideal householder is as hard as, or harder than, to be an ideal sannyasin. Never vaunt gifts; be grateful to the poor for the chance to practise. Beside Tulsidas: Rama’s work in Kishkindha is attached in love to Sita and to a friend, yet it is dharma, not slave-work. Beside Prannath: the show of the world is here the field of karma, not only a thing to wake from. The rank of help, non-attachment, and the mongoose are this chapter; the rest of Karma Yoga is not the set page.
9. Discuss the three Voices from India prescribed in Unit 5 — Tulsidas, Prannath, Vivekananda — as this paper separates them.20 marks · about 500 words
Unit 5 sets three voices, not one “bhakti” blur. Tulsidas, Ramcharitmanas, Kishkindha Kand, Gita Press Gorakhpur 2014: couplet 5 (chaupais 1–7), 6 (1–15), 7 (1–4), 8 (1–5), 9 (1–2). Mahamati Prannath: eight English titles from Raj Kumar Arora, Kirantan (1994) — Know thyself; The World is a strange show; To the seekers of Truth; To the seekers of Limitless; O my Soul; I want to ask the learned; The world is a play of mind; The souls of the Limitless. Swami Vivekananda, Karma Yoga, Chapter III “The Secret of Work,” Complete Works Vol. I. Arora’s English is the set rendering of Prannath: the teaching is paraphrased from those titles. Tulsidas is close reading of the named doha-span only. The three are three machines, not one heading “Indian spirituality.”
Kishkindha is the fourth stair of the Ramcharitmanas: Rama and Lakshmana, searching for Sita, meet Hanuman on Rishyamuka, then Sugriva. The syllabus does not set the whole kand. Just before doha 5: fire-sealed friendship, Sita’s dropped cloth, Rama heavy with thought. Doha 5 asks why Sugriva lives in the forest. 5(1–7) is Sugriva’s Bali-Mayavi tale; doha 6 vows one arrow. 6(1–15) is the moral core: a friend’s sorrow is Meru; the true-friend list; four thorns; Dundubhi as a test of strength; the start of Sugriva’s vairagya. 7(1–4) after Tara and doha 7: pride, blow, flight. Doha 8: the chest-arrow. 8(1–5): hunter charge; the next breath names enemy versus dear. 9(1–2): Rama’s hand on Bali’s head, the offer of a deathless body. The syllabus cut is the stop. Rama here is sagun: bow, vow, a monkey-king’s grief. Form is Awadhi chaupai closed by a doha. Bali speaks inside katha, not as a Browning Duke.
Prannath (1618–1694), Jamnagar then Bundelkhand, sings Kirantan; Kulzam Swaroop gathers Veda and Quran toward the Limitless, the soul’s home beyond the learned heavens. The eight titles are a path: know the self; the world as strange show and as play of mind; seekers of Truth then of the Limitless; O my Soul; ask the learned; souls of that home. Empty rite and sect-pride are the saint’s weather. “O my Soul” sounds like a pad; the beloved is the unform Limitless, not Kishkindha’s Rama. The set English is Arora’s eight titles.
Vivekananda’s chapter ranks help (spiritual knowledge, then intellect, then food that returns), commands incessant unattached work, and treats character as the sum of samskaras. Work like a master; give, expect nothing; the mongoose at the Pandavas’ sacrifice proves that advertised royal charity cannot match a poor household’s last flour. The ideal householder is as hard as the ideal sannyasin. Beside Tulsidas, Rama’s work is dharma attached in love, not slave-work. Beside Prannath, the world here is a field of karma, not only a show to wake from.
The map of the unit is therefore three pages. Tulsidas: sagun katha, friendship, true friend, hidden arrow, grace’s hand. Prannath: wake from show and mind-play toward the Limitless (Arora’s eight). Vivekananda: rank of help, non-attachment, character, mongoose. “Voices from India” names the three separately, with the set spans and titles; extra kand, extra hymns, and the rest of Karma Yoga lie outside those pages. Those three pages are the long answer.
महामति प्राणनाथ: अरोड़ा, Kirantan (1994) के आठ अंग्रेज़ी शीर्षक — Know thyself; The World is a strange show; To the seekers of Truth; To the seekers of Limitless; O my Soul; I want to ask the learned; The world is a play of mind; The souls of the Limitless। III “The Secret of Work,” Complete Works खंड I।
